Aruba CEO Dominic Orr used “reverse acquisition” as a metaphor for how the companies’ networking portfolios came together after HPE acquired Aruba—not to suggest the legal deal ran in reverse. In a 2016 interview, he said Aruba took on HP Networking’s wired business and paired it with Aruba’s wireless and software, broadening the customer segments and network spending Aruba could pursue.
Who said it, and when?
Network World published Jon Gold’s interview with Dominic Orr, then Aruba’s president and CEO, on March 9, 2016, following Aruba’s annual Atmosphere conference. The publication described HP’s acquisition of Aruba as a $3 billion deal and reported that Orr was speaking about a year after it.

Orr put the apparent contradiction plainly: “It’s a reverse acquisition, in the sense that HPE acquired Aruba, and Aruba acquired HP Networking.” The key phrase is “in the sense”: he was describing the business and portfolio integration, not the legal ownership transaction. What did Aruba and HP bring together?
Orr’s description focused on complementary parts of an enterprise network. Aruba brought wireless networking and software; HP brought wired infrastructure. Rather than compete only for the wireless portion of a deployment, the combined portfolio could address more of the network.
#1 Best Overall
- GIGABIT ETHERNET PORTS: Features 5 x 1.0Gbps Ethernet ports for high-speed connectivity. Auto-negotiating ports detect the optimal speed for connected devices and work with existing Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cables.
- PLUG-AND-PLAY UNMANAGED NETWORK SWITCH: Simple plug-and-play setup with no software to install or configuration required.
- FLEXIBLE MOUNTING OPTIONS: Compact metal design supports desktop or wall-mount placement for versatile installation.
- SILENT & ENERGY-EFFICIENT OPERATION: Fanless design ensures silent performance, while IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet reduces power consumption without compromising high-speed network performance.
- REGIONAL COMPATIBILITY: Made for use in U.S. & CA only
He described the fit as “the portfolio of HP’s wired infrastructure and Aruba’s wireless plus our software,” calling it “very complimentary” and emphasizing that their market-segment coverage was also strong. The spelling “complimentary” is as it appears in the interview report.
Why did the customer mix matter?
In Network World’s account of the market in 2016, Aruba’s customers leaned toward midtier campus networking deployments. HP traditionally served both very large global companies and small and medium-sized businesses. Orr summed up that segmentation: “Basically it’s a sandwich – they have the biggest accounts [and] the smallest accounts, and we have the middle.”

For Aruba, the combination offered a way to reach across those customer segments and compete for a larger share of each network deployment’s budget—not just wireless, but also wired infrastructure, architecture, and services. Orr described the commercial opportunity this way: “Now, we’ve captured almost the whole dollar. Because of that, we can really afford to have very high-touch customers.” These were his rationale and assessment at the time, not independent evidence of later market performance or a statement about current positioning.

A later Techzine retrospective, published in Dutch in 2018, describes HP/HPE’s own networking portfolio as moving under Aruba and notes that the ProCurve name gave way to Aruba. That offers context for Orr’s metaphor: even though HPE owned Aruba after the acquisition, Aruba became the home for the combined networking portfolio and retained a distinct identity within HPE. That later account is secondary context; Orr’s 2016 interview is the source for his “reverse acquisition” wording and the business rationale he gave for joining the portfolios.
