Aura RGB vs ARGB: How to Tell the Difference and Connect Them Safely

Aura RGB is ASUS’s conventional 12V four-pin connection; ARGB is addressable 5V lighting. Learn how to identify headers, match voltages, and check board limits.

Aura RGB and ARGB are not the same connection. In ASUS motherboard documentation, Aura RGB is the conventional 12V, four-pin RGB header; its 5V, three-pin addressable header is called Addressable Gen 2. ARGB can control individual LEDs when the lighting hardware and control system support it. Match the device’s voltage and connector to the motherboard header before plugging anything in: connecting a 5V strip to a 12V header can damage it.

What is the difference between Aura RGB and ARGB?

Aura RGB is ASUS’s name for its conventional 12V RGB header. ARGB means addressable RGB; ASUS calls its 5V addressable connection Addressable Gen 2. In the common motherboard connector types described by ASUS and MSI, conventional RGB uses four pins at 12V, while ARGB uses three pins at 5V, typically with one position blocked or absent.

Feature Conventional RGB / ASUS Aura RGB Addressable RGB / ASUS Addressable Gen 2
Example header voltage 12V 5V
Common connector Four-pin Three-pin, commonly with a blocked or missing position
Lighting control Controls the strip as a conventional RGB lighting device; do not assume individual-LED effects Can control LEDs individually for patterns, depending on the strip, motherboard, and software
ASUS header name Aura RGB Addressable Gen 2
MSI header name JRGB JRAINBOW
Alignment Match the cable marker to the header’s +12V pin Match the cable marker to the header’s +5V pin

These are connector-family conventions, not a guarantee that every product plug or lighting effect is identical. Check the exact motherboard and lighting-device manuals rather than relying on the word “RGB” in a product name. Aura Sync or another software feature cannot make a 12V header electrically compatible with a 5V device.

Why does ARGB support individual lighting effects?

An addressable strip can expose individual LEDs to control, enabling effects such as patterns that move along the strip or set different LEDs to different colors. ASUS describes its Addressable Gen 2 header as supporting individually addressable WS2812B strips. The effects available in practice depend on the specific strip, motherboard, and software; the label ARGB alone does not guarantee that every feature is supported.

  • 【Perfect Match】The PC fan can be used not only as a case fan, but is also suitable for use with a cpu cooler to create a cooling effect together, which can take away the dry heat from the case and the high temperature generated by the CPU in operation, allowing for maximum cooling; Ideal for cases, radiators and CPU coolers.
  • [Excellent LED light] The high-brightness LED atomizing argb fan blade can effectively reflect the light, making the ARGB lighting effect softer, and it matches the cooler and case more perfectly. Up to 17 modes of light effects with ARGB support, color can be managed and synchronized through the port on motherboard.
  • 【High Performance Cooling Fan】 Automatic speed control of the motherboard through the 4PIN PWM fan cable interface, which can determine the speed according to the temperature of the motherboard, with a maximum speed of 1550RPM. Configured with up to 55cm of cable for PWM series control of fans, ideal for cases and CPU coolers.
  • 【Silent Fan Size】 Model: TL-C12C-S X3, Size: 120*120*25mm, Speed: 1550RPM±10%, Noise ≤ 25.6dBA Connector: 4pin pwm, Current: 0.20A, Air Pressure: 1.53mm H2O, Air Flow: 66.17CFM, Higher air flow for improved cooling performance.
  • 【Quality Bearings】The carefully developed quality S-FDB bearings solve the problem of pc cooling fan blade shaking in lifting mode, keeping fan noise to a minimum while providing maximum cooling performance when needed and extending the life of the fan.

How can you identify the correct motherboard header?

  1. Find the exact motherboard model and revision. Check the official specifications and user manual for header names, voltage, location, number of headers, and electrical limits.
  2. Check the lighting device. Read its label and manual to identify whether it requires 12V RGB or 5V ARGB. A fan’s motor connector and its lighting connector are separate; a three-pin fan motor plug does not by itself mean the lighting is ARGB.
  3. Compare voltage and pin layout together. The common examples are 12V four-pin RGB and 5V three-pin ARGB. Do not infer the correct connection from pin count alone.
  4. Power the system off before connecting or removing lighting. Align the cable arrow or marker with the header’s labeled voltage pin. Never force the plug or reverse its alignment.
  5. Confirm the board’s limits. Follow the exact manual for maximum current, supported LED count, strip length, and any combined limit across headers.

MSI warns that a 5V strip connected to its 12V JRGB port will be damaged. Treat voltage matching as essential, not as a software setting.

What if the motherboard has no 5V ARGB header?

Check whether the lighting-device manufacturer supports a compatible standalone ARGB controller. Fractal Design documents a controller as an option for its Prisma AL fans when a motherboard lacks a three-pin 5V header. That example does not establish compatibility for other fans or strips: confirm that the controller supports the specific device and its lighting requirements. Do not assume a controller converts 12V RGB into 5V ARGB unless its own documentation explicitly says so.

Which electrical limits should you use?

Limits vary by motherboard, so the exact model’s manual takes precedence over general figures. ASUS Taiwan Support’s guidance updated November 2, 2025, states 3A at 5V for an Addressable Gen 2 header and 3A at 12V for an Aura RGB header; the guidance also describes up to 500 LEDs for the addressable connection. These are figures from that guidance, not universal ratings.

The TUF GAMING B550-PRO user manual gives a board-specific example: 3A at 5V and a combined maximum of 500 LEDs across its Addressable Gen 2 headers, plus 3A at 12V and a maximum strip length of 3m for its Aura RGB headers. Do not apply these limits to a different motherboard.
