Who should buy it at this price?
The Ally X makes the most sense for someone who wants one handheld to cover demanding PC games, Xbox titles, desktop applications and a monitor-based setup. The 24GB memory configuration gives the integrated graphics more headroom than a typical 16GB handheld, while the 80Wh battery is substantially larger than the 60Wh battery in the standard Ally. The replaceable M.2 2280 drive also gives it a longer storage upgrade path than machines that use a less accessible module.
It is harder to justify if your priority is the best-looking screen, the lightest body or a low total cost. The display remains a 500-nit 1080p IPS panel rather than an OLED panel. PC Gamer described the Ally X as one of the fastest handheld gaming PCs it had tested. Its review found that top-end performance differences can be only a handful of frames per second between leading devices, so the processor alone should not determine your choice. Treat those observations as one publication’s testing and judgment, not as a guaranteed frame rate for every game.

Storage: decide between the internal SSD, microSD and the cloud
The included 1TB drive is a standard PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 2280 module. That form factor is the key buying advantage: you can replace the module with a larger compatible M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 SSD instead of replacing the entire handheld. A UHS-II microSD reader provides the lower-friction alternative for a second game library.

Internal expansion is the better long-term answer for a frequently played, install-heavy library. A microSD card is convenient when you want to carry games or move data without opening the chassis. Do not assume a universal game-load-time advantage for one medium without a test of the specific game and card or SSD.

How to plan an internal SSD upgrade
An SSD replacement is a physical repair task, not a software toggle. Before buying a drive, confirm that it is an M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 NVMe model and that its dimensions and thermal solution fit the Ally X. A drive that is electrically compatible can still create a clearance or heat problem if it has an oversized heatsink.

- Record your software state. Note your Microsoft account, game-launcher logins, encryption or recovery keys and any custom control settings before opening the handheld.
- Shut down completely. Disconnect the charger and peripherals. Do not work on the device while it is sleeping or connected to power.
- Use a device-specific teardown procedure. Follow an up-to-date guide for the RC73XA, use the correct screwdriver and keep screws organized. Avoid forcing clips or cables.
- Install the replacement module. Seat the M.2 2280 card fully, secure it as designed and check that no cable is trapped before closing the case.
- Restore the system. Boot from your clone or reinstall Windows, then install ASUS drivers, Windows updates and your game launchers. Confirm that the full capacity is visible in Disk Management before downloading a large library.
Opening the chassis can affect warranty service depending on your region and the nature of the damage. Check ASUS’s local warranty terms before starting. If you do not have a backup plan or are uncomfortable with a teardown, use a qualified repair provider rather than treating the upgrade as a routine software installation.
Using a microSD card well
The reader supports UHS-II microSD media, including SD, SDXC and SDHC standards. Choose a reputable, high-quality UHS-II microSDXC card from a seller with a clear authenticity and return policy. Format it in Windows before moving a large library, and eject it through Windows before removal. Keep a second copy of irreplaceable saves; removable flash storage can fail or become corrupted like any other drive.
Use the internal SSD for games that stream data constantly or that you play every day, and reserve the card for titles you rotate, installers and media. This division keeps the internal drive from filling while avoiding the assumption that every card delivers the same sustained behavior.
Power and battery: buy for your real play pattern
ASUS specifies an 80Wh battery and a 65W USB-C AC adapter rated at 20V/3.25A. The larger battery is a meaningful capacity advantage over the standard Ally’s 60Wh unit, but watt-hours are not a runtime guarantee. A demanding game, high brightness, wireless activity, frame-rate target and performance mode can change consumption substantially.

Check the charger in your regional package
ASUS warns that charger inclusion varies by country, region and model. Inspect the exact local listing and the sealed-box contents before assuming a power brick is included. If you need a spare, select a USB-C Power Delivery charger capable of 65W at the appropriate profile, rather than a phone charger that advertises a lower output. A dock should accept at least 65W input if you want it to charge the handheld while driving peripherals and a display.

For travel, one 65W-or-higher PD charger can serve the Ally X and other USB-C devices, but verify cable ratings and the charger’s multi-port power-sharing behavior. Some multi-port units reduce output when a second device is connected. If the handheld reports slow charging or loses charge during a demanding game, test it directly with a known-good 65W PD supply before blaming the battery.
Set expectations for runtime
There is no single official runtime figure that applies to every game. Compare battery life by workload and power mode instead: a capped frame rate and the 17W preset can stretch play time, while a high-performance profile, maximum brightness and a 120Hz target consume more power. Lowering brightness, disabling radios you are not using and limiting background applications can also help.
Do not interpret the 80Wh rating as permission to ignore charging habits. Keep ventilation clear, avoid storing the handheld fully depleted for long periods and use the supplied or standards-compliant USB-C PD equipment. For a long trip, charge before leaving and carry the spare charger rather than relying on cloud gaming or a low-output power bank.

The Ally X is designed to become a desk PC when you connect the right dock. Its ports are:
- One USB4 Type-C port with DisplayPort 2.1, Power Delivery 3.0 and Thunderbolt 4 compatibility.
- One USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port with DisplayPort and Power Delivery.
- One UHS-II microSD reader supporting SD, SDXC and SDHC.
- One 3.5mm combo audio jack.
A USB-C dock can combine charging, a monitor, keyboard, mouse, Ethernet and external storage into one connection. Before buying, check the dock’s advertised video output and refresh-rate support, USB bandwidth allocation, Ethernet speed, audio behavior and charging passthrough. A dock that provides video but accepts less than 65W may not keep the Ally X charged under load.
A practical desk setup
- Connect the dock’s power input to a 65W-or-higher USB-C PD charger.
- Connect the monitor to the dock using the output that matches your desired resolution and refresh rate.
- Attach keyboard, mouse, network and external storage to the dock, leaving bandwidth for the devices you actually use.
- Connect the dock’s host cable to the Ally X’s USB4 port when you need maximum display and peripheral capability.
- In Windows, select the monitor mode and audio output, then test charging while a game is running.
The second USB-C port remains useful for a direct accessory, but do not assume both ports have identical bandwidth or video capabilities. Check the specifications above when deciding which port should connect to the dock.

Accessories worth budgeting for
Protective case
ASUS lists the ROG Xbox Ally (2-in-1) Premium Case at $69.99 in the US store. A dedicated case is worthwhile if the handheld will travel in a backpack, because the sticks, triggers and screen are exposed to pressure. Confirm that the case fits the Ally X model and leaves room for the charger you plan to carry. If you mostly play at a desk, the case is less urgent than a reliable dock and charger; the bundled stand can remain at home.

USB-C PD charger
Buy this first if your regional bundle omits the adapter or if you split time between home and travel. Look for 65W USB-C PD output and a cable rated for that power. A spare avoids repeatedly unplugging a desk setup and reduces the temptation to use an underpowered phone charger.
Storage expansion
Choose one of two paths: a UHS-II microSDXC card for immediate, removable capacity, or a larger M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD for a permanent library. If you expect to replace the SSD soon, avoid paying for a very large card that will sit unused afterward. If you do not want to open the device, the card is the straightforward choice.
Headphones and input devices
The 3.5mm combo jack supports wired audio without consuming a USB port. Bluetooth 5.4 handles compatible wireless accessories, while a dock lets you use desktop USB peripherals. Decide whether you need low-latency wired audio, wireless convenience or a desk microphone before filling the limited ports with adapters.

The 7-inch 1080p 120Hz IPS display is sharp enough for handheld distances and can show high refresh rates in lighter games. Its 500-nit rating is usable indoors and in many shaded environments, but it does not deliver the contrast and pixel response associated with OLED rivals. If your buying priority is deep blacks, HDR-style contrast or premium movie playback, the display may be the reason to choose another handheld.
At 715g, the Ally X has more mass than compact handhelds. The weight is easier to manage with a supported grip or by resting the device on your lap, but it becomes noticeable in long sessions. Try to evaluate the control layout, stick reach, trigger resistance and grip shape in addition to processor specifications; ergonomics determine whether the extra performance is enjoyable.

Performance also depends on the chosen power profile. PC Gamer praised the 17W preset for balancing speed and efficiency, while observing that frame-generation features can produce visible artifacts in some situations. Use native resolution and a stable frame-rate target when image quality matters, and treat frame generation as a game-by-game option rather than a universal upgrade.
Windows and Xbox software: what changes day to day
The Ally X ships with Windows 11 Home and uses an Xbox button/Game Bar workflow plus an Xbox full-screen interface for the Ally family. The full-screen layer is quicker to navigate with a controller than the desktop, but launchers, driver tools and file management still use normal Windows interfaces. Keep Windows, graphics drivers and ASUS utilities current, and reserve some internal capacity for updates.
Xbox cloud gaming can reduce the number of games you install. Xbox states that cloud support requires a supported device and eligible subscription, and that the catalog and benefits change by region, device, time and Game Pass plan. A game visible in one country or plan may not be available in another. Cloud play also depends on your connection’s latency and data allowance. Keep local installs for offline travel, unreliable networks and games that are not cloud-enabled.
A buying decision framework
Choose the Ally X now when
- You want high-end handheld PC performance and are comfortable with Windows.
- An 80Wh battery and 24GB memory matter more to you than OLED contrast or minimum weight.
- You value the ability to replace the 1TB M.2 2280 SSD later.
- You will use a monitor, keyboard and mouse and can benefit from USB4 and a dock.
Wait, compare or buy a smaller setup when
- Your main requirement is an OLED display or the lightest possible handheld.
- Your games fit comfortably on 1TB and you do not want to perform a hardware upgrade.
- Your budget cannot absorb a charger, case, dock or storage card beyond the $999.99 US starting price.
- You expect console-level simplicity and do not want Windows launcher or driver maintenance.
Calculate the total before ordering
- Start with the local Ally X price and verify whether the 65W charger is in the box.
- Add either a microSDXC card or the larger SSD you realistically need, not both by default.
- Add a dock if you will play at a desk, and confirm that its charger input meets the 65W requirement.

The handheld charges slowly through a dock
Check the dock’s input rating, cable and power-sharing behavior. Connect the 65W-or-higher charger directly to the dock, then test the Ally X under load. If necessary, bypass the dock to isolate the problem.
The SSD upgrade will not boot
Verify that the replacement is an M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive, reseat it with power disconnected and confirm that your clone or Windows installer is valid. If the original drive still works, reinstall it to separate a software image problem from a hardware installation problem.
A microSD card disappears or performs inconsistently
Safely eject it, inspect the card and reader for debris, and test the card in another device. Replace suspicious or counterfeit media. Keep important saves backed up instead of treating the card as archival storage.
