Live streaming remains a major creator medium: Stream Hatchet estimated that viewers watched 36.4 billion hours globally in 2025, up 6% from 2024. But the numbers do not produce a simple platform leaderboard. Reports cover different services, categories and periods—and a Q2 2026 report added all of YouTube Live alongside YouTube Gaming, changing what its totals represent. These live streaming statistics and trends are most useful when read with that scope in mind.
How much live streaming did audiences watch?
Stream Hatchet’s 2025 annual figures, summarized by GameSquare, put global live-streaming viewership at 36.4 billion hours, 6% above 2024 and close to its reported 2021 peak of 37.1 billion hours. These are estimates from an industry research provider, not an independently audited census. Read GameSquare’s summary of Stream Hatchet’s 2025 report.

For a more recent but narrower snapshot, Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet counted 21.49 billion hours watched across the platforms tracked in their Q1 2026 report, up 2.83% quarter over quarter. They also reported 330.3 million hours streamed and 11.75 million unique channels in that quarter. Those figures describe separate measures: audience watch time, creator broadcast time and channels that went live. The report’s platform set defines the aggregate, so it should not be treated as a count of every live-streaming service. See the Q1 2026 Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet report.

Which platforms drew the most viewers in Q2 2026?
In the Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet Q2 report, YouTube Live recorded 12.97 billion hours watched, or 60.3% of the tracked total. Twitch had 4.52 billion hours, YouTube Gaming 1.79 billion and Kick 1.34 billion. The report added YouTube Live alongside YouTube Gaming for the first time; that scope change makes direct comparisons with earlier gaming-only YouTube figures misleading.

What do the creator-supply and audience averages show?
The same Q1 report counted 330.3 million hours streamed and 11.75 million unique channels across its tracked set. Hours streamed show how much broadcasters were live; unique channels count channels that broadcast. Neither figure tells you how many people watched a typical stream or how many channels built a sustainable audience.

For Q2 2026, the report estimated about 308 viewers per channel on YouTube Live, compared with about 85 on Kick, 78 on YouTube Gaming and 23 on Twitch. These averages suggest audience concentration within the report’s measurements; they are not a forecast for a new or individual creator. A high platform-wide average does not establish that discovery is easier or that a particular channel will attract more viewers. The Q2 report explains its platform comparisons.

Gaming remains a major viewing category
Stream Hatchet’s 2025 annual summary counted 4.6 billion hours watched for first-person shooters, making the genre the most popular gaming genre in its figures. That is a genre-level measure, not a guarantee that any one game or channel will perform similarly.

Conversation and real-world streams matter too
The annual summary reported that Just Chatting grew 25% and IRL streams grew 19%; non-gaming content reached 22% of Twitch viewership. The figures support a broader view of live content than gameplay alone, including personality-led conversation and real-world formats. They refer to the report’s stated categories and platform coverage, not every service’s audience mix. See the 2025 category findings.
Events can turn watching into participation
Twitch reported more than 8.6 billion hours of gaming content watched on its service from January 1 through September 1, 2026. Over the same period, DropsEnabled streams generated 1.6 billion hours, up 46%, and 40 million users participated and claimed Drops. Twitch says these globally sourced figures use its internal data; watch-hour values are rounded, and growth compares with the same dates in 2025. Drops are an example of a platform feature connecting viewing to participation, not evidence that every event or creator will see the same effect. Read Twitch’s September 2026 gaming snapshot.

How to interpret the apparent 2025–2026 trends
- Separate time periods. A full-year estimate for 2025, a quarterly aggregate for Q1 2026 and a platform breakdown for Q2 2026 answer different questions.
- Check platform and category coverage. Q2’s YouTube Live addition means its total is not directly comparable to earlier reports that counted YouTube Gaming alone.
- Keep the measures distinct. Hours watched measure audience activity; hours streamed measure broadcasting time; unique channels count broadcasters; viewers per channel is an average, not a typical-channel guarantee.
- Do not turn totals into creator forecasts. None of these statistics establishes an individual channel’s likely growth, discovery prospects or earnings.
Read together, the figures show a large market and notable YouTube Live viewing in Q2 2026, alongside strong gaming and non-gaming formats. They do not form a clean continuous growth curve: the periods and coverage differ, and creator-supply figures cannot be inferred from watch hours.

What the statistics cannot tell creators
The cited reports do not establish typical creator earnings, platform-wide income, or guaranteed growth outcomes. Nor do platform-level averages reveal how views are distributed among channels or how an individual channel will be recommended. Use the figures to understand market scale and content context, then make channel decisions using your own audience data, format and goals.
