Set up Astro with Svelte, Tailwind CSS, Vercel, Prettier, and TypeScript by adding the integrations that your project actually needs, then configuring formatting and type checks separately. The sequence below uses Astro’s automated integration commands, Tailwind 4, and static Vercel deployment by default; choose the alternate steps if you already use Tailwind 3 or need request-time rendering.
Create an Astro project and add Svelte
Start with a new Astro project using the official setup flow. From the project directory, add the Svelte integration:

npx astro add svelte
Astro’s integration guide recommends this command for npm users; it installs and configures the integration. The documented setup supports rendering and client-side hydration for Svelte 5 components. If your project must use Svelte 3 or 4, the guide directs you to @astrojs/svelte@5 instead. Check the integration guide for the current package and setup requirements: Astro’s Svelte integration guide.

Use Svelte components where interactivity or an existing Svelte component is useful. Astro pages and components can remain Astro files; adding the integration does not require building the whole site in Svelte.

Add Tailwind CSS using the path for your version
Tailwind 4 and Tailwind 3 use different Astro setup paths. Check the installed Tailwind major version before running a command, especially when adding Tailwind to an existing project.
| Tailwind version | Astro setup | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Tailwind 4 | For Astro 5.2.0 and later, run npx astro add tailwind. This sets up the Vite plugin. Import tailwindcss in a CSS file, then import that stylesheet from a page or shared layout. |
Use for a new setup or an existing project already using Tailwind 4. |
| Tailwind 3 | Use tailwindcss@3 with @astrojs/tailwind, including the Tailwind configuration and content globs required by that legacy path. |
Use when the project needs to stay on Tailwind 3; do not mix these instructions with the Tailwind 4 Vite-plugin setup. |
For Tailwind 4, a stylesheet can begin with this import:

/* src/styles/global.css */
@import "tailwindcss";
Import src/styles/global.css from the Astro page or shared layout that should use those styles. Astro’s guide documents both setup routes and their version requirements: Astro styling and Tailwind guide.
Choose static output or on-demand rendering for Vercel
Deploying an Astro site to Vercel does not by itself require an Astro adapter. Astro sites are static by default, and the Vercel deployment guide says static output needs no additional Astro configuration. Choose on-demand rendering only if a route must be generated per request, or if you need a documented Vercel feature that depends on the adapter.
Rank #3
| Rendering choice | Astro configuration | Fits when |
|---|---|---|
| Static build | No Vercel adapter is needed for a static Astro site. | Pages can be generated at build time and do not need request-time personalization or fresh server data. |
| On-demand rendering | Run npx astro add vercel to install and configure the Vercel adapter. |
Routes need request-time rendering or the project uses an adapter-dependent Vercel feature. |
Astro’s Vercel deployment guide explains deployment options, while its on-demand rendering guide covers when an adapter is required. Avoid adding the adapter just because Vercel is the hosting destination.
Configure Prettier for Astro files
Prettier needs prettier-plugin-astro to format .astro files from the command line. Install Prettier and the Astro plugin, then add the plugin and Astro parser to a Prettier configuration:

npm install --save-dev prettier prettier-plugin-astro
// .prettierrc.mjs
export default {
plugins: ["prettier-plugin-astro"],
overrides: [
{
files: "*.astro",
options: { parser: "astro" },
},
],
};
If you also want Prettier to sort Tailwind classes, install prettier-plugin-tailwindcss and put it last in the plugin array. Astro’s editor setup guide documents the plugin configuration and ordering.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Astro supports TypeScript in .ts and .tsx files, Astro component frontmatter, and configuration files. A starter project includes tsconfig.json, which supplies the project’s TypeScript configuration.

Do not treat a successful development server or astro build as proof that types are valid: Astro transpiles those files but does not type-check them. Add an explicit type-check command to the scripts you use for validation. For example, if your project has the relevant dependencies and configuration, a build script can run astro check before the build:
{
"scripts": {
"check": "astro check",
"build": "astro check && astro build"
}
}
Svelte files may need svelte-check for their own type checking. Astro’s TypeScript guide explicitly distinguishes transpilation from type checking and describes using a separate command-line check.
Verify the project before deploying
Once the integrations and configuration are in place, run the checks your project defines. A useful order is to validate types, format the source, and create a production build:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →npm run check— run Astro’s explicit type check.npx prettier --write .— format project files, including Astro files through the configured plugin.npm run build— confirm the production build completes.
Then connect the project to Vercel and deploy it using the appropriate static or on-demand configuration. If a deployment fails, first confirm the Tailwind setup matches its installed major version and that an adapter is present only when the project’s rendering mode or required Vercel feature calls for one.
