Serve AVIF first, WebP second, and keep a JPEG or PNG fallback. The HTML <picture> element lets each browser select the best format it can decode, so you do not have to choose one codec for every visitor. AVIF normally delivers smaller files at comparable visual quality, while WebP has the safer compatibility profile and a simpler operational baseline.
The right decision depends on more than the file extension. Compare the two formats at the same dimensions and perceptual quality, then consider browser coverage, decode speed, transparency, animation, HDR or wide-colour requirements, and the effort of generating and maintaining fallbacks.

The practical answer: use content negotiation, not a single-format bet
For most public websites, the strongest deployment is an ordered set of alternatives:
Recommended Free Tools
- Offer AVIF to browsers that advertise support.
- Offer WebP to browsers that do not select AVIF but can decode WebP.
- Use the original JPEG or PNG as the final fallback.
A browser evaluates the <source> elements from top to bottom and chooses the first compatible type. Older or unusual clients can still receive the fallback image through the nested <img> element. This approach captures AVIF’s compression advantage without making unsupported clients a failure case.

If you must select one format for a very simple site, WebP is the lower-risk default because it is natively supported by Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge and Opera, as well as many image tools and libraries, according to Google’s WebP documentation. If reducing transfer bytes is the overriding objective and your visitor analytics show suitable AVIF coverage, put AVIF first. In a mixed audience, serving both is usually better than arguing for one universal winner.
What AVIF and WebP actually are
AVIF
AVIF is the AV1 Image File Format, carried in a HEIF container. It is open source and royalty free. The format supports lossy and lossless compression, animation, alpha transparency, high-dynamic-range (HDR) imagery and wide colour gamuts. Those capabilities make it useful for ordinary photographic images as well as demanding visual assets where colour volume or animation matters.
MDN records AVIF support beginning with Chrome 85, Edge 121, Opera 71, Firefox 93 and Safari 16.1. Those are browser-version compatibility facts, not a guarantee that every embedded browser, older device or non-browser image consumer can decode a file. Test the clients that matter to your audience.

Google describes WebP as a modern web-image format with lossy and lossless compression intended to produce smaller files and faster web performance. It supports animation and alpha transparency, and it is implemented natively in the major desktop and mobile browsers named above. WebP is also widely handled by image-processing tools and libraries, which can simplify CMS, build-pipeline and design-tool integration.
WebP does not provide the same documented HDR and wide-gamut feature set as AVIF, but those features are irrelevant for many logos, interface images, screenshots and standard photographs. Its value is a combination of useful compression, familiar tooling and broad deployment confidence.
AVIF vs. WebP at a glance
| Criterion | AVIF | WebP | What it means for your site |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical compression efficiency | Generally better compression than WebP at comparable visual quality, according to MDN. | Modern lossy and lossless compression with smaller files than older web formats, according to Google. | AVIF often reduces transfer bytes further, but measure your own images rather than assuming a fixed percentage. |
| Lossy and lossless modes | Supported | Supported | Both can be used for photographs, graphics and assets where exact pixel preservation matters. |
| Transparency | Alpha transparency supported | Alpha transparency supported | Either can replace many PNG assets when your toolchain preserves the alpha channel correctly. |
| Animation | Supported | Supported | Choose based on encoded size, decoder behaviour and the browsers you need to reach. |
| HDR and wide colour | Supported | Not identified as a corresponding feature in the supplied format description | AVIF is the natural candidate for HDR or wide-gamut delivery, provided the display and colour-management path is also tested. |
| Progressive rendering | Not supported; the complete file must be downloaded before display, according to MDN. | Progressive behaviour is not the same AVIF limitation | Test perceived loading on slower links and devices; a smaller AVIF file can still appear later if decoding waits for the full file. |
| Browser and tooling risk | Newer support envelope and potentially more decoder variation | Broad native browser support and mature tooling | Use a fallback chain if any visitor, crawler, app webview or image workflow may lack AVIF decoding. |
| Best strategic role | First choice when byte savings or advanced colour features justify testing | Broad-compatibility modern baseline | Serving both avoids forcing one trade-off on every visitor. |
Why AVIF often wins on file size—and where that win can be less useful
AVIF’s principal advantage is compression efficiency. At an equivalent rendered size and comparable perceptual quality, an AVIF file will often be smaller than its WebP counterpart. Fewer bytes can reduce transfer time, bandwidth use and the amount of data a mobile visitor must download.

Compression comparisons are meaningful only when the inputs are controlled. Export the same source image at the same pixel dimensions, then compare files at a quality level that produces similar visual results. A tiny file with visible ringing, banding or smeared texture is not a successful optimisation. Conversely, a visually indistinguishable AVIF that saves only a few bytes may not justify additional encoding time or operational complexity.
AVIF cannot progressively render. MDN states that the file must be fully downloaded before it can be displayed. That behaviour is especially relevant to large hero images: the transfer may be shorter than WebP’s, yet the image can remain invisible until the final bytes arrive and decoding completes. Measure both network timing and the moment the image becomes usable on representative phones, laptops and slower connections.
Encoding and decoding are also part of the cost. An automated image service may spend more CPU time producing AVIF variants, and an older device may take longer to decode them. The supplied evidence does not establish a universal speed ranking, so treat encode and decode time as test variables rather than promises. Keep WebP and the source fallback available while you collect real performance data.
Why WebP remains the safer compatibility baseline
WebP has a broad native support profile across current Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge and Opera releases. Google’s documentation also lists support in many tools and libraries, which matters when images pass through a CMS, thumbnail generator, design handoff or moderation pipeline. Fewer unsupported steps generally mean fewer broken thumbnails and fewer special cases in deployment.
That compatibility does not make WebP universally superior. AVIF can deliver smaller files and supports HDR and wide-gamut imagery. WebP is the sensible first format when a site values predictable behaviour across a broad or poorly known audience, when the publishing stack already handles WebP reliably, or when the measured AVIF gain is too small to offset extra processing.
Do not infer support solely from a browser’s desktop reputation. In-app browsers, enterprise-managed devices, embedded webviews, crawlers and old operating systems can follow different release schedules. A fallback is inexpensive insurance when those clients represent meaningful traffic or when an image is business-critical.

Choosing by image type and product requirement
Photographs and large editorial images
Start by encoding both AVIF and WebP versions at the display dimensions you actually need. Compare fine texture, skies, skin tones, text in the image and dark gradients. Select AVIF first when its byte reduction remains visible in your field data; otherwise WebP may be operationally simpler with little practical loss.
Logos, icons and interface graphics
Transparency is supported by both formats. Check whether the source is better represented as SVG; raster conversion is appropriate when you need a bitmap asset, but neither AVIF nor WebP replaces a vector automatically. For raster UI art, inspect transparent edges against both light and dark backgrounds after conversion.
HDR and wide-gamut photography
AVIF is the candidate with documented HDR and wide-colour-gamut support. Confirm that your colour profile, browser, operating system and display preserve the intended result. A wide-gamut file shown through a colour-managed path that collapses to a narrower space will not deliver the expected benefit.

Both formats support animation. Evaluate total file size, first-frame behaviour, frame timing, memory use and fallback behaviour. If an animation is decorative, also provide an accessible alternative or respect reduced-motion preferences in the surrounding interface; the format choice alone does not solve motion accessibility.
Implement AVIF first with WebP and JPEG or PNG fallback
The basic pattern is:
<picture>
<source srcset="hero.avif" type="image/avif">
<source srcset="hero.webp" type="image/webp">
<img src="hero.jpg" alt="Descriptive alternative text" width="1600" height="900">
</picture>
Keep the AVIF source before WebP. The browser then selects AVIF when it supports the declared MIME type, otherwise it evaluates WebP, and finally uses the JPEG fallback. The alt text belongs on the <img> element because that is the semantic image element used by assistive technology and by clients that ignore the sources.
Add responsive dimensions instead of sending one oversized file
A format switch does not make an image responsive by itself. Generate width variants for the layouts you actually serve and provide matching srcset and sizes values:

The width and height attributes reserve the intended aspect ratio and reduce layout shift. They should describe the intrinsic dimensions or an equivalent ratio, not a guessed crop. Keep each AVIF, WebP and fallback candidate aligned so the browser is choosing both a format and an appropriate width rather than downloading a needlessly large file.

Use art direction only when the crop changes
If mobile and desktop require different crops, create separate source candidates with media conditions rather than relying on CSS to hide a downloaded image. Keep the fallback image meaningful on its own, because it is still the path for clients that cannot use the modern sources.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A repeatable quality and performance test
- Define the display targets. Record the rendered width, height and crop for each template, such as a card, article hero and full-screen gallery image.
- Encode matched candidates. Produce AVIF and WebP from the same source at the same dimensions. Preserve a JPEG or PNG source where the original workflow requires it.
- Match visual quality. Adjust encoder settings until the two modern formats look comparably good at 100% and at the actual CSS display size. Inspect text, edges, gradients, faces and foliage.
- Measure transfer bytes. Record each candidate’s file size and the selected resource in the browser’s network panel. Do not compare a large AVIF with a small WebP and call the result a format test.
- Measure display timing. Test first render and complete decode on fast and constrained connections. Include at least one representative low-power phone because AVIF’s full-file display rule can change perceived loading.
- Test every fallback branch. Verify AVIF, WebP and JPEG or PNG independently, including a client that cannot decode either modern format.
- Check the production cache. Confirm that your CDN or image service varies its cache key by the selected representation and does not serve AVIF bytes to a client that requested WebP or the fallback.
- Review real traffic. Use browser and device analytics to decide whether AVIF coverage is sufficient for your audience. Recheck after major browser or app-webview changes.
The result should be a per-template policy, not a claim that one codec always wins. A photographic hero may favour AVIF, while a small icon gains little from a more complex pipeline. Keep the rule understandable enough that authors and developers can apply it consistently.
Fallbacks, caching and content negotiation pitfalls
Do not omit the fallback
MDN recommends a WebP, JPEG or PNG fallback when AVIF support is incomplete. A missing fallback can turn an otherwise valid page into a broken-image icon for an older browser, a crawler, a native app webview or a proxy that mishandles the modern type.
Declare the correct type
Use image/avif and image/webp on their respective <source> elements. Ensure the server sends a matching Content-Type. A file with an AVIF extension but an incorrect response type can be rejected or selected unpredictably.
Keep cache variants distinct
If an image CDN negotiates formats from the Accept header, its cache must distinguish the representations. If it does not, the first request can poison subsequent requests by storing one format under a URL that other clients reuse. A <picture> implementation with explicit URLs avoids some negotiation complexity, but each generated URL still needs stable cache and invalidation rules.
Best Value
Do not convert originals destructively
Retain a high-quality source asset and generate derivatives. Repeatedly converting a compressed WebP into AVIF, then back into another format, can compound artefacts. Store the source metadata and encoder settings so a new derivative can be regenerated when a crop, quality policy or browser requirement changes.
Accessibility and layout considerations that format choice cannot replace
Use concise, meaningful alternative text for informative images and an empty alt value for purely decorative images. A smaller file does not make a chart understandable, and a modern codec does not compensate for missing context in the surrounding text.
Reserve layout space with width and height attributes or an equivalent aspect-ratio rule. Lazy-load below-the-fold images when appropriate, but avoid delaying the principal above-the-fold image without a measured reason. Preloading the wrong representation can waste bytes; if you preload, use the same format-selection logic and verify that it matches the image element.

Transparency should be checked against the actual page background so an apparently clean asset does not acquire a visible matte fringe.
When to choose AVIF first, WebP first or both
| Your situation | Recommended order | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Mixed public audience and no reliable client inventory | AVIF, then WebP, then JPEG or PNG | Captures AVIF savings while preserving broad compatibility. |
| Bandwidth is the dominant constraint and analytics show strong AVIF coverage | AVIF, then WebP, then fallback | Prioritises the format that generally compresses better. |
| Simple site, conservative tooling or many unknown integrations | WebP, with JPEG or PNG fallback | Uses broad browser and library support with fewer pipeline changes. |
| HDR or wide-gamut delivery is a product requirement | AVIF first, with WebP and a conventional fallback | AVIF has the documented feature support; fallbacks cover clients that cannot use it. |
| Small assets where measured AVIF savings are negligible | WebP or the existing optimised asset | Do not add operational complexity without a meaningful user benefit. |
These are deployment defaults, not permanent labels. Revisit them when your audience, image mix, CDN or browser support changes. The correct policy is the one that meets visual and accessibility requirements while reducing bytes without introducing broken images or unacceptable decode delays.
Quick Recap
A maintenance checklist for production
- Generate AVIF, WebP and a JPEG or PNG fallback from the same source.
- Keep dimensions, crops and intended quality comparable across formats.
- Order
<source type="image/avif">before WebP, with the fallback in<img>. - Set intrinsic dimensions and responsive candidates to prevent layout shift and oversized downloads.
- Verify response MIME types, cache keys, invalidation and CDN negotiation.
- Test decode and visible-display timing on representative low-power devices and slower networks.
- Check transparency, animation, colour management and reduced-motion behaviour where relevant.
- Monitor real browser and device coverage instead of relying on a one-time compatibility assumption.
- Keep original source files and reproducible conversion settings.
