What is an Atom feed?
Atom is a syndication format for content such as weblog posts and news headlines. It describes both the content and related metadata in XML, so a feed can be distributed to websites or read by user agents. RFC 4287 describes it as “an XML-based Web content and metadata syndication format.” RFC 4287 defines the format.

Atom 1.0 documents are serialized as XML 1.0 and use the namespace http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom and the media type application/atom+xml. They must be well-formed XML. The RFC does not define a DTD or require XML validity in the sense of validation against a schema.

How are Atom feeds and entries organized?
Feed documents
An Atom Feed Document has an atom:feed root. It contains feed-level metadata followed by zero or more atom:entry elements. A feed document is a representation of a feed and may include some or all of the feed’s associated entries.

Entry documents
An Atom Entry Document has an atom:entry root and represents exactly one entry outside a feed. In other words, a feed is a container that can carry multiple entries, while an entry document stands on its own.
The RFC assigns no significance to the order of entries in a feed. Although a processor may retain state and combine feed documents, RFC 4287 does not specify how to reconstruct a continuous feed from separate documents.

Which elements are required?
Both a feed and an entry must contain exactly one atom:id, atom:title, and atom:updated element. The author requirements depend on the document’s context:

- An entry must have an author on the entry itself, in its source element, or inherited from the containing feed.
A feed should include a self link identifying the preferred URI for retrieving feed documents. An entry without atom:content must include an alternate link. An atom:link relates a feed or entry to a web resource and requires an href attribute. The RFC specifies additional conditions for summaries and particular content encodings.

What is the difference between published and updated?
atom:published identifies an instant associated with an event early in an entry’s life cycle. atom:updated identifies the most recent instant at which the publisher considers the entry or feed to have been significantly modified. These timestamps are not interchangeable: an entry can have an original publication time and a later significant modification time.
The publisher should make timestamps as accurate as possible. RFC 4287 cautions against giving several entries published at different times on the same day identical timestamps.

How can Atom be extended?
Atom documents can include extensions, subject to the rules in RFC 4287 for how processors handle them. The format’s extensibility allows additional metadata, but it does not change the required core elements or the distinction between feed and entry documents.
What does RFC 4287 establish—and what does it not?
RFC 4287 is the primary specification for the Atom format. The RFC Editor records that it was updated by RFC 5988, which concerns Web Linking; that reference alone does not establish that the core definition of Atom changed. The specification defines the document structure and processing rules, but it does not establish how widely Atom is used today or which reader applications currently support it.
