There is no universal age cutoff. If you are considering scanning one, its condition and safe opening angle matter more than your guess about its market value: never force it flat, and consult the holding institution or a conservator if it is fragile or difficult to open.
What makes a book rare?
“Rare book” is a description shaped by context. Libraries, collectors, and the book market may consider different things: how few copies survive, a book’s historical or research importance, its printing or binding, its provenance, its monetary value, or its fragile condition. Age can matter, but age alone does not establish rarity.

The Library of Congress Rare Book and Special Collections Division generally includes materials printed before 1801. Its stated reasons for collecting also include rarity, monetary value, printing and binding history, provenance or association interest, fragility, uniqueness, and scarcity. That is one institution’s collecting scope, not a rule that applies everywhere. Library of Congress Rare Book and Special Collections Division
Special collections also extend beyond bound books. The Library of Congress overview describes approximately 750,000 holdings across formats that include broadsides, pamphlets, programs, prints, posters, photographs, and medieval and Renaissance manuscripts. The figure is for that division’s broad holdings, not a count of rare books worldwide; the current overview page does not state the year of the figure. Can you scan an old or rare book without damaging it?
Sometimes, but no scanner or cradle makes every book safe to scan. The key questions are whether the book can open to a safe angle, whether its binding and pages can tolerate handling, and whether the capture setup supports it without pressure or excessive light and heat.
The Library of Congress’s digitization guidance is explicit: “Don’t apply pressure to books in order to flatten them for image capture.” It recommends a book cradle for books with weak joints or restricted openings and says form-feed scanning equipment is not acceptable for fragile, high-value, fine-art, special, or archival collection material. - Large Scanning Area: Supports documents up to A3 size (16.5'' × 11.7''). Note: Not recommended for glossy or highly reflective materials
- Fast Scanning Speed: Scan a page in just 1.5 seconds with practiced operation—ideal for high-efficiency, bulk scanning projects
If a book is fragile, damaged, valuable, or hard to open, stop rather than trying to make a consumer scanner work. Ask the holding institution or a qualified conservator how to proceed. For a book in an institution’s collection, follow that institution’s handling and photography rules.

Rules vary by institution and item. At the Library of Congress Rare Book and Special Collections Reading Room, materials are to be consulted in cradles unless staff say otherwise. Photography is allowed only after librarian consultation; permission depends in part on the item’s condition and whether a digitized copy is already available. This gives the Aura the ability to scan and exactly replicate the individual flat pages of curved books.AI technology incorporated in the software makes scanning and image processing smarter and simpler
A Library of Congress case study shows why digitization can require more than choosing a scanner setting. For a vulnerable manuscript, curatorial, conservation, and digital specialists considered the binding’s condition, tested cradle arrangements, changed the page order to reduce handling, and supervised the work. The safe approach was tailored to that manuscript rather than assuming every page should be captured flat. Library of Congress digitization case study
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What equipment should you use?
For a book that can be digitized safely, start with the support and workflow—not a device’s advertised resolution. A book cradle or adjustable cradle blocks can help support a book at its safe opening angle. They are support equipment, not a guarantee that scanning is appropriate for a particular item.

- Fit: The cradle should suit the book’s size, condition, and natural opening angle.
- Capture conditions: The process should avoid pressure and control light and heat exposure.
- Page support: Foldouts and loose or delicate pages should not be forced flat or left unsupported.
- Project needs: Image quality and throughput matter, but they do not override safe handling.
For sustained institutional digitization, an overhead scanner with a V-shaped cradle is one category to consider. Image Access describes its Bookeye 4 V1A as an overhead scanner with an adjustable cradle and a V-shaped cradle intended to hold valuable books. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent confirmation that the machine is suitable for a particular book. Image Access Bookeye 4 V1A product information

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShould you wear gloves to handle an old book?
Not automatically. The Library of Congress says collection material should be handled with clean hands whether or not gloves are worn; gloves can make page turning harder and increase clumsiness. Follow the instructions of the library or collection that owns the item, since its staff may set different requirements for particular materials.
