A practical starting block is bot_kick; mp_freezetime 2; mp_round_restart_delay 3; mp_roundtime 60; mp_maxrounds 30; mp_warmup_end 1; mp_overtime_enable 1; mp_restartgame 1. These are adjustable community-example values, not an official Valve preset, and command behavior can change between CS2 builds.
What a CS2 1v1 actually is
CS2 does not provide a separate universal “1v1” game mode. Valve’s game-mode reference lists Competitive as game_type 0, game_mode 1, with a default maximum of 10 players, and Wingman as game_type 0, game_mode 2, with a default maximum of four. Some official Competitive and Wingman maps contain small 1v1 warmup arenas, but those arenas are map features rather than a distinct mode.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That distinction matters because the map and the match configuration determine the experience. A fair duel normally uses a dedicated duel map or a clearly bounded section of a supported map, with one player on each side and no remaining bots. You then tune round timing, restarts and the number of rounds through the server console.

It does not mean selecting a hidden one-versus-one queue. The underlying mode still supplies its normal team, spawn and economy behavior unless you change those rules or choose a map with its own duel logic. This is why a copied command list cannot compensate for an unsuitable map or unequal spawns.

Choose the rules before entering commands
There is no source-backed setting that is best for every duel. Decide whether you want a fast aim session, a longer competitive-style match or a practice round with unusual weapons, then set only the variables that support that goal.
| Setting | Fast casual duel | More deliberate match | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freeze time | 0–2 seconds | A few seconds to choose sides and prepare | The community example uses mp_freezetime 2. |
| Round restart delay | A short pause, such as 3 seconds | A longer pause between rounds | The same example uses mp_round_restart_delay 3. |
| Round time | Long enough to avoid an arbitrary timeout | A limit that fits the map and agreed rules | The example sets mp_roundtime 60; timing interpretation can vary by map or mode, so verify it in your build. |
| Maximum rounds | A finite set for a short session | More rounds for a longer match | The example uses mp_maxrounds 30, but that is not established as an optimal number. |
| Economy and weapons | Default starts for a familiar feel | Agreed starting weapons or money | Use the same rules for both players; exact custom values are not universal recommendations. |
| Map | A duel arena or compact, known area | A map with fair spawns, cover and sightlines | Workshop availability changes, so confirm that the map is currently accessible before scheduling a match. |
For a short evening session, a low freeze time and short restart delay keep downtime under control. For a more formal set, leave enough time for players to buy, communicate and reset mentally. The right choice is the one both players agree to before the first round; changing rules after one player has gained an advantage makes the result difficult to compare.
What you need before setup
- Two CS2 accounts that can join the same private lobby or server.
- A map both players can load. A workshop duel map is an option, but it is not required if a supported map has a suitable area.
- Permission to use the server console. Enable the developer console in CS2’s game settings if it is hidden; menu labels can move after updates.
- An agreed ruleset covering sides, weapons, economy, round count and whether overtime is wanted.
You do not need a dedicated server for a one-off private duel. A dedicated host is useful when the match must remain available independently of the players’ local game sessions, but it adds configuration and maintenance work. No special gaming hardware requirement is established for this setup: the essential requirements are the game, a joinable session, a compatible map and access to the server console.
Local private match versus dedicated host
| Option | Best for | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private lobby or local session | A single duel with friends | Quick to create and does not require separate server administration. | The session depends on the active host and the current lobby setup. |
| Dedicated server | Repeated matches or a session that should stay online | Runs independently of either player’s local match and can load a saved configuration. | Requires current server files, launch parameters, networking and maintenance. |
There is no mandatory purchase attached to the local method. Dedicated hosting is an optional service, so any price, location, uptime or player limit depends on the provider and plan you choose. Do not treat a hosting subscription as necessary for a two-player private match, and verify current terms yourself if you decide to rent one.
Set up a private 1v1 step by step
- Create the session. Open a private lobby or private match and select the intended map. If you use a workshop map, let both players finish downloading it before starting.
- Open the server console. Use the developer-console key configured in your controls. If nothing appears, return to the game settings and enable the console, then rejoin the match.
- Remove bots. Enter
bot_kick. This prevents an unused player slot from affecting the duel. - End warmup. Enter
mp_warmup_end 1after both players are present. If the map has its own warmup logic, allow it to finish or verify the result in the first live round. - Apply timing and round rules. Enter the commands in the block below. You can omit any line you do not want, but keep the rules symmetrical for both players.
- Restart the match. Use
mp_restartgame 1so the new round settings are read from the beginning of a match rather than halfway through an existing round. - Verify the result. Confirm that exactly two players spawn on opposing sides, bots are gone, the freeze period matches your choice, and the round ends or restarts as intended.
Apply the commands only after the intended map is fully loaded. If you paste the block during a transition, some lines may affect the old map or be overwritten by the next map initialization. When troubleshooting, enter one command at a time and watch the console for an error; this makes it clear whether the problem is a syntax issue, a mode restriction or a map script.

This sequence is adapted from a Steam Community guide updated October 4, 2023. Treat it as a starting point rather than a Valve standard. If a command is rejected or behaves differently in your current build, remove it and test the remaining settings individually.
What each command changes
| Command | Purpose | Practical use in a 1v1 |
|---|---|---|
bot_kick |
Removes bots from the current session. | Run it after loading the map and again only if a map script adds bots back. |
mp_freezetime 2 |
Sets the freeze period at the start of a round. | Two seconds is enough to orient without making the duel wait. Set it lower for instant starts or higher when players need to choose equipment. |
mp_round_restart_delay 3 |
Controls the pause before the next round begins. | Three seconds gives a quick reset while still showing the previous result. |
mp_roundtime 60 |
Sets a round-time value. | The example’s value is intentionally generous for a compact duel, but confirm how your selected map and mode interpret it. |
mp_maxrounds 30 |
Sets a finite maximum-round target. | Thirty rounds creates a longer session; lower it for a quick set and raise it only when both players want a longer match. |
mp_warmup_end 1 |
Ends the current warmup. | Use it after players and the map are ready. It does not replace a match restart. |
mp_overtime_enable 1 |
Enables the mode’s overtime behavior when applicable. | Keep it only if both players agree to overtime and the selected mode handles it as expected. |
mp_restartgame 1 |
Restarts the match after a short delay. | Run it last, after all other round variables have been entered. |
The order is useful: remove players that should not be present, finish warmup, set the rules, then restart once. Repeating the restart after every individual line creates unnecessary interruptions and can make a map script reinitialize more often than expected.

Map selection and fairness
Map choice has more impact on a 1v1 than copying a long command list. A compact duel map can produce frequent engagements, while a full-size bomb-site map may leave players searching for each other. Pick a layout that gives both sides comparable spawn protection, cover and sightlines.
Before accepting a map, walk or spectate both starting areas. Check that one side does not have a faster route to the only useful cover, an uncontested elevated angle or a boundary that traps the other player. Also confirm that the play area is clear enough to identify the opponent; a full map with multiple unused rooms can turn a timed round into a search exercise.
Workshop maps
A workshop map can provide purpose-built spawns and boundaries. Workshop availability and compatibility can change, so do not promise a particular map without checking that it loads in the current CS2 build. Have both players subscribe or download it before the lobby starts, and keep a fallback supported map available.
Both players should use the same map version. If one client is still downloading or reports a missing asset, stop before applying the rules; otherwise the players may see different geometry or fail to connect. A fallback official map is useful when a workshop item is removed, unpublished or incompatible after an update.

Official maps and warmup arenas
Some official Competitive and Wingman maps include 1v1 warmup arenas. Those arenas do not activate a separate 1v1 ruleset; the map is still running under its underlying mode. If the arena has unusual spawn, weapon or boundary logic, test one complete round before treating it as your regular duel space.
Economy, weapons and side rules
The command block deliberately leaves money and weapon commands alone. That keeps the duel close to familiar CS2 behavior and avoids turning a community example into an unsupported universal preset. Before the first round, agree on whether players use the normal buy system, a fixed starting weapon, or a repeated weapon such as a pistol or rifle.
- Default competitive feel: leave economy and buy rules at the map’s normal values, then use the same side and weapon restrictions for both players.
- Aim practice: agree on one weapon class and restart whenever the map’s economy would otherwise create an advantage.
- Mixed practice: change only one rule at a time so players know whether a different result came from the weapon, money or map.
Decide whether sides switch during the set. If they do, record the score at the switch so both players receive the same number of rounds on each side. If they do not, describe the session as a one-sided practice set rather than a balanced match. The console block does not make that decision for you.

Saving settings for repeated matches
Typing commands every time is acceptable for a single session. For repeated local launches, Valve’s game-mode documentation describes mode-specific server configuration files that execute when a map loads. It also explains that game_type and game_mode influence the next map initialization and which mode configuration files run.
The exact file location and naming depend on whether you are launching a local game or operating a dedicated server, so confirm the current CS2 directory structure before creating files. Put only the settings you understand in a mode-specific configuration, then launch the map and verify that the file actually executed. A saved file does not remove the need to check map compatibility after a game update.
Keep a plain-text copy of the commands outside the game as well. Label it with the map, intended mode and date you last confirmed it. When a patch changes behavior, you can disable one line at a time instead of deleting the whole configuration. Avoid placing practice-only commands in a file that is also used for normal private matches.
When a dedicated server makes sense
A dedicated server is optional for a one-off duel. Its advantage is persistence: the match can stay available without one player hosting an active local session. Valve’s general Source Dedicated Server reference describes command-line arguments such as +map to choose the starting map, +<console variable> <arg> to set a variable at launch, and +sv_lan 1 to restrict availability to a LAN.

Server binaries, configuration paths, authentication and internet exposure are CS2-specific and can change. Use the current server documentation for your build, test the launch on a private network first, and never expose an unmanaged server to the internet merely to run a two-player match.
For a hosted server, the practical checklist is different from a local lobby: confirm the server build, map download path, configuration-file location, join permissions and whether LAN mode is disabled when an internet connection is required. There is no verified universal hardware specification or fixed hosting price for this topic, so treat provider claims as product-specific rather than requirements for CS2 1v1 play.

The console does not open
Enable the developer console in the game settings, confirm the assigned key in controls, and return to the active match. Keyboard layouts can change the key position, so bind the console to a key you can identify reliably.
Bots return after being kicked
Some maps or mode scripts add bots during warmup or after a restart. Run bot_kick after the map has finished loading and again after mp_restartgame 1. If bots continue returning, the map’s own script is overriding the session and a different map may be required.
The match still behaves like a full team mode
Remember that Competitive and Wingman are underlying modes, not dedicated 1v1 modes. Check the map, remove bots, confirm both players are on opposite sides, and inspect the first live round. A map’s 1v1 arena feature cannot be converted into a universal mode by a single console command.
Round timing looks wrong
Re-enter the timing commands one at a time, then run mp_restartgame 1. If mp_roundtime 60 produces an unexpected duration, test a smaller value and check the selected map and mode’s interpretation rather than assuming the command is broken.
Players cannot join the session
Confirm that the lobby is private but joinable by the invited account, that both players have the same workshop map installed, and that a LAN-only setting such as sv_lan 1 has not been enabled unintentionally. A dedicated server also needs the current CS2 networking and authentication configuration.
One player has an obvious spawn advantage
Stop the set and inspect both starting locations instead of trying to correct the imbalance with timing commands. Move to a different bounded area or choose another map. The console block controls match flow; it does not guarantee equal sightlines, cover or travel distance.
Best Value
Overtime never starts
mp_overtime_enable 1 enables overtime behavior only where the active mode supports it. Check the round target and mode rules, and agree in advance whether a finite 1v1 set should simply end at the maximum round instead.
A workshop map will not load
Have both players verify the subscription or download completed, then restart the lobby with the same map selected. If the item is unavailable or incompatible, use the agreed fallback supported map rather than adding unverified commands.
Final pre-match checklist
- Both players loaded the same map and agreed on sides.
- The console is available and the intended commands were accepted.
bot_kickremoved every bot.- Warmup ended only after both players were ready.
- Freeze time, restart delay, round time and maximum rounds match the agreed rules.
- Overtime is either enabled intentionally or left out intentionally.
mp_restartgame 1was run after the settings were applied.- The first live round confirms opposing spawns, fair boundaries and the expected timer.
The reliable method is therefore simple: treat the map as the arena, treat the console variables as adjustable match rules, and verify the live result instead of assuming a copied preset is universal. Start with the community example, remove anything that does not fit your duel, and update the setup when your CS2 build or map changes.

Does CS2 have a separate 1v1 mode?
No. Valve documents Competitive and Wingman as the underlying modes; 1v1 warmup arenas are map features. Choose the map and configure the private match.
Which settings should I use for a quick duel?
Start with bot_kick, mp_freezetime 2, mp_round_restart_delay 3, mp_roundtime 60, mp_maxrounds 30, mp_warmup_end 1, optional overtime, and mp_restartgame 1. Adjust them to the session instead of treating the values as universal.
Do I need a dedicated server?
No for a one-off private match. Use one only when you want the duel to remain available independently of the players’ local sessions.
Can I save these settings?
Yes. Valve’s game-mode documentation describes mode-specific server configuration files that run when a map loads. File names and locations depend on the local or dedicated setup, so verify them in your current CS2 build.
Why do bots come back after I remove them?
A map or mode script may add them during warmup or after a restart. Run bot_kick after loading and again after the restart; if they persist, choose a map without that script.
What should I do if the timer is wrong?
Re-enter the timing commands individually, restart the match, and check how the selected map and underlying mode interpret mp_roundtime. Do not assume every map handles the value identically.
The Bottom Line
For most private CS2 1v1s, load a fair map, kick bots, end warmup, apply the timing block, restart once and verify the first live round. The values are a practical starting point, not an official preset; adjust them when your map, mode or current CS2 build behaves differently.
