Bohemia Interactive defines a dedicated server as a process with no game instance running locally; it handles game information and network synchronisation for remote players. That makes it suitable for a separate Linux or Windows host, but it also means you must handle public UDP networking, configuration errors, updates, logs, and recovery yourself or through an additional management layer.

“Server manager” is not one official Arma Reforger application. It is the operational layer around the dedicated-server executable. At minimum, that layer performs four jobs:
- Downloads the correct server branch with SteamCMD.
- Supplies a case-sensitive JSON configuration and a persistent profile directory.
- Starts the executable with the required arguments.
- Checks that the process remains healthy, restarts it after a crash, and applies updates in a controlled way.
A bare executable can run a small community server, but it does not by itself provide scheduling, crash recovery, multi-instance administration, backups, or a graphical interface. Those capabilities come from scripts, service supervisors, containers, or panels.

Every option still needs the same public networking work. A panel or container cannot compensate for a closed UDP port, an incorrect public address, or a host firewall rule that blocks outside traffic.
Official installation path with SteamCMD
Bohemia Interactive documents two Steam application IDs. Use the stable branch for a production community server and the experimental branch for testing changes before they reach your public instance:

1. Prepare the host
Choose a Linux or Windows machine that can remain online, has enough CPU, memory, and storage for your player count and mod set, and offers a reachable public UDP path. The documentation does not prescribe a universal hardware benchmark, so size the host from your expected population and monitor it after launch rather than relying on a generic minimum.
Install SteamCMD in a dedicated directory. Keep the game files, JSON configuration, profile data, logs, and update scripts in clearly named locations. Do not mix a profile directory with a system-wide SteamCMD installation; separation makes permissions, backups, and rollbacks easier.
2. Download the server files
From a shell, an installation command for the stable branch is:

steamcmd +force_install_dir ./arma-reforger-server +login anonymous +app_update 1874900 +quitReplace 1874900 with 1890870 when you intentionally want the experimental branch. SteamCMD’s anonymous login is the documented method for obtaining the dedicated-server depot.
For repeatable updates, place the commands in a SteamCMD runscript such as update_armar_ds.txt:
force_install_dir ./arma-reforger-server
login anonymous
app_update 1874900
quitRun it with:
steamcmd +runscript update_armar_ds.txtKeep the branch choice recorded in your deployment notes. Accidentally switching an existing public server between stable and experimental can produce incompatible files or mod behavior.
3. Create configuration and profile locations
Create a JSON configuration according to Bohemia Interactive’s server-configuration reference. JSON parameter names are case-sensitive: a spelling or capitalization error can prevent startup or silently produce behavior different from what you intended.

Use a separate profile directory for persistent data and logs. Back up the configuration and profile together because a working server depends on both. Store the JSON and launch scripts in version control, while excluding secrets and large generated logs from the repository.
4. Launch the executable
From the downloaded server directory, launch the executable with the configuration path and an explicit profile path:

./ArmaReforgerServer -config ./server.json -profile ./profileOn Windows, use the equivalent executable and path syntax, for example:
. ArmaReforgerServer.exe -config . server.json -profile . profileKeep the profile path explicit even when you have only one instance. It prevents logs and persistent data from being written to an unexpected working directory when a service manager starts the process.
You can add a conservative -maxFPS value when your host requires a frame-rate ceiling, but choose and validate that value for your own workload; the available documentation does not establish a universal setting.
Make the server reachable from the internet
Internet visibility is a complete path, not a single checkbox. Verify each layer:
- Bind address: the server must listen on the intended local interface.
- Public registration address: the value advertised to the server browser must resolve to the address players can reach.
- Public port: the configured external port must match the one you publish.
- Router forwarding: forward the required game UDP port from the router to the host’s private address.
- Host firewall: allow inbound and outbound UDP for that port and the server process.
- External test: check from a different network, such as a phone hotspot, rather than from the same LAN.
A server that works for a player on the local network can still be invisible to the public browser if forwarding or the host firewall is wrong. Keep the bind and public values distinct in your configuration so a typo cannot make the server advertise an unroutable address.
Management option 1: scripts and a service supervisor
Scripts are the smallest and most transparent manager. A useful startup script should update only when you intend it to, launch with fixed paths, write logs to the profile directory, and return a non-zero status when the process exits unexpectedly. Run that script under the operating system’s service supervisor or scheduled-task system so it starts after reboot and can be restarted.

Separate update and start operations. An update job can run during a maintenance window, stop the server cleanly, execute the SteamCMD runscript, record the result, and then start the new build. A restart loop that immediately relaunches a crashing process can hide a bad JSON file or a failed mod; add a short delay and alerting rather than creating an uncontrolled loop.
Management option 2: Docker
Docker packages the executable and its runtime into a repeatable container. The official container guidance requires exposing the game connection over UDP and mounting persistent server data. Without persistent volumes, recreating a container can discard profiles, logs, or configuration.
Community images for Arma Reforger commonly expose separate mounts for configuration, profile, and workshop data and provide environment variables for values such as public address and game name. Some implement update-on-restart behavior. Read the image’s current documentation before relying on a specific variable or update policy, and pin a known image version for production instead of silently pulling an untested change.
Compose is useful when you run several instances: give each service its own profile and workshop volume, map a unique UDP port, and keep environment files out of public repositories. Container isolation does not remove router forwarding, host-firewall rules, or the need to test visibility from outside the LAN.

LinuxGSM is a community automation route for Linux hosts. The hosting workflow identifies monitoring, automatic crash restart, and scheduled update checks as its strengths. It is a practical middle ground when you want service-style uptime controls without deploying a full web panel.
Because LinuxGSM game scripts and branch handling are maintained outside Bohemia Interactive’s core server documentation, verify the current Arma Reforger script, supported branch, and update behavior before using it for a production community. Keep your JSON and profile backups independent of the automation tool so a script change does not become your only recovery path.
Management option 4: a web administration panel
An open-source Arma Server Manager project documents Docker Compose deployment, SteamCMD access, multi-server administration, mod-directory scanning, configuration handling, and copying .bikey files into server key directories. A panel can replace repeated SSH and shell work with a central interface, especially when several administrators share responsibility.
The convenience has an operational cost. You must secure panel logins, maintain its database or service dependencies, protect API-key or Steam configuration, and understand which host directories are mounted into the panel. Treat the panel as another production application: restrict access, patch it, back up its data, and avoid exposing an administration port directly to the public internet.
Updates, restarts, and a safe operating runbook
- Record the branch: stable uses app ID
1874900; experimental uses1890870. - Back up: copy the JSON configuration, profile directory, mod or workshop data, and current launch scripts before changing files.
- Announce maintenance: warn players before stopping a public instance.
- Stop cleanly: use the service, panel, or container control rather than killing the process during active writes.
- Update: run the SteamCMD script or the manager’s documented update action and capture its exit status.
- Start with fixed paths: launch
ArmaReforgerServerwith-configand-profile. - Check logs: confirm the process remains running, loads the intended configuration, and does not report malformed JSON, permission errors, or missing content.
- Verify externally: confirm the server appears in the browser or accepts a connection from a different network.
- Test changes separately: use an experimental or separate instance for new mods and configuration before changing the public server.
For crash recovery, combine process supervision with an alert. A restart proves only that the executable can start; it does not prove that players can reach it or that the last change was valid.
Mods, workshop content, and key files
As mod counts grow, storage and file ownership become as important as the executable. Keep workshop content persistent when using Docker, and avoid sharing one writable profile between unrelated instances. When a mod requires signing keys, ensure the corresponding .bikey files are copied into the server’s key directory; a panel may automate that copy, while a script-based setup requires you to perform and verify it yourself.
Introduce mods one change at a time on a non-public instance. If the server stops after a mod update, compare the last known-good configuration and workshop state before changing network settings. This prevents a content or JSON error from being misdiagnosed as a port problem.
Troubleshooting by symptom

Security and backup checklist
- Use a dedicated operating-system account with only the permissions the server needs.
- Protect RCON and administrator credentials; never commit them to a public repository or image.
- Restrict panel and API access to trusted networks or a VPN where possible.
- Keep Steam-related secrets and environment files outside shared configuration repositories.
- Back up JSON, profile data, workshop or mod state, key files, and manager metadata on a schedule.
- Test a restore on a separate instance; an untested backup is not a recovery plan.
- Limit mounted host paths in containers so a compromised process cannot write unrelated system files.
Which manager should you use?
Choose SteamCMD plus scripts when you operate one server and value visibility into every command. Choose Docker or Compose when you need reproducible builds, isolated instances, or quick recreation after a host failure. Choose LinuxGSM when automatic monitoring and crash restart matter but a web interface does not. Choose a web panel when several people manage multiple instances, mods, and profiles and the added security and maintenance burden is acceptable.
Start with the official SteamCMD workflow even if you plan to add a manager. Understanding the underlying install directory, JSON file, profile path, executable arguments, and UDP mapping gives you a recovery path when a container, automation script, or panel fails.
