The most reliable way to approach the longest runtime is to select Quad-DAC, keep the LCD off while listening and use a compliant USB-C PD3.0 charger.

PD5 battery-life ratings in context
Astell&Kern’s “Up to 28 Hours of Continuous Playback” claim is tied to a specific test setup. The specification uses FLAC files at 16-bit/44.1kHz, volume level 50, Quad-DAC mode and the LCD off. Changing any of those conditions can move your result away from the headline figure.

The PD5 uses a 4,000mAh, 3.8V lithium-polymer battery. Capacity describes the battery’s electrical storage, while playback time depends on how much power the player’s processing, conversion, display and radios draw during use. A larger or smaller music file does not translate into a predictable number of extra or lost hours by itself.

What Hi-Fi’s review gives an independent cross-check: it reports around 28 hours in standard “Quad” mode and around 15 hours with all eight DACs employed. That agreement is useful, but it still does not turn either number into a guaranteed everyday minimum.
Quad-DAC versus Octa-DAC: the main battery decision
Why Quad-DAC lasts longer
Quad-DAC is the mode associated with the PD5’s longest published runtime. It activates fewer conversion channels than Octa-DAC, so the player has less DAC circuitry to power during continuous listening. For flights, commutes, workdays and other long stretches away from a charger, Quad-DAC is the sensible default.
When Octa-DAC is worth the shorter runtime
Octa-DAC activates all eight DACs. It is a deliberate quality and output trade-off: you may prefer it for a focused listening session, demanding headphones or music where you value the additional output and detail, but the available runtime is roughly 13 hours shorter than the Quad-DAC specification. Treat Octa-DAC as a session mode rather than the setting for maximum endurance.
A practical switching rule
Choose Quad-DAC before leaving home, then switch to Octa-DAC when you have a charger nearby or specifically want its presentation. The player’s battery indicator can fall more quickly in Octa-DAC; that is expected behavior, not automatically a battery fault.

How to extend PD5 playback time
- Select Quad-DAC for long listening. Use the PD5’s DAC-mode control to select Quad-DAC before a journey. This is the only mode change for which Astell&Kern publishes a direct runtime comparison.
- Keep the LCD off during playback. The 28-hour test explicitly leaves the LCD off. Start playback, lock or switch off the display using the player’s normal screen control, and wake it only to change an album, check a setting or read a notification. The specification does not state a universal number of hours saved by doing this, so regard it as a way to approach the test condition rather than a guaranteed gain.
- Use a moderate, consistent volume. Volume 50 is part of the manufacturer’s test. Higher listening levels can increase power demand, especially with less-sensitive headphones, but the published material does not provide a correction factor. Set the lowest level that gives you adequate headroom and safe, comfortable listening.
- Prefer local playback when practical. Store music on the PD5 or a microSD card for trips where wireless service is unreliable. Offline playback avoids depending on a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection, although Astell&Kern does not publish a measured battery saving for offline use.
- Disable radios you do not need. Turn off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when they are not part of your session. The PD5 supports both, but no official source quantifies their individual battery penalty; this is sensible power management, not a promised number of extra hours.
- Reduce unnecessary screen activity. Browsing a library, changing digital filters, watching battery statistics and repeatedly waking the display all add active-screen time. Queue your music before the trip and let the player remain locked during playback.
- Plan around Octa-DAC sessions. If Octa-DAC is important to you, begin with a full charge and carry a PD3.0 power source. Do not plan a long, charger-free day around the Quad-DAC figure while leaving Octa-DAC enabled.
Charging the PD5 correctly
Use USB-C PD3.0
Astell&Kern specifies approximately 2.5 hours for a full charge with PD3.0. Use a USB-C charger and cable that support USB Power Delivery 3.0 rather than assuming every USB-C adapter offers the same charging behavior. A USB-C connector alone does not identify the charging protocol.
What the 2.5-hour figure means
The stated time is a charging specification under the PD3.0 method, not a promise that every charger, cable, temperature or battery condition will produce exactly the same result. Charging commonly slows near full capacity as the device protects the cell, so a final percentage can take disproportionately longer than the first part of the charge.
Before a trip
- Connect the PD5 to a known PD3.0-compatible USB-C charger.
- Leave the player connected until its charge indicator shows completion.
- Disconnect only after the full-charge indication appears, then check that the cable is not loose.
- For a high-drain Octa-DAC listening plan, charge immediately before departure rather than relying on a partial top-up from the previous day.
If charging takes substantially longer than the specified approximately 2.5 hours, first test another PD3.0 charger and cable. A non-PD adapter, a cable that cannot negotiate the required mode, simultaneous heavy playback or an aging battery can all make the elapsed time differ. The published specification does not identify a required charger wattage, so do not infer one from the USB-C shape.

The 28-hour test uses FLAC at 16-bit/44.1kHz and volume 50. That gives you a reference point, not a conversion table. High-resolution files, other codecs, replay gain settings, louder output and difficult headphone loads may change consumption, but the available specifications do not say how many minutes each change costs.

Lossless FLAC is not automatically a battery problem, nor is a lower-bitrate file guaranteed to produce a specific saving. Decoding workload, storage access, output level and the rest of the playback chain interact. If you need a dependable travel estimate, run the same album and volume you normally use, note the battery percentage before and after an hour, and use that observation for your own setup rather than applying a universal formula.
Wireless playback and offline storage
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
The PD5 includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capability. Wireless playback can involve radio activity, buffering and a brighter display while you select content. Disable each connection when it is not required, but describe any improvement as an expectation of reduced activity rather than a measured PD5 runtime increase: Astell&Kern does not publish separate Wi-Fi or Bluetooth drain figures.
Internal and removable storage
The player provides 64GB of internal storage and supports one microSD card up to 1.5TB. Loading albums locally lets you listen without maintaining a network connection and gives you a predictable library for travel. The storage ceiling is a convenience limit, not a battery rating; a card’s capacity does not determine playback hours per charge.

A travel-friendly library plan
- Copy the albums you will actually play to internal storage or a compatible microSD card before leaving.
- Keep the player in offline playback when you do not need streaming or wireless control.
- Use a smaller, curated travel library if it reduces browsing and screen wake-ups.
- Test the card in the PD5 before the trip so a filesystem or capacity issue does not force repeated rescans and screen use.

Why your result may be shorter than 28 hours
The screen is active often
The official maximum assumes the LCD is off. Frequent library browsing, album-art viewing and settings changes add display time and may also keep the processor active.

Octa-DAC is enabled
All-eight-DAC operation has its own approximately 15-hour specification. Confirm the selected mode before treating a shorter day of playback as abnormal.
Your music and output conditions differ
The rating uses 16-bit/44.1kHz FLAC and volume 50. Higher-resolution material, another codec, louder listening or a more demanding wired load can produce a different result without indicating a defect.
Wireless features remain connected
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth activity can keep radios and related software busy. Because no official penalty is published, compare your own use with radios off rather than expecting a fixed percentage improvement.

Lithium-polymer capacity declines with age and use, so an older PD5 may no longer match a new unit’s controlled result. The 4,000mAh rating describes the battery specification, not a lifetime guarantee of 4,000mAh available after years of cycles.

A simple one-hour battery check
When you need to know how your personal headphones, files and settings behave, use a repeatable check instead of comparing anecdotes.
- Charge the PD5 fully with a PD3.0-compatible charger.
- Record the selected DAC mode, volume, file type and resolution, screen state and wireless connections.
- Play a continuous album for one hour without changing tracks manually or waking the display.
- Record the remaining battery percentage and repeat on another day if the result looks unusual.
- Keep the same variables when comparing Quad-DAC with Octa-DAC; changing several at once makes the result impossible to attribute.
This test will not produce an official laboratory rating, but it gives you a useful travel estimate for your exact headphones and library. Do not extrapolate a single percentage point into a guaranteed full-day runtime if the battery meter itself updates in steps.
Choosing a setup for different days
Long flight or day away from outlets
Fully charge with PD3.0, select Quad-DAC, queue local music, switch off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth if unnecessary, and leave the LCD off. This combination most closely follows the published long-runtime conditions.

Short critical-listening session
Use Octa-DAC if its additional output and detail are the reason for the session. Keep the display off once playback starts and recharge afterward rather than carrying the approximately 15-hour figure into a multi-day travel plan.
Mixed streaming and local playback
Use wireless only for the albums that require it, then return to local files and disable radios when you are done. Expect the battery result to fall somewhere between your own streaming and offline observations; the specifications do not provide a universal split.
PD5 battery-life checklist
- Quad-DAC selected for maximum endurance.
- LCD off whenever you are not actively controlling playback.
- Volume set no higher than necessary.
- Local albums available on the 64GB internal storage or a microSD card within the documented 1.5TB limit.
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth disabled when not needed.

- Personal one-hour test completed if your trip depends on a precise estimate.
The useful expectation is not a single guaranteed number. It is a range governed by a clear choice: Quad-DAC and an inactive display can approach the approximately 28-hour test result, while Octa-DAC is designed for a shorter, approximately 15-hour session. Match the mode to the day, and treat every other variable as a reason your own result may differ.
