When Claude Code cannot find a file or text looks garbled on Windows, first check how Claude Code is running and which environment is interpreting the path. Anthropic documents two Windows routes: WSL or native Windows with Git Bash. Its retrieved documentation does not identify a specific Windows text-encoding or Unicode-filename defect, or a Claude Code-specific encoding fix.
Start by identifying the Windows execution route
Anthropic documents Windows 10 and later with either WSL 1 or 2, or native Windows using Git for Windows and Git Bash. These routes use different shells and may represent the same project directory differently, so diagnose a path from the environment running Claude Code rather than assuming a Windows path will work everywhere. Anthropic says, “Both WSL 1 and WSL 2 are supported.” Anthropic’s setup guide covers both options.

| Route | What to check |
|---|---|
| WSL | Claude Code runs in the Linux environment. Check that Linux npm and Node are selected, and use a path understood by that environment. |
| Native Windows with Git Bash | Git for Windows is required. Check that Git Bash is available and that paths are interpreted in this native Windows shell. |
Native Windows with Git Bash
If Git for Windows is installed portably, Anthropic documents the CLAUDE_CODE_GIT_BASH_PATH environment variable for specifying the location of bash.exe. In PowerShell, the documented example is:
$env:CLAUDE_CODE_GIT_BASH_PATH="C:Program FilesGitbinbash.exe"
This sets the variable for the shown PowerShell session. Use the actual location of bash.exe on your computer. See the setup instructions for the native route.

In WSL, make sure Linux npm and Node are being used
Windows installations of npm or Node can be exposed to WSL and selected instead of Linux installations. Anthropic’s WSL troubleshooting page associates Windows npm with setup failures and Windows Node with a node: not found launch error. In the WSL shell where Claude Code runs, check:
which npm
which node
Anthropic says the results should be Linux paths beginning with /usr/, not Windows paths beginning with /mnt/c/. If the commands resolve under /mnt/c/, the runtime being selected is a likely place to investigate. The WSL page suggests installing Node through the Linux distribution’s package manager or nvm; consult current installation instructions before copying installation commands, since the retrieved WSL page is an older Russian-language version. See Anthropic’s WSL troubleshooting page.
Check that additional directory paths exist in the running environment
The Claude Code CLI reference says --add-dir accepts additional working directories and validates that each path exists as a directory. If adding a directory fails, check its spelling, quoting and whether the path is valid in the shell and process context running Claude Code before treating the problem as an encoding issue. Anthropic’s CLI reference documents the flag.

- In WSL, confirm that the path is valid from the Linux environment.
- In native Windows with Git Bash, confirm that the path is valid in that environment.
- Do not assume a drive-letter path, a WSL mount such as
/mnt/c/, and a Git Bash path are interchangeable. Which form works depends on the execution context; check it there.
For a Windows MCP server using npx, check the command wrapper
For a local MCP server that launches npx on native Windows, Anthropic’s MCP guide gives this command pattern:
claude mcp add my-server -- cmd /c npx -y @some/package
The guide says Windows cannot directly execute npx in this context and reports a “Connection closed” error without the cmd /c wrapper. The retrieved guide is an older Indonesian-language page, so check the current documentation for the applicable version before relying on it. See Anthropic’s MCP guide.
Separate text display problems from file lookup failures
The retrieved Anthropic pages do not establish a particular Claude Code defect involving Windows-1252, UTF-8, console code pages, byte-order marks (BOMs), or Unicode filenames. They also do not document a Claude Code-specific encoding remedy. That absence is not proof that no such issue exists; it means a code-page change cannot be presented as an Anthropic-documented fix.
