What is the Advanced Television Systems Committee?
ATSC is an industry standards organization. Its members represent broadcasting, professional services and equipment, motion pictures, consumer technology, computing, cable, satellite, and semiconductor industries. What does an ATSC standard mean?
ATSC defines an ATSC Standard as “A document that states basic specifications or criteria that are necessary for effective implementation and interoperability of Advanced Television Systems.” In other words, ATSC is the organization; an ATSC standard is a technical document it publishes. How do ATSC 1.0 and ATSC 3.0 differ?
ATSC 1.0 is the retrospective name for the organization’s first digital television standard. ATSC says it brought high-definition television and broadcast surround sound. ATSC 3.0 is the newer IP-based terrestrial broadcast system. ATSC describes it as a suite of standards and recommended practices, not one standalone document. ATSC’s overview of ATSC 3.0 and its summary of ATSC 1.0 and 3.0 explain the generations.
| Aspect | ATSC 1.0 | ATSC 3.0 |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Retrospective designation for ATSC’s first digital television standard. | An IP-based terrestrial broadcast system defined by a suite of standards and recommended practices. |
| Capabilities highlighted by ATSC | High-definition television and broadcast surround sound. | Features include higher capacity for Ultra High-Definition services, robust reception across a range of devices, improved efficiency, IP transport, advanced emergency alerting, personalization, and interactivity. |
| Compatibility | Earlier ATSC support does not establish ATSC 3.0 support. | Fundamentally different from predecessor systems and largely incompatible with them; check the exact receiver and service. |
These are capabilities of the ATSC 3.0 system, not a guarantee that every broadcaster or receiver offers every feature. ATSC lists the document A/300:2026-04, “ATSC 3.0 System,” as approved on 14 April 2026; that is an approval date for a standards document, not a claim about local availability. The ATSC documents listing provides current document information.

What does ATSC mean when choosing a TV or tuner?
For a viewer, ATSC matters when checking whether a television or tuner can receive a particular over-the-air broadcast system. Support for an earlier ATSC generation does not automatically mean a device supports ATSC 3.0. Check the exact model specifications and the broadcasts available in your area before relying on a feature or reception capability.
