When an ARK: Survival Evolved server will not start, cannot be found, or crashes under load, isolate the failure in this order: check the server log, remove incompatible mods, confirm the save and update completed, verify UDP ports, then test a direct connection. This guide covers dedicated servers for Survival Evolved; Survival Ascended uses different launch syntax.

Start with the symptom, not a reinstall
Most ARK server failures fall into four groups: the process stops during startup, the server is running but absent from the browser, players see a timeout or cannot join, or the server lags and crashes after it has been online. A fifth issue, Steam’s “App ID specified by server is invalid” message, can occur even when the installation itself is healthy.

Work through the least destructive checks first. Capture the server console output, inspect ShooterGame/Saved/Logs, note the last change you made, and stop changing several variables at once. A mod update, a game patch, a damaged save, and a blocked query port can produce similar symptoms but require different fixes.
The guidance below is community-sourced and reflects information available on October 14, 2026. Port defaults, Steam behavior, and mod compatibility can change with updates, so compare the settings with the current ARK Community Wiki and your server host’s documentation before making firewall changes.

ARK server won’t start
If the process exits, hangs during world loading, or repeatedly returns to the command prompt, begin with the log rather than deleting the installation. On many rented hosts, the log directory is exposed through the control panel or FTP. On a self-hosted installation, open the server folder and read the newest files under ShooterGame/Saved/Logs. Look for the first error before the shutdown; later messages are often consequences.
Remove incompatible mods methodically
Mods are the most common first suspect after a game update. A mod compiled for an older build can prevent the world from loading, fail while registering an item, or crash the process before the server advertises itself.

- Temporarily remove or disable every nonessential mod.
- Start a clean test. If it starts, re-enable mods one at a time, restarting between each change.
- When the failure returns, update or remove the last mod enabled. Check its compatibility with the current ARK build rather than assuming an older version will work.
- Restore the known-good list and keep the failing mod isolated until its author publishes a compatible version.
Do not delete the only copy of a mod or save while diagnosing. Keep a backup so that a test does not become an irreversible data loss.
Test for a broken save
A save can become unloadable when a mod that created an item, structure, or creature is removed. If the server worked until a mod was uninstalled, restore that mod first and test the original world. If the save then loads, remove the mod only after cleaning up objects that depend on it, using a backup and the mod’s documented migration procedure.
To distinguish a save problem from a general installation problem, create a temporary test world with the same server settings but no custom content. A clean world that starts points to the original save or its dependencies; a clean world that also fails points toward files, an update, ports, or the launch configuration.
Finish the update before starting the process
After a major patch, SteamCMD can still be downloading or validating files when a host panel attempts to launch the server. Stop the process, let the update finish, and start it once more. If the console appears to stall during initial loading, one additional restart can clear a transient initialization failure; repeated restarts without reading the log will not repair a bad mod or save.

Use the log to choose the next action
- Mod or class registration errors: disable the named mod and retest.
- Missing package or checksum errors: update or validate the server files.
- Save deserialization or missing asset errors: restore the implicated mod or a known-good backup.
- Port bind errors: find the other process using the port, then stop it or assign a free port consistently in the launch parameters, firewall, and router.
Verify the dedicated-server files with SteamCMD
A reinstall is appropriate when validation reports missing or corrupt files, an update was interrupted, or the installation fails even with no mods and a fresh test world. The dedicated server uses Steam application ID 376030.
- Stop the ARK server.
- Open SteamCMD in the directory where you manage dedicated-server files.
- Run an anonymous login and update/validate command such as:
steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 376030 validate +quit - Wait for SteamCMD to report completion before launching the server.
- Start the server without mods first. Add custom content only after the unmodified installation is stable.
Use a backup of ShooterGame/Saved before replacing files. Validation repairs the installation but does not make a broken save or incompatible mod safe.
The server is running but missing from the browser
A server that does not appear in the in-game list is not necessarily offline. Browser filters, version mismatches, slow master-list propagation, and an inaccessible query port are frequent causes.
Clear the browser filters
ARK advertises servers with an administrator password as password-protected. If the browser option that hides password-protected servers is enabled, your server can disappear even though it is healthy. Turn that filter off, select the correct session type and map, remove restrictive name filters, and refresh the list.

The joining client and dedicated server must run the same game version. Update both sides, fully exit and restart Steam, then restart the server after the update completes. A client that has updated while the server remains on the previous build may see no server or may fail at the join stage.
Allow time for Steam’s master list
A newly started server can take several minutes to appear in the Steam list. Keep the process running while you test, and avoid changing its name, ports, and configuration simultaneously; each change makes it harder to tell whether the delay or the setting caused the result.

Bypass the list with a direct connection
Direct connection tests the game endpoint without waiting for browser indexing. In ARK, open the in-game console and use:
open IP_ADDRESS:7777Replace IP_ADDRESS with the server’s reachable public address and use the configured game port if it is not 7777. If direct connection works while the browser does not, investigate query-port forwarding and filters rather than the game service itself.

Players cannot connect: ports, firewall, and network checks
For a standard ARK: Survival Evolved dedicated server, the game and query endpoints are separate. Forward and allow the ports that your launch configuration actually uses.

Searching by IP relies on the query port for discovery, while joining game traffic uses the game port. Do not assume that opening only one endpoint proves the whole server is reachable.
Forward the ports to the correct machine
- Give the server computer a reserved local address in the router’s DHCP settings.
- Create forwarding rules for UDP 7777, UDP 7778, and UDP 27015 to that address. Add TCP 27020 only if you intentionally use RCON.
- Allow the same services through the operating-system firewall and any security suite.
- Restart the server and test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot, rather than from inside the same LAN.
Some community forum reports say a connection began working after forwarding UDP only instead of both TCP and UDP. That is anecdotal, but it is a useful test when an over-broad rule behaves unexpectedly. Older advice to disable port forwarding conflicts with current dedicated-server practice; verify the result on your own router and network.
Check for port conflicts
Only one process can listen on a given local port. Stop duplicate ARK instances, other game servers, and stale processes before starting the intended server. If you change a port, change it in the launch arguments, firewall rule, router rule, and the address players use.

Keep the query port out of Steam’s commonly used range
The ARK Community Wiki guidance warns against placing the query port in the 27020–27050 range because Steam uses those ports. Use a distinct query port and document it for browser and direct-connect troubleshooting.
Use the right syntax for the right ARK game
This article covers ARK: Survival Evolved. Do not copy launch examples for ARK: Survival Ascended without checking the edition. Ascended uses -port=<port> syntax; Survival Evolved commonly uses its established launch parameters and defaults to game port 7777 when no alternate port is specified. Mixing the two syntaxes can leave a server listening on an unexpected port or not starting at all.
“ARK server not responding” after a direct-connect attempt
First determine whether the process is listening locally. If the server console is still loading, wait for the world to finish initializing; a browser timeout during startup does not prove a network failure. If it is ready, check the game-port rule, the peer port, the host firewall, and whether the address is the public address rather than a private LAN address.
- Test from outside the hosting network to avoid a router’s unsupported hairpin connection.
- Use the configured game port after the colon in
open IP_ADDRESS:PORT. - Ask one player on another internet connection to test while you monitor the console.
- If outside players fail but local players succeed, focus on NAT, forwarding, firewall, or an upstream provider block.
- If everyone fails after a patch, compare client and server versions and complete validation before changing network settings.
Lag, rubber-banding, and crashes
Performance problems usually come from a configuration that exceeds the machine’s available resources, a missing or failing dependency, or an unoptimised mod. Treat each extension as a variable rather than changing the entire configuration at once.
Isolate mods and plugins
- Record CPU, memory, storage, and network behavior while the server is stable.
- Disable one suspected mod or plugin.
- Restart and reproduce the same player activity or map area.
- Compare stability and log errors with the previous run.
- Repeat until the offending extension is identified, then update, remove, or replace it.
Disabling everything at once may make the crash disappear but does not identify the cause. Keep a staged, known-good configuration so you can restore service quickly.
Match settings to server size
Use configuration values appropriate to the number of players, map, structure count, and mod load. A setting that is acceptable for a small private server can overwhelm a larger public instance. When crashes occur during peaks, reduce the expensive feature or extension first, then test under comparable player activity.
Check storage and missing resources
Insufficient disk space can interrupt updates and prevent saves from flushing. Confirm free space, ensure the save directory is writable, and inspect logs for missing packages. Validate files before assuming a hardware failure.
Fix “App ID specified by server is invalid”
This Steam join message is different from a failed SteamCMD installation. Community reports associate it with Steam’s client-side join flow; some users saw the same message with other games, whether or not the target server was running. No official Studio Wildcard or Valve fix has been published in the material available for this guide.

Try these user-reported workarounds, treating them as unverified:
- Add the server to Steam’s Game Servers favorites using its address and query port, then join from that list.
- Use a Steam launch link in this form, replacing the address and port:
steam://run/346110//+connect ADDRESS:PORT/ - Restart Steam and confirm the client is signed in before trying the join again.
- Test another server. If the same App ID error appears across unrelated games, the Steam client’s join flow is more likely than your ARK installation.
Do not treat either workaround as a guaranteed repair, and do not expose an administrative password in a shared link.
Self-hosting versus rented hosting for troubleshooting
The technical diagnosis is similar, but responsibility for each layer differs.

Choose the model based on who should own the network and maintenance work. Neither model prevents an incompatible mod or broken save.
A complete recovery checklist
- Write down the exact symptom, last successful start, recent patch, mod change, and server address.
- Stop duplicate processes and back up the save and configuration.
- Read the newest files in
ShooterGame/Saved/Logs. - Start with mods disabled and test a temporary clean world.
- If the clean world fails, complete a SteamCMD validation for app
376030. - Confirm client and server versions match.
- Verify UDP 7777, UDP 7778, and UDP 27015, plus optional TCP 27020 for RCON.
- Clear the password-protected-server browser filter and wait several minutes for listing.
- Test
open IP_ADDRESS:PORTfrom an external network. - Re-enable mods one at a time and keep the first failing combination disabled.
When to stop troubleshooting and restore a backup
Restore a known-good save when the failure began immediately after a mod removed an item or asset, the log repeatedly reports save deserialization errors, and the same installation starts a clean world. Preserve the broken save separately for later recovery. If validation, a clean world, matching versions, and correct ports still fail, collect the console log, launch parameters, edition, map, mod IDs, and exact client error before contacting the host or community support. That evidence is more useful than repeated reinstalls.
