Automation can make EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) compliance more manageable by supporting recurring work such as tracking software components, finding vulnerabilities, routing fixes, testing security updates, and preserving evidence. It does not make a product compliant on its own: manufacturers remain responsible for meeting the regulation’s requirements and demonstrating conformity.
What the EU Cyber Resilience Act requires
The Cyber Resilience Act, Regulation (EU) 2024/2847, sets cybersecurity requirements for products with digital elements and obligations for the economic operators covered by the law. Whether a particular product or organization is in scope depends on the regulation’s definitions and exclusions; the rules should not be assumed to cover every product or software service. Read the regulation on EUR-Lex.

For manufacturers, compliance is an ongoing product-security responsibility, not a one-time document exercise. The regulation addresses security throughout product development and support, including risk-appropriate product security, vulnerability handling, security updates, testing, and technical documentation.

When the CRA applies
The CRA uses staged application dates. As of 11 October 2026, Article 14 reporting obligations are already in effect; the general application date is still ahead. Build plans around the relevant obligation and date rather than treating 2027 as the only milestone. The regulation sets out the dates and provisions.

Where automation supports compliance work
The CRA requires processes and outcomes, not a particular automation product. The workflows below are practical places to use automation, provided the resulting data and decisions are reviewed and fit the product and its risks.
| Compliance workflow | What automation can support | What still needs accountable review |
|---|---|---|
| Component records and SBOM | Collect dependency data from builds, maintain component records, and produce a software bill of materials in a commonly used, machine-readable format. Annex I Part II specifies coverage of at least top-level dependencies. | Check that the SBOM is accurate, complete for the required scope, and tied to the product version being documented. |
| Vulnerability handling | Correlate component and vulnerability data, route findings to owners, track remediation, and retain a record of decisions and actions. | Assess product-specific impact, prioritize risk, decide on remediation, and ensure vulnerability-handling and coordinated disclosure processes work in practice. |
| Security testing and reviews | Schedule and run repeatable checks in development and release workflows, then retain results for follow-up. | Determine whether tests and reviews are effective for the product, interpret findings, and resolve security issues. Annex I Part II requires manufacturers to apply effective and regular tests and reviews of product security. |
| Security updates | Coordinate release steps, distribute updates securely, and track delivery and availability to users. | Validate the update, ensure it addresses the issue without introducing unacceptable risk, and meet the applicable requirements for timely dissemination. Where automatic security updates are applicable, Annex I Part I provides for installation within an appropriate timeframe, enabled by default, with a clear opt-out mechanism. |
| Technical documentation and evidence | Preserve versioned records of components, test results, vulnerability decisions, fixes, and releases, with traceability to the product and release. | Ensure the records are relevant, accurate, and sufficient for the applicable technical documentation and conformity obligations. |
These are enabling functions, not a checklist that guarantees compliance. A scanner, dashboard, generated SBOM, or automated workflow is useful only to the extent that its outputs are reliable and the manufacturer acts on them.

How Article 14 reporting changes incident workflows
Article 14 requires manufacturers to notify the designated coordinating CSIRT and ENISA through the single reporting platform about actively exploited vulnerabilities and severe incidents affecting product security. The deadlines are short and staged, so an organization needs a way to detect, assess, escalate, and document a qualifying event without waiting for an ordinary release or review cycle. Check Article 14 for the exact triggers, required content, and exceptions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsActively exploited vulnerabilities
- Early warning: without undue delay and within 24 hours of awareness.
- Vulnerability notification: within 72 hours.
- Final report: no later than 14 days after a corrective or mitigating measure is available.
Severe incidents affecting product security
- Early warning: within 24 hours.
- Incident notification: within 72 hours.
- Final report: within one month after the incident notification.
Automation can help timestamp awareness, open an escalation, gather relevant product and incident records, track deadlines, and route submissions for approval. It cannot determine by itself whether the legal trigger is met or whether a notification is complete. Define decision ownership and escalation paths, and verify the applicable Article 14 requirements before configuring reporting rules.

How to build an automation plan that produces usable evidence
- Determine scope first. Map the product, manufacturer role, and any other relevant economic operators to the CRA’s definitions and exclusions. Do not select tooling on the assumption that every product or service follows the same route.
- Map legal duties to operational records. For each in-scope product, identify which records show component composition, security testing, vulnerability assessment and remediation, update handling, and conformity work.
- Connect records to product versions. Link component inventories, findings, test results, decisions, and updates to the affected product and release. An unversioned record may not establish which product was assessed or fixed.
- Define human decision points. Assign owners for risk assessment, remediation approval, disclosure coordination, and reportability decisions. Automate routing and reminders, but make clear who is accountable for each decision.
- Exercise time-sensitive paths. Test whether teams can identify an event, escalate it, collect necessary information, and meet applicable reporting deadlines. A workflow that exists in a tool but is not operationally understood is not a dependable process.
- Review the evidence and conformity route. Check that retained records support the product’s applicable obligations and conformity assessment. Some products are classified as important or critical and face stricter conformity assessment procedures; tool selection does not alter the applicable route. See the EUR-Lex CRA summary.
What to evaluate in compliance tooling
Assess tools against the work your products and teams must perform, rather than treating a broad compliance label as proof of coverage. Useful evaluation questions include:
- Does the workflow cover the product lifecycle and support period that matter for the product?
- Can component and vulnerability data be traced to specific product versions, and can teams assess data quality?
- Does it integrate with development, testing, remediation, and update processes without losing accountability or evidence?
- Can it preserve an auditable history of findings, decisions, approvals, and actions?
- Can it support time-sensitive escalation and reporting while leaving legal trigger and content decisions to responsible people?
- Does the product’s category or criticality affect the conformity assessment route, and have you addressed that route separately from tooling?
The CRA does not certify a dashboard, scanner, or SBOM generator as sufficient. Product-specific risk assessment, validation, remediation decisions, documentation quality, and conformity assessment remain necessary.
