Space Engineers 2 Server Requirements in 2026: What Is Actually Supported

Keen has published Space Engineers 2 client requirements, but no dedicated-server specifications. Here is the current co-op roadmap, the SE1 version trap, and what to verify before buying hardware or hosting.

Space Engineers 2 does not yet have published dedicated-server requirements. Keen Software House’s current roadmap puts the first multiplayer milestone—four-player co-op with one player hosting—in the planned November/December 2026 VS4 window. Keen explicitly says that milestone is not full-scale multiplayer or dedicated-server support. Until Keen publishes SE2 server software and specifications, the game’s client requirements and the original Space Engineers server guide cannot be used to size an SE2 server.

The short answer for SE2 server requirements

If you are searching for a CPU, RAM, operating-system or bandwidth specification for a permanent Space Engineers 2 (SE2) server, no authoritative specification is available in the current Keen documentation. The published SE2 hardware table describes a player’s Windows PC: it includes a graphics card, a 60-FPS target and storage for the game client. Those figures do not establish what an eventual dedicated server will need.

SE2’s first planned multiplayer step is limited player-hosted co-op for four people. Keen’s roadmap describes this as “player hosting only” and says it is “not full large-scale multiplayer or dedicated servers yet.” The November/December 2026 date is a roadmap target for the VS4 co-op milestone, not a confirmed dedicated-server launch date.

Dedicated-server status in 2026

What Keen has announced

Keen has placed “VS4: Coop Multiplayer & NPCs” ahead of the water milestone on its SE2 roadmap. The stated plan starts with four-player cooperative play in which one player hosts the world. A later phase is intended to add dedicated servers, but the reviewed update does not provide a release date, downloadable server package, supported operating systems or hardware limits.

Stellar Factory Spaceteam Cooperative Card Game, 3-6 Players, Ages 12+
  • 5-MINUTE ROUNDS. Fast enough for a party warm-up or a quick break; intense enough that you'll immediately want to play again.
  • COOPERATIVE CHAOS. Everyone shouts simultaneously to trade tools and fix the spaceship before time runs out. Nobody's a bystander.
  • WATERPROOF PLASTIC CARDS. 100% plastic construction is tear-resistant and spill-proof. survives the chaotic table conditions this game creates.
  • ADJUSTABLE DIFFICULTY. From relaxed casual mode to full-speed expert, difficulty scales to your group's energy level.
  • 3–6 PLAYERS | AGES 12+ | GREAT ICE BREAKER. Perfect opener for game nights, team-building events, and family gatherings.

The staged approach reflects work that must be completed before a broader server product can be reliable. Keen lists shared worlds, contracts, progression, rewards, GPS markers, respawning and disconnect handling among the multiplayer systems being addressed. These are game-system dependencies, not server specifications, but they explain why SE1’s existing server instructions should not be assumed to work for SE2.

What has not been announced

  • No SE2 dedicated-server executable or installation procedure is documented.
  • No minimum or recommended server CPU, core count, clock speed or architecture is stated.
  • No SE2 server RAM baseline, storage allocation, bandwidth figure or player-capacity table is published.
  • No official Linux binary, Windows service package, container image or hosting-provider compatibility list is established.
  • No dedicated-server release date is confirmed; the VS4 date applies to the planned co-op milestone.

SE2 client requirements are not server requirements

Keen’s support page gives the following profiles for running the SE2 client. The game is an Early Access Alpha, and Keen says the relatively high requirements reflect advanced rendering, enhanced physics simulation and a more detailed grid system. Optimization is still expected to continue.

Operating system and API Windows 10 and DirectX 12 Windows 10 and DirectX 12
Target shown by the support page 60 FPS at medium settings 60 FPS at high settings

These numbers tell you whether a player’s computer can render and simulate the client at the stated settings. They do not show how much memory a headless server process will consume, whether a server will use a GPU, or how CPU demand will scale with players, world complexity and modifications. In particular, do not turn the 16 GB client figure into an “SE2 server minimum,” and do not buy a dedicated graphics card for a server solely because the client table lists one.

Can you host Space Engineers 2 now?

Player-hosted co-op

The roadmap’s first multiplayer implementation is designed around a player hosting a four-person co-op session. That is different from renting or operating a persistent dedicated server. The host’s PC runs the game client and the hosted simulation together, so its practical needs will depend on the client requirements, the host’s world and the other players’ connections. Keen has not published a separate host-performance table.

Because the feature is a planned milestone rather than a released dedicated-server product, availability can change as development proceeds. Check the current in-game build notes and Keen’s latest roadmap entry when the multiplayer update arrives rather than relying on an older announcement.

What a host should prepare

  • Use a Windows 10 system that meets the published SE2 client profile, with an SSD and current DirectX 12 support.
  • Leave additional disk headroom beyond the approximately 40 GB client footprint for updates, saves and temporary files.
  • Prefer a wired network connection for the player acting as host, especially when the world contains large or highly active grids.
  • Keep the host machine free of heavy background workloads; the same CPU and memory are serving the local client and the hosted simulation.
  • Back up world saves manually until Keen documents an official dedicated-server migration and backup workflow.

These are sensible client-hosting practices, not official SE2 server requirements. They should not be read as a guaranteed player limit, latency target or performance promise.

Linux support: what is known

A Keen support-portal discussion requests Linux dedicated-server binaries for SE2. It is a user support topic, not a product announcement or technical specification. It does not confirm that Linux binaries exist, that a Windows build runs correctly under a compatibility layer, or that a hosting provider can deploy SE2 on Linux.

Until Keen publishes a supported server package and operating-system list, treat Linux dedicated hosting as unconfirmed. Do not commit to a Linux virtual machine, container image or control panel on the assumption that the original game’s server tools will transfer. If Linux is a hard requirement, wait for an explicit SE2 statement identifying the binary, supported distribution or runtime and update method.

The original Space Engineers guide is a version trap

Keen does publish dedicated-server instructions for the original Space Engineers. Those instructions are useful for understanding what a mature server product might document, but every specification belongs to SE1, not SE2.

SE1 guide item Published SE1 figure or instruction Why it cannot size an SE2 server
Minimum CPU 3.2 GHz with 3 logical cores SE2’s engine, physics and grid systems may have different workloads.
Recommended CPU 4.5 GHz with 3 logical cores No SE2 benchmark or equivalent recommendation has been published.
Minimum memory 6 GB RAM This is an SE1 value and is not an SE2 baseline.
Recommended memory 10 GB RAM World size, simulation behavior and server code can differ between versions.
Bandwidth listed 5 Mbps No SE2 bandwidth requirement or player-capacity context is stated.
Networking Static IP guidance and UDP port 27016 as the default listen port SE2’s ports and networking model have not been documented.
Software setup Windows prerequisites, Steam Library Tools or SteamCMD, and service/foreground options SE2 may use different binaries, prerequisites and deployment steps.

Using those SE1 numbers to order an SE2 machine creates false precision. A six-gigabyte server may be adequate for one game and unusable for another; the table does not predict SE2 behavior. Likewise, the SE1 default port is not an SE2 port until Keen says so.

What to compare when SE2 dedicated servers arrive

Once official software and provider listings exist, evaluate them against the workload you actually intend to run. A price or advertised player count is not enough to establish suitability.

Decision area Questions to verify
Hosting model Is it four-player player hosting, a self-managed dedicated process or a managed rented server?
Compatibility Does the provider explicitly support SE2, the current game build, required platforms and any cross-play limits?
Capacity What official player limit, CPU allocation, memory allocation, world-size guidance and simulation-performance expectations are documented?
Operations Are backups, scheduled restarts, update controls, administrator tools, monitoring and support included?
Network What bandwidth, latency, public-address, firewall and port-forwarding conditions apply?
Data and cost Can saves be exported, moved to another host or returned to self-hosting, and what recurring charges apply?

Require the provider to name SE2 specifically. A listing for the original Space Engineers, even from a company that hosts that game, is not evidence of SE2 support. Also verify whether the advertised capacity assumes an empty world, unmodified gameplay or a particular simulation load.

A safe buying and setup checklist

  1. Identify the mode you need. If four-person co-op is sufficient, wait for the player-hosted milestone. If you need a persistent world, moderation tools or a larger community, you need a later dedicated-server release.
  2. Check Keen’s current announcement. Confirm that dedicated-server software, not merely co-op, has been released and read the supported-platform notes for that build.
  3. Use only SE2-specific numbers. Look for official CPU, memory, storage, bandwidth and player-capacity guidance. Do not substitute the SE1 table or the SE2 client GPU row.
  4. Validate the operating system. Confirm whether Windows, Linux or another platform is officially supported before purchasing a machine or hosting plan.
  5. Plan for the real workload. Account for simultaneous players, world size, active grids, mods, save backups, update staging and monitoring rather than sizing only to the base installation.
  6. Test before committing. Run the intended world and player count during a cancellation or trial period, measure simulation performance and verify that backups can be restored.
  7. Keep a migration path. Export saves and document configuration so you can move between a home server and a managed host when requirements or prices change.

What not to buy yet

There is no evidence-based SE2 server parts list to recommend in 2026. A consumer graphics card is justified by the client table only when a machine must render the game locally; it does not establish a dedicated-server GPU requirement. Likewise, buying a specific RAM kit, processor or recurring hosting plan as “SE2-ready” before Keen publishes server specifications is speculation.

The prudent choice is to meet the client requirements only if you intend to play or host the planned co-op mode, keep your world data portable, and postpone dedicated-server spending until official software, platform support and workload guidance are available.

Bottom line for 2026

Space Engineers 2 has published client requirements but not dedicated-server requirements. The near-term multiplayer plan is four-player, player-hosted co-op, with the roadmap targeting November/December 2026 for that milestone. Dedicated servers are described as a later feature. SE1’s CPU, RAM, bandwidth, port and Windows instructions remain valid only for the original game. Wait for an SE2-specific server release and documentation before choosing hardware, Linux deployment or a hosting provider.
