Its goal is to provide good picture quality with less data than older codecs, but the benefit varies with the video, encoder and settings. For streamers, the first practical question is whether the destination accepts AV1 ingest; the next is whether the computer can encode it in real time. YouTube Live accepts AV1, with specific bitrate and format requirements, but currently does not support AV1 for HDR streaming.
What AV1 is—and what it is not
AV1 (AOMedia Video 1) is an open video compression format developed by the Alliance for Open Media. A codec encodes video into a form suitable for delivery and decodes it for playback. AV1 is not a streaming platform, an encoder application, or a guarantee that a particular platform or viewer device supports it.
The Alliance for Open Media describes AV1 as intended for high-quality compression and use cases including high-resolution video and adaptive streaming. It says: “AV1 is optimized for high-resolution content such as 4K and 8K video and supports modern technologies like adaptive streaming and HDR content.” The specification is freely available, and implementers do not need to be Alliance members.
Why streamers consider AV1
AV1’s main attraction is compression efficiency: it may deliver comparable visual quality at a lower bitrate, or improve quality when bitrate is fixed. The size of any gain depends on the content, encoder, settings and comparison method. Fast-moving gameplay, a static scene and detailed animation can behave differently, so no single bitrate-saving percentage should be treated as a promise for every stream.

- Intel Arc A380 Chipset
- 6GB, 96-bit, GDDR6 memory, 15.5 Gbps graphics memory speed
- 3x DisplayPort 2.0 ready, up to 8K@60Hz, 1x HDMI 2.0
The Alliance for Open Media’s features page displays a “30% better compression” claim and attributes the supporting results to a Bitmovin multi-codec dataset. That is the organization’s summary of a cited test, not a universal result for live streams; it should not be used to predict the bandwidth or quality of an individual broadcast.
Can you stream AV1 to YouTube Live?
Yes. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists AV1 as an ingest codec over RTMP/RTMPS. Ingest is the video sent by the broadcaster to the platform; it is distinct from the formats viewers receive. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and network connections. That platform behavior should not be assumed for other services.

YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery to its servers. For the AV1 and H.265 settings listed in its current guidance, it specifies CBR, recommends a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), and lists support up to 60 fps. The bitrate figures below are YouTube ingest guidance, not universal AV1 settings:
| YouTube Live ingest resolution and frame rate | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
At 3840 × 2160 and above, YouTube specifies at least two tile columns for AV1-encoded streams. Its guidance says AV1 is not supported for HDR ingest and recommends H.265/HEVC for HDR. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and stream-health indicators before an event, since platform requirements can change.

Will your computer encode AV1 in real time?
AV1 support has two separate sides: encoding a live feed and decoding video for playback. A device that can decode AV1 does not necessarily have an AV1 encoder suitable for a live broadcast. Real-time AV1 encoding can be demanding, so the available hardware and the intended resolution and frame rate matter.
OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide documents hardware AV1 encoders in recent AMD Radeon RX 7000, NVIDIA RTX 40 and Intel Arc GPU families. OBS also documents software AV1 options such as SVT-AV1 and libaom-av1, but notes that real-time software encoding requires a high-end CPU. Hardware encoders use a dedicated component of the GPU; encoder generation and quality vary, so the presence of AV1 hardware alone does not promise a particular result.

Before buying hardware
- Check the exact GPU model and whether OBS exposes an AV1 hardware encoder for it; do not rely on AV1 decoding support alone.
- Confirm the destination accepts AV1 ingest for the kind of broadcast you plan to make.
- Test a representative stream at your intended resolution and frame rate, while running the game or production workload you will use live.
- Compare the result and system load with your existing codec and settings. Upgrade only if your current setup cannot meet the need and the change is worthwhile for your use.
There is no evidence here to rank individual GPU models or establish that an AV1 upgrade is worthwhile for every streamer.

| Decision point | What to check |
|---|---|
| Platform ingest | Verify that the service accepts the codec from creators. Viewer playback support does not establish ingest support. |
| Bitrate and quality | Compare the platform’s limits at your target resolution and frame rate, using representative motion and detail. Compression efficiency varies by encoder and content. |
| Encoding capacity | Confirm hardware or CPU encoding can keep up in real time without compromising the rest of the stream workload. |
| HDR or other format needs | YouTube currently excludes AV1 for HDR ingest and recommends H.265/HEVC for HDR. |
| Viewer delivery | YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats; do not assume another destination offers the same conversion. |
If your destination does not list AV1 ingest, do not send AV1 merely because your encoder can produce it. Check that platform’s current documentation and use a supported format. YouTube’s settings are not instructions for Twitch or any other service.
AV1 and keeping a YouTube channel live
AV1 is relevant when encoding a live feed in real time. A different workflow is to keep a previously uploaded recording or playlist running as a YouTube live stream; that does not require a camera or a live AV1 encoder. If you want an always-on prerecorded stream without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video or playlist from the cloud. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, nothing has to stay on at home. It streams uploaded video at the quality provided, up to 4K 60 fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
