Auto-pause is not a universal Bluetooth or streaming setting. On compatible headphones and earbuds, a wear sensor can pause playback when you take them off; whether playback resumes when you put them back on depends on the model. TVs and streaming devices usually rely on a remote or supported app for manual pause and resume.
How headphone auto-pause works
On supported headphones or earbuds, a sensor detects whether the device is being worn and sends a playback command to the connected phone or other device. The feature depends on the headphone model, its settings and the media app—not just on Bluetooth being connected.

Pause and resume are separate behaviors. Some products pause when removed but do not automatically resume when replaced, or offer different controls depending on the model. For example, Apple documents different playback controls across AirPods models: some pause when an earbud is removed, some use a stem press, and AirPods Max can pause when taken off. Apple also documents an optional pause-when-falling-asleep feature for selected models when used with listed Apple devices. Check the instructions for your exact model rather than assuming all headphones behave alike. Apple’s AirPods instructions.

How to turn on auto-pause
Look for the setting in the manufacturer’s companion app. These documented paths are examples, not universal menus; app names and labels can change.

Sony headphones
- Open the Sound Connect app.
- Select All device settings, then Controls.
- Enable Pauses when the headphones are taken off.
Sony’s guidance for the relevant products also notes that wear detection is unavailable while the supplied headphone cable is connected. Sony support: headphones pause when removed.
Wyze Buds and headphones
For Wyze Buds, open the Wyze app, select the Buds, open Settings, and turn on Auto Pause. Wyze also documents an Auto Pause setting and automatic pause-and-resume behavior for its headphones. Confirm the steps for your specific product in Wyze’s Buds instructions and Wyze’s headphone instructions.

Why auto-pause may not work
If playback keeps going after you remove your headphones, check the feature and its conditions in this order:
- Confirm model support. Not every headphone or earbud has a wearing sensor. Check the manual or support page for the exact model.
- Check the app setting. Make sure the relevant auto-pause or wear-detection control is enabled.
- Update the companion app and firmware. Wyze’s troubleshooting guidance includes updating headphone firmware and confirming Auto Pause is on.
- Try another supported media app. Sony notes that some music apps do not support automatic playback control.
- Check for conditions affecting detection. Sony warns that humidity inside the ear pads can slow wearing detection or prevent it from detecting removal. For the Sony products covered by its support page, a connected supplied cable also disables wear detection.
If the headphones pause when removed but do not resume when replaced, check the model’s instructions for resume behavior. Removal-triggered pausing alone does not establish that automatic resume is available or enabled.

Manual pause controls for TVs and streaming devices
On a TV or streaming device, pause is generally a command you give with a remote or supported app, rather than a feature triggered by wearing sensors.
Android TV remote
While media is playing, press the center button on the remote’s D-pad to pause; press it again to resume. Android TV playback controls.

Google Media Controls
Google Media Controls in the Google Home app can control supported Google streaming devices, Cast-compatible TVs and speakers, and Nest or Home devices. The phone must be on the same Wi-Fi network as the target device, and controls depend on platform and device support. See Google’s Media Controls instructions.

- Whether it resumes automatically when put back on.
- Whether the feature can be switched on or off in a companion app.
- Which app and firmware conditions apply, and whether a cable disables detection.
- Which manual button, touch control or other fallback is available.
Official support information documents auto-pause on selected AirPods, Sony and Wyze products, but does not establish a best model or a market-wide reliability ranking.
