AT&T told some iPhone 18 Pro Max customers to install iOS 27.0.1 after reports of calls, texts and mobile data failing or phones showing SOS. But reports from users who updated are mixed: many said the problem continued, while a few described improvement. There is no confirmed cause or reliable evidence that the update resolves the issue.
What is happening to some iPhone 18 Pro Max users on AT&T?
Reports describe some iPhone 18 Pro Max devices on AT&T losing the ability to place or receive calls, sending or receiving texts late or not at all, and having disrupted mobile data. Some phones reportedly show SOS. AT&T warned affected customers that calls, texts, data and even 911 calls could be affected. The reports do not mean every iPhone 18 Pro Max or every AT&T customer has the problem. Macworld’s coverage describes the customer reports and AT&T’s message.

Does iOS 27.0.1 fix the AT&T cellular problem?
AT&T advised recipients to install iOS 27.0.1, but that recommendation is not proof the update fixes the fault. Macworld reported that many users said their symptoms persisted after updating; a few comments described possible improvement. These are anecdotal accounts, not controlled tests, and they do not establish a success rate. MacRumors reported that Apple’s release notes did not identify the AT&T cellular issue as fixed. Apple’s public listing shows iOS 27.0.1 was released September 28, 2026; the reporting describes the update as addressing a Face ID issue on iPhone 18 Pro models. Apple’s iOS release listing provides the release information.
If you are affected, install the update if it is available for your phone, but do not assume it will restore reliable service. If the problem continues afterward, move on to connectivity checks and an AT&T investigation rather than repeatedly updating or treating a brief improvement as confirmation that the issue is resolved.

What is known about the cause?
Apple had not publicly confirmed a cause in the coverage available as of October 2, 2026. MacRumors noted that the US iPhone 18 Pro Max has a different cellular modem configuration from some other new iPhones, but said it was unclear whether that difference contributes. It is an observation, not an established explanation; the available reporting does not show that a particular modem is responsible. MacRumors’ report discusses the uncertainty.
What to do if your iPhone shows SOS or loses service
Apple’s steps below are general reconnection troubleshooting, not confirmed fixes for this AT&T incident. Follow them in order, then ask AT&T to check the account and local network if service remains unreliable. Apple’s SOS support page explains the status and troubleshooting options.

- Restart the iPhone. Turn it off, wait briefly, and turn it back on. Test calls, texts and mobile data after it starts.
- Check for carrier settings updates. Connect to Wi-Fi, then open Settings > General > About and wait for a prompt to install carrier settings if one appears.
- Contact AT&T. Ask the carrier to check account status, coverage and local outages, whether the device is blocked, and whether the plan is set up correctly. Apple specifically recommends contacting the carrier for these checks.
- Contact Apple if AT&T rules out its side. If the carrier confirms there is no account or network issue and hardware is suspected, arrange Apple service. A repair or replacement may be considered, but it is not a confirmed solution to this reported incident.
What SOS means—and what to know about emergency calls
Apple says SOS or SOS only means the device is not connected to its cellular network. The phone may still be able to make emergency calls through other carrier networks in the United States, Canada and Australia. Apple’s guidance is conditional: do not assume an emergency call will connect. If you need urgent help and the phone cannot connect, use another available phone or ask someone nearby to call emergency services. Apple’s support guidance covers SOS status and emergency calling.
