The AVR-Laptop is a DIY mini-computer built around an ATmega2560-based Arduino-compatible board. Its small monochrome screen and only 8 KB of SRAM make ordinary laptop expectations unrealistic—but also make its multitasking interface, games, audio, and builder-reported video playback an unusually revealing experiment in constrained computing.
What is the AVR-Laptop?
Vladimir’s AVR-Laptop is an ongoing hardware and firmware project, not a conventional laptop replacement. Its 3D-printed enclosure measures 12 × 11 × 3.4 cm and contains a custom QWERTY keyboard, a 128 × 64 monochrome LCD, speakers, a VS1053 audio decoder, microSD storage, a real-time clock, and an 18650 battery. The controller is an Arduino-compatible Mega 2560 Pro Mini based on the ATmega2560. The project page documents the design; Hackster.io’s independent summary describes the same core idea.

The project owner says the goal is to explore what an AVR-based computer can do, rather than to choose the most capable platform for everyday computing. That distinction explains the design: the challenge is fitting useful interaction and several applications into a compact system with very little memory.
What can it do?
The owner reports a multitasking interface with Alt-Tab task switching and a shared UI engine. Its listed applications include a file manager, video and music players, a clock, a calculator, Sokoban, Snake, and Conway’s Game of Life. A text editor is described as under development. These are project-reported capabilities, not an independent evaluation of a finished product.

The shared interface supplies widgets, forms, dialogs, focus handling, and event dispatch. Individual tasks use that engine rather than managing one another directly. In practice, the project is closer to a purpose-built computer environment with small applications than to a desktop operating system.
Why is 8 KB of SRAM such a big constraint?
The ATmega2560 system has 8 KB of SRAM, as summarized in Hackster.io’s coverage; the Microchip ATmega2560 product page identifies the device. Vladimir says global variables and services already consume roughly half of the available RAM. That leaves little space for application data, display buffers, and operating-system task stacks.
A 128 × 64 monochrome image needs 1 bit per pixel: 128 × 64 ÷ 8 = 1,024 bytes, or 1 KB. The project uses a buffer of that size for the display, consuming one eighth of the chip’s stated SRAM before other working memory is considered. This simple calculation captures the central engineering trade-off: even a single full-screen image is significant on this machine.

Because RAM is scarce, the owner says task stacks had to be kept small and data structures lean. A larger display, more elaborate graphics, or additional concurrent work would compete for the same limited memory. This is why the project’s small, monochrome interface is not just a stylistic choice; it suits the constraints.
How does it draw graphics on a 128 × 64 screen?
The display is an ST7920-based 128 × 64 monochrome LCD. Vladimir chose parallel signaling to increase transfer speed and wrote a custom driver supporting pixel operations, drawing primitives, text, and XBM images. XBM is a simple monochrome bitmap format that maps naturally to a one-bit framebuffer.
Text rendering has an alignment complication: a glyph may begin at any horizontal pixel position, while the framebuffer stores pixels in groups of eight. When a glyph does not line up with a byte boundary, its bits must be shifted and split across neighboring bytes. That work is modest in absolute terms, but it matters on a small controller already sharing memory and time among display updates and application tasks.

In the project log, Vladimir reports that sending an XBM frame initially took about 40 ms and later about 32 ms after optimization. The builder found that much of the delay came from waiting for the display controller rather than from CPU computation. The reported improvements included moving byte transfer into a timer interrupt and sending only changed display rows through a dirty-line mechanism. These are the author’s measurements and implementation notes, not controlled benchmark results.
How can it play video?
AVR-Laptop does not decode a conventional compressed video stream. Vladimir describes a custom file format that combines monochrome XBM image frames with MP3 audio. A Python converter extracts frames, reduces them to 128 × 64 monochrome images, and prepares them for playback from microSD. The AVR loads each frame into the display buffer, while the VS1053 module handles audio decoding.
The controller must coordinate frame changes, display refresh, storage reads, and feeding audio data to the decoder. The builder reports playback at 24 frames per second or more with sound, and says temporal dithering can suggest shades of gray on the monochrome screen. Hackster.io repeats the frame-rate claim, but does not describe independent laboratory testing; treat the figure as a result reported by the project author.

The display timing log illustrates why raw processing speed is not the only issue. As Vladimir put it, “The difficulty wasn’t that the AVR couldn’t keep up, but that frames had to be swapped at the right moment.” In other words, the project’s video demonstration depends on coordinating a deliberately simple image-and-audio format with the display and decoder—not on general-purpose video decoding comparable to a modern computer.

The owner began with a simpler task menu and task interface. As the interface grew, applications duplicated UI elements, and blocking operations could prevent the shell from servicing display updates. A single-task design was no longer a good fit for the behavior the project wanted.
Vladimir switched to FreeRTOS and substantially rewrote the architecture. The shared UI engine gives applications common widgets and event handling, while separate tasks support the multitasking model. That change brought its own cost: every task needs stack space, and the ATmega2560’s small SRAM budget made stack sizing and compact data structures critical. FreeRTOS helped organize concurrent work; it did not remove the underlying memory constraint.

How is the keyboard scanned?
The owner describes a 64-key keyboard arranged physically in 11 × 6 positions and treated conceptually as an 8 × 8 matrix. Matrix scanning activates one column at a time and reads the rows, reducing the number of controller pins needed compared with wiring every key separately. Software debouncing accepts a key state only after several scans agree, helping avoid false presses from switch contact bounce.
In a later revision, the builder added a diode per key and a 4-to-16 decoder for selecting columns. The diodes improve simultaneous-key detection and the decoder reduces controller-pin use. This is one documented solution for this keyboard, not a required topology for every matrix keyboard; the appropriate circuit depends on the key layout and controller resources.

The project identifies component types, but it does not provide a complete bill of materials or establish universal compatibility among modules. Treat the following as a description of the design, not a ready-to-order kit list.

The owner says code, schematics, and documentation were being finalized for GitHub publication. The project page did not list downloadable files or instructions when checked, so do not assume a finished build guide or complete source repository is available.
Why use an AVR instead of an STM32 or Raspberry Pi?
The project’s stated purpose is to explore the limits of an AVR, not to win a platform comparison. A Raspberry Pi or a more powerful microcontroller would generally offer more processing and memory headroom, and could support a richer display and broader software. That is a qualitative platform distinction, not a measured head-to-head result: the cited coverage provides no controlled comparison among AVR-Laptop, STM32, and Raspberry Pi.
The AVR approach instead makes the resource budget part of the project. Choosing it means accepting substantial firmware and hardware work to produce a narrow set of functions, in exchange for learning how far an 8-bit system can be pushed. Anyone choosing a platform for a practical everyday computer should compare memory, graphics needs, power management, software breadth, and custom-build effort against their actual workload; AVR-Laptop is not presented as a conventional laptop alternative.
