For a 1080p YouTube stream using H.264, start with 14 Mbps at 30 fps or 17 Mbps at 60 fps, set rate control to CBR, and use a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube lists 5 Mbps and 6 Mbps as the respective minimum video bitrates. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that your computer or connection can sustain them. Choose the frame rate your setup can maintain, then test with representative movement and audio before going live.
Best OBS settings for 1080p YouTube Live
Use these as a starting point for an H.264 stream. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, gives different bitrate recommendations for 30 and 60 fps. Match the row to your frame rate rather than treating 1080p as a single bitrate setting. YouTube’s live encoder settings also gives separate figures for other ingest codecs.

All numeric bitrate figures in this table are YouTube’s current recommendations or minimums for H.264, not measured results or upload-speed guarantees. The appropriate bitrate range depends on codec, resolution and frame rate. Do not carry the H.264 values over to H.265/HEVC or AV1; consult the matching codec row in YouTube’s guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose 30 or 60 fps for your content and setup
Use 30 fps when motion is modest or capacity is limited
Talk shows, presentations and other less movement-heavy content can be suitable at 30 fps. It has a lower recommended H.264 video bitrate than 60 fps, so it is a reasonable choice when network or encoding capacity is constrained. It is not automatically the right choice for every stream; check the result with the content you actually plan to show.

Use 60 fps when smooth fast motion matters
Fast-moving gameplay or action can benefit from 60 fps, provided the computer can encode it consistently and the connection can sustain the higher bitrate target. YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 1080p60 is 17 Mbps, compared with 14 Mbps for 1080p30. A higher frame rate increases both encoding and network load; choose the highest rate your system and connection can maintain rather than assuming 60 fps always looks better.
Set up OBS and YouTube for a test stream
- Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard. Use it as a starting point: OBS says the wizard considers what you want to do, your computer hardware and network conditions. The OBS Quick Start Guide is from 2021, so treat its workflow as general guidance rather than a guarantee that every label is identical in all releases. OBS Quick Start Guide.
- Set the output for the stream layout. Target 1920 × 1080 for 1080p. Fit your canvas and sources to that layout; the exact canvas workflow depends on your production. Set 30 or 60 fps according to the movement and capacity considerations above.
- Choose the ingest codec and matching settings. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for live video. For H.264, use the matching bitrate recommendation above, CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends not exceeding 4 seconds. Keep the interval consistent: OBS notes that a consistent keyframe interval helps smooth transitions between YouTube quality options. OBS guidance on YouTube transcoding.
- Set and verify audio. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio, with 44.1 kHz listed for stereo. In OBS, open Settings → Audio and watch the Audio Mixer meters. OBS captures desktop audio and microphone by default in its documented setup, but select devices manually if the meters do not move or the wrong device is active. OBS Quick Start Guide.
- Use the appropriate SDR color format. For SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709, square pixels, progressive scan and 8-bit depth. HDR has different guidance: YouTube lists H.265 for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR in this guidance. Do not apply SDR settings as if they were HDR specifications. YouTube live encoder settings.
- Connect OBS to YouTube securely. YouTube recommends RTMPS. In YouTube Live Control Room, select the stream and copy its stream key into OBS’s stream configuration; menu labels may vary by OBS and YouTube interface version. Treat the key as a password: it directs the encoder feed to your stream, so do not publish or share it. YouTube stream key guidance.
- Record or stream a short preflight test. OBS strongly encourages a test lasting a few minutes before your first stream. Include movement and audio similar to the real broadcast. YouTube likewise advises representative tests and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. YouTube testing guidance.

Change one relevant setting at a time and run another representative test; a bitrate value alone does not identify every cause of instability.

- Connection cannot sustain the target: YouTube advises running a speed test and choosing a quality that results in a reliable stream. If the recommended bitrate is not sustainable, reduce the frame rate or output resolution, then test again. A minimum bitrate is not a guarantee of smooth delivery.
- Motion stutters or OBS cannot keep up: Check whether the computer can encode the chosen frame rate. Try 30 fps instead of 60, or lower the output resolution, and compare with a test that includes realistic motion.
- Audio is missing or the wrong device is heard: Check the Audio Mixer meters, then verify the input and output devices under Settings → Audio. Manually select the intended devices if needed.
- Stream does not connect as expected: Confirm that OBS is using the intended YouTube stream key and RTMPS delivery. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace it through YouTube’s stream settings before reconnecting.
- Viewers do not see every quality option immediately: YouTube transcodes all streams, including the source feed, into a range of playback formats. That is platform processing, not a reason to change your source to a different frame rate without testing. A consistent keyframe interval supports smooth transitions between quality options. OBS guidance on YouTube transcoding.
Check YouTube’s rules before scheduling a live stream
Correct encoder settings do not grant rights to the video, music or other material in a broadcast. Use material you own or have permission to stream, and review YouTube’s live streaming guidance and applicable copyright rules before broadcasting. Do not assume that a pre-recorded video is cleared simply because it is being sent through OBS as a live feed. For a practical preflight, use StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist.
Optional gear: only when your source calls for it
A capture card is relevant if you want to bring console or other external video into OBS. OBS supports video-capture sources for webcams and capture cards, and YouTube describes encoder streaming as a way to use external audio and video hardware. A capture card is not required for every 1080p OBS stream, and it does not set your bitrate, frame rate or keyframe interval. External audio hardware is likewise optional: first verify your devices and levels in the Audio Mixer rather than assuming new gear is necessary.
