Based on Pittsburgh’s published 2026 statistics snapshot, Pat Freiermuth is the safer default Steelers tight end: he leads the group in receptions and touchdowns. Darnell Washington is close in receiving yards on fewer catches, so the choice can shift with your league’s scoring and the latest weekly role information. The available snapshot does not establish either player’s target total or share.
What Pittsburgh’s current production shows
The Steelers’ official 2026 statistics snapshot lists these receiving lines for the tight ends:

These are the Steelers’ published figures at the time of the snapshot, not a projection for a particular upcoming week. Freiermuth has the most catches and touchdowns among the listed tight ends. Washington is only six yards behind him despite having five fewer receptions. Tonyan’s displayed receiving production is limited to one catch for two yards. Why targets are the missing piece
Targets help distinguish a player seeing repeatable passing opportunities from one whose catches may reflect a smaller number of chances. The cited team snapshot provides receptions, yards and touchdowns, but not current targets or target shares for these tight ends. Do not treat catches as targets or infer a target rate from these lines. FantasyPros’ tight end target data can help assess opportunity when current weekly figures are available.
Before kickoff, check the latest active status and weekly usage. Pittsburgh lists Freiermuth, Tonyan and Washington as active tight ends and Lake McRee as a reserve tight end on its roster, but roster status alone does not establish who will receive more opportunities in a given game. Choose by your league’s scoring and lineup needs
In point-per-reception formats
Receptions contribute directly to scoring in full- or half-PPR formats. Freiermuth’s current catch advantage is relevant, but it is not a guarantee of future volume. Washington’s lower catch total may matter more if his weekly opportunities change.
In standard formats
Receiving yards and touchdowns carry more of the comparison when catches earn no separate points. The current snapshot still favors Freiermuth in touchdowns, while Washington’s near-equal yardage makes him a consideration rather than an automatic discard.

Check your lineup alternatives
Compare each Steeler with the tight ends available to you, not just with one another. Use your league’s scoring settings and lineup rules, then consult current start/sit advice, rankings or projections as supporting evidence—not as a promise of results. Freiermuth’s completed-season totals were 41 receptions, 486 yards and 4 touchdowns in 2025, and 65 receptions, 653 yards and 7 touchdowns in 2024. Those figures show prior production, but they do not establish his current target share or guarantee a similar role now. Pittsburgh’s 2025 statistics and 2024 statistics provide the season records.

A practical start-or-sit rule
- Start with verified weekly opportunity: look for current targets, route participation or other reliable usage data; do not fill in missing numbers by assumption.
- Compare production: use catches, yards and touchdowns as evidence of what has happened, keeping volume and scoring distinct.
- Apply your scoring: weigh receptions more in PPR, and weigh yards and touchdowns according to your league settings.
- Recheck before kickoff: confirm active status and the latest role information, since roster and statistics pages are snapshots rather than fixed projections.
