Arm vs. x86 Processors: Architecture, Compatibility, and Performance

Arm and x86 do not have a universal performance winner. Learn what the architecture labels mean, how Windows 11 on Arm runs apps, and which drivers and games to verify before buying.

Arm and x86 are processor architectures, not individual CPU models—and neither is automatically faster. The practical difference depends on the specific computer, the software it runs, and whether that software and its hardware drivers work natively or through emulation. For a Windows laptop, check your essential apps, peripherals, and games before choosing; then compare complete systems on the tasks you actually do.

What are Arm and x86?

Arm and x86 describe instruction-set architectures (ISAs): the instructions and system behavior that software expects a processor to provide. Arm describes its CPU architecture as RISC; x86 and x64 are another architecture family widely used in Windows PCs. Those labels identify different software-facing contracts, not a complete description of a processor’s speed or efficiency.

It helps to separate the architecture from the microarchitecture. The ISA is the instruction vocabulary and contract; the microarchitecture is the particular processor design that carries out those instructions. Arm says different companies implement its architecture with different power, performance, and area targets. Pipeline design and cache are among the implementation choices that can vary. Arm’s CPU architecture overview explains the distinction.

Arm also says more than 350 billion chips using its architecture have shipped. Its page presents this as a cumulative figure without stating the figure’s publication year, so it should not be read as an annual total. Arm CPU architecture

Will existing software run on an Arm processor?

There is no single answer for every Arm device. Compatibility depends on the operating system, the software build, any translation or emulation it provides, and the drivers required by the hardware. Microsoft’s x86 and x64 emulation information below applies to Windows on Arm; it should not be generalized to every operating system or Arm device.

Windows 11 on Arm: native apps and emulation

Windows 11 on Arm can run apps built for Arm natively, as well as many unmodified x86 and x64 apps through emulation. Microsoft says Arm-native apps offer the best performance and battery life. Its Windows on Arm overview describes native apps, emulation, and Arm64EC, a development approach that can help teams migrate code incrementally while retaining some x64 code and libraries.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 Arm-based PCs FAQ says most Windows apps can be installed and run. It also identifies Prism in Windows 11 version 24H2 as an improvement to emulated-app performance. That version-specific feature does not guarantee that every app will work or perform identically on every Arm PC.

App availability changes, so check Microsoft’s current compatibility information and the software publisher’s support page for the exact app, plug-ins, and features you need. A native Arm version is preferable when available; an app that works in emulation may have different performance or feature behavior from a native build.

Drivers, games, and peripherals

App emulation does not create a missing hardware driver. Windows on Arm needs the required drivers to be built into Windows or supplied for Arm64. Microsoft’s FAQ flags games that depend on anti-cheat drivers not designed for Arm PCs, as well as certain driver-dependent utilities. Before buying, check with the device maker for Arm64 driver support and with the game publisher for support on the particular Windows-on-Arm setup.

Microsoft says Windows 11 on Arm supports most printers, including printers using Mopria, but recommends checking with the manufacturer when a printer or other peripheral needs its own driver. Treat docks, specialist devices, security products, and other driver-dependent accessories the same way: verify the specific model rather than assuming that an app’s compatibility guarantees the attached hardware will work.

Does Arm or x86 deliver better performance?

Architecture alone does not establish a performance winner. Arm implementations can target different power, performance, and area trade-offs, and x86 processors also appear in different designs and systems. The available evidence here does not provide a current, matched benchmark ranking of contemporary Arm and x86 processors, so a universal speed or efficiency claim—or a numeric comparison—would not be supported.

For a useful comparison, name the processor and the complete computer, then measure the workloads that matter. A result can change depending on whether an app runs natively or through emulation, whether the test is single-core or multi-core, and whether it measures a short burst or sustained work. Laptop cooling, power limits, memory configuration, and battery testing matter too. For games, the GPU, drivers, and game compatibility are part of the outcome; an ISA label by itself cannot predict the experience.

How to compare specific Arm and x86 computers

Use the same practical questions for each candidate system rather than trying to infer the result from its architecture label.

  • Identify the full configuration: record the exact processor, computer model, memory configuration, and operating system.
  • Check essential software: confirm native Arm builds or emulation support for your apps, plug-ins, developer tools, and virtualization needs with the software publisher.
  • Verify devices and drivers: check Arm64 driver availability for required printers, docks, security software, and specialist hardware.
  • Compare like-for-like workload results: look for independent tests that state the task, benchmark version, power mode, test duration, and whether the software was native or emulated.
  • Assess sustained performance and battery life: use measurements for the actual computer, not assumptions based on ISA.
  • Check games individually: confirm support for the game and any anti-cheat component with its publisher or a current compatibility resource.

What to check before buying a Windows-on-Arm laptop

  1. List what must work. Include work apps, plug-ins, games, printers, docks, security products, and any specialist devices.
  2. Check each app’s status. Ask the publisher whether it offers a native Arm version or supports running the app through Windows emulation. Verify important features, not just whether the installer launches.
  3. Check every required driver. Confirm that Windows includes the driver or that the manufacturer provides an Arm64 version for your exact device.
  4. Compare whole computers for your workload. Use independent performance and battery tests for the models and configurations you are considering, and confirm whether the tested software ran natively or under emulation.

Arm-based Snapdragon X laptops are one category of Windows-on-Arm PCs, but the architecture alone does not establish that a particular model is better than an x86 alternative. The right choice depends on the compatibility checks and system-level comparisons above.
