Steam’s published figures—2 GB of RAM minimum and 6 GB recommended—describe the game client, not a server process. AssettoServer documentation covers Windows and Linux installation, but does not publish CPU, RAM or upload-bandwidth thresholds by player count, mod load or number of concurrent instances.

That means you should choose a hosting approach first, then validate the machine or plan against your expected players, server instances, custom content and network capacity. The figures advertised by an individual hosting plan are useful for evaluating that plan, but they are not universal compatibility requirements.

Assetto Corsa has two different workloads: the client that each driver runs and the dedicated server that coordinates sessions. Confusing them is the most common sizing error.
| Published figure | Applies to | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| 2 GB RAM minimum | Steam game client | The minimum memory listed for running the player application under Steam; it is not a dedicated-server requirement. |
| 6 GB RAM recommended | Steam game client | Steam’s recommended client memory figure; it cannot be converted into a server minimum. |
| CPU, RAM and upload limits by player count | Dedicated server | Not established by the authoritative material available for this topic. |
Steam labels the 2 GB and 6 GB numbers as client system requirements (Steam, n.d.). A server may run without rendering graphics, while handling session state, physics coordination, connections, configuration and custom content. Its resource profile therefore differs from the application on a driver’s PC. Do not describe 2 GB as the minimum RAM for a server or 6 GB as a recommended server target.

No reliable specification found for Assetto Corsa sets a CPU model, core count, RAM amount or upload rate for a particular number of players. There is also no authoritative table that translates mod size, AI use, weather settings or simultaneous server instances into hardware thresholds. Any precise “X players need Y GB” rule should be treated as an unverified rule of thumb unless its author documents the test conditions.
Which variables affect server capacity?
Instead of starting with a single number, describe the workload you intend to run. These variables determine what you need to measure:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Concurrent drivers: A four-driver practice room is a different workload from a full grid. More connections generally mean more session state and network traffic, but the available sources do not quantify a per-driver CPU or RAM increment.
- Number of server instances: One process is not equivalent to several races, practice servers or leagues running at once. Count every concurrent instance when evaluating a host.
- Custom cars, tracks and apps: Asset files consume storage and may affect startup time or distribution. A large content library is not, by itself, a published RAM requirement; keep sufficient disk space and observe actual process behavior.
- Configuration and simulation load: Grid size, AI, timing, weather and plug-ins can change workload. There is no authoritative sizing matrix for these settings.
- Other programs on the machine: A computer that also runs the game client, voice chat, recording software or other services has less headroom than a dedicated host.
- Upload capacity and latency: Players need a stable route to the server. Your practical limit depends on upstream capacity, connection quality, routing and the traffic generated by your configuration; no tested bandwidth threshold by player count is established here.
Record these assumptions before selecting a plan or machine. If they change—such as adding a second league instance or a large mod pack—retest rather than relying on the original estimate.
CPU: what to evaluate when no minimum is published
Assetto Corsa server documentation does not identify a mandatory processor model or clock speed. Treat CPU selection as an observation and isolation problem rather than a checklist of unsupported numbers.
Prioritize consistent single-process performance
Compare the processor allocation promised by a host, whether that allocation is dedicated or shared, and whether you can monitor usage. A plan stating “1 vCPU” tells you how the provider describes its allocation; it does not prove that every Assetto Corsa configuration will perform acceptably on it. On a self-hosted computer, leave capacity for the operating system and any software you run alongside the server.

Watch for contention and scheduling
Short CPU spikes can produce lag even when an average utilization graph looks low. On shared hosting, noisy neighbors or provider-level throttling can matter as much as the advertised vCPU count. During a representative session, monitor per-process CPU use, frame or tick consistency if exposed by the server, and player-reported delays. Increase the allocation or reduce concurrent instances if the process is repeatedly saturated.
Do not buy by core count alone
More cores are not automatically useful if the server process does not distribute its work across them. Conversely, a machine that runs several independent instances may benefit from additional cores. Because the available sources do not publish a scaling model, compare your observed workload with the exact processor allocation and instance limits of the plan you are considering.
RAM: avoid turning client figures into server limits
Memory requirements depend on the server process, loaded content, operating system, other services and the number of instances. The only numeric RAM figures established here—2 GB minimum and 6 GB recommended—belong to the Steam client.
Account for the whole host
On a self-hosted system, total installed RAM must cover the operating system, AssettoServer, content files, logs, monitoring and any game client running on the same computer. Leave operating headroom so the system does not resort to swap or terminate processes under pressure. On managed hosting, ask whether the stated RAM is an actual allocation, a shared limit or a plan maximum, and whether it applies per instance.
Measure working set and failure symptoms
Use the operating system’s process and memory counters while loading your largest track and car combination and while the expected number of drivers is connected. Warning signs include swap activity, failed launches after adding content, out-of-memory messages, or a host that becomes unresponsive when a second instance starts. These observations are more useful than applying the client’s 2 GB or 6 GB figures to a server.

Storage is a separate resource
RAM is not the same as disk space. Custom cars, tracks, server files, backups and logs require storage even when the process has plenty of memory. Keep free space for updates and temporary files, and check whether a provider’s asset-storage quota is separate from its RAM allocation.
Bandwidth, ports and reachability
A server can have adequate CPU and RAM yet remain unreachable if its network path is wrong. AssettoServer’s beginner documentation lists these default forwarding values:
| Port | Protocol | Purpose in the beginner guide |
|---|---|---|
| 9600 | TCP and UDP | Default game-server port to forward. |
| 8081 | TCP | Additional default port to forward. |
Those are defaults, not a promise that every installation uses them. Read the server’s actual configuration and forward the configured values instead. Create matching firewall exceptions on the host and, where applicable, router rules. A router may require separate entries for TCP and UDP on port 9600. If your internet service uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound traffic, ordinary forwarding may not be sufficient; the documentation supplied for this topic does not establish a universal workaround.
Basic reachability checklist
- Start AssettoServer and note the ports in its configuration or startup output.
- Assign the host a stable local address so router rules do not point to a different device after a lease renewal.
- Allow the configured TCP and UDP traffic through the host firewall.
- Forward the same protocol and port values from the router to the host’s local address.
- Have a driver outside your home network test the lobby or connection. A test from inside the same LAN may succeed even when internet forwarding is broken.
- If the connection fails, check the server log, operating-system firewall, router rule, ISP restrictions and whether the process is listening on the expected address.
Do not claim a universal upload speed for a given grid. The available material contains no tested bandwidth thresholds by player count, and real requirements vary with the server configuration and network path.

Windows path
Download the current AssettoServer release and follow its Windows installation instructions. Keep the server files in a location with sufficient disk space, install the required supporting components identified by the current documentation, and create a dedicated configuration for your instance. Before inviting players, start the process locally, confirm that it loads the intended cars and track, and review its log for missing files or configuration errors.
Linux path
Community Linux instructions commonly use SteamCMD to obtain the required game-server files and edit server_cfg.ini and entry_list.ini. Those guides can illustrate the workflow, but they are community material and may be dated. Verify commands, paths, dependencies and configuration keys against the current AssettoServer documentation before copying them to a production host. Run the process under a restricted service account, keep configuration and content backups, and arrange a restart method so a crash does not leave the server offline indefinitely.
Self-hosting responsibilities
- You maintain the operating system, server software, content and backups.
- You troubleshoot firewall, router and address changes.
- You supply stable power and internet service.
- You decide how to monitor resource use and apply updates.
- You must protect administrative access and avoid exposing unrelated services on the same machine.
A spare desktop, mini PC or virtual machine can be a practical home-server platform, but no particular model or RAM configuration is validated by the available evidence. Select hardware only after defining the workload and confirming that you can monitor and maintain it.

Managed hosting: what the advertised plan does—and does not—prove
A managed service runs the server process and operating system on your behalf, reducing router administration and maintenance on your own computer. You still need to check supported content, configuration access, location, backups, limits and current terms.
One provider’s plan description gives this example:
Best Value
- Day One Edition includes the 2020 GT WORLD CHALLENGE PACK DLC adds a new track, two new cars and more than 60 new liveries
- Experience true next-generation gaming with increased visual fidelity through 4K graphics, and 60FPS for a faster and smoother race experience
- 2021 Liveries: Updated liveries from the 2021 season
- Fully Immersive Simulation: Race like a real GT World Challenge driver, with options to configure tyres, chassis, engine set up, and more
- New-Generation Graphics & Visual Effects: Photorealistic weather conditions and multi-channel audio sampling to create that authentic GT racing experience
| Plan detail | Stated value | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Player slots | 4 | The plan’s stated capacity, not a universal Assetto Corsa limit. |
| CPU allocation | 1 vCPU | The provider’s allocation label; performance depends on the underlying host and workload. |
| RAM | 2 GB | The provider-specific memory allocation, not an official minimum. |
| Asset storage | 2 GB | The plan’s stated content-storage allowance, separate from RAM. |
Verify that plan’s availability and terms at the time you subscribe. Ask whether the slot count is enforced, whether CPU is shared, how custom content is uploaded, and what happens when storage or memory limits are reached. The example demonstrates how to read a plan specification; it does not establish that every four-driver server will work with 1 vCPU and 2 GB of RAM.
Self-hosting or managed hosting?
| Decision factor | Self-hosting | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Operating-system maintenance | You patch and administer it. | The provider generally operates the host; confirm what maintenance is included. |
| Router and firewall | You configure forwarding and inbound rules. | The provider normally exposes the service; you still configure the game instance. |
| File and configuration control | Usually complete control of files and settings. | Depends on the control panel and provider policy. |
| Resource limits | Limited by your hardware and internet connection. | Defined by the selected plan’s slots, CPU, RAM and storage. |
| Custom content storage | You provide and back up disk space. | Check the plan’s asset quota and upload method. |
| Availability and support | You handle power, outages and troubleshooting. | Support and uptime practices vary; read the current terms. |
Choose self-hosting when you want control, can maintain a machine and can make the configured ports reachable. Choose managed hosting when you prefer a provider to operate the process and accept its slot, resource, storage and configuration limits.
A practical sizing and validation process
- Define the scenario. Write down peak simultaneous drivers, number of instances, largest content set, AI or plug-in use, and whether the host also runs other applications.
- Choose the operating model. Decide between a machine you administer and a managed plan whose stated limits match the scenario.
- Start with documented allocations. Treat the provider’s CPU, RAM, slots and storage as boundaries to test—not as guarantees beyond that plan.
- Load the heaviest realistic session. Use the largest track, car set and configuration you expect, then connect the expected number of drivers.
- Monitor the host. Record CPU saturation, memory pressure, swap, disk space, network errors and process restarts during startup and racing.
- Test from an external network. Confirm that players can reach the configured ports and that firewall and router rules survive a restart.
- Change one variable at a time. If performance degrades, reduce instances or content temporarily, then retest before changing hardware or plans.
- Document recovery. Keep configuration backups, update notes and a restart procedure so you can restore a known-good session.
Common mistakes and fixes
Mistake: quoting the Steam client requirement as server sizing
Fix: Label 2 GB minimum and 6 GB recommended as client figures only. Size the server from measured workload and the allocation you actually control.
Mistake: assuming a hosting plan is an industry standard
Fix: Identify the provider, plan, slot count, CPU, RAM and storage as that plan’s terms. Compare your scenario with those limits and verify that the offer is still current.
Mistake: forwarding the wrong ports
Fix: Match router and firewall rules to the values in the running server configuration. AssettoServer’s beginner defaults are TCP+UDP 9600 and TCP 8081, but a customized installation may differ.
Mistake: relying on an old Linux tutorial without checking versions
Fix: Use community SteamCMD, server_cfg.ini and entry_list.ini examples as orientation only, then reconcile every command and setting with current documentation.
Recommended Free Tools
Mistake: ignoring storage and maintenance
Fix: Count cars, tracks, logs, backups and updates in your disk plan, and reserve time for operating-system and server maintenance.
Bottom line
Assetto Corsa has no published universal dedicated-server requirement for RAM, CPU or upload bandwidth. Steam’s 2 GB minimum and 6 GB recommended figures are for the client. Use AssettoServer’s Windows or Linux documentation, expose the ports used by your actual configuration, and validate a host or managed plan against your own player count, instances, content and monitoring results. A provider’s 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, four-slot and 2 GB storage example is a plan specification—not a minimum that applies to every server.
