Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUsually, yes—with limits. A typical 365 nm UVA counterfeit detector is intended for brief, controlled inspections. A hood or enclosure that blocks direct line-of-sight exposure, short inspection periods and avoiding the beam at your eyes or bare skin are the key precautions. European occupational-safety guidance describes low-power, shielded banknote checks as normally presenting no occupational UV hazard to eyes or skin, but that description is not a blanket guarantee for every consumer lamp or an invitation to stare into one.
For banknotes and identity documents, UV inspection is designed to be non-destructive. It can reveal fluorescent fibres and inks without touching the document. Packaging, labels and other products are generally suitable for brief UVA observation, but no single published exposure limit covers every polymer, coating, dye or ink. Unknown materials should not be left under a powerful lamp for repeated or prolonged periods.

What a counterfeit-checking UV light actually reveals
Authentication lamps do not make a whole note or package glow uniformly. They illuminate features deliberately built into genuine materials. The UK Home Office and National Document Fraud Unit (NDFU) describe the contrast this way: Using ultraviolet (UV) light you can see counterfeit documents that fluoresce (shine) more brightly than genuine documents which use dull, secure paper/material.
Fluorescent fibres and inks
Security fibres or printed elements can fluoresce at a controlled wavelength. A genuine watermark should never react under UV, according to UK identity-document validation guidance, while security fibres may fluoresce. A low-quality counterfeit often contains ordinary brighteners or paper that responds much more strongly than the subdued background of a genuine document.

Why wavelength matters
UK document-checking guidance recommends a source centred on 365 nm. The Reserve Bank of Australia likewise recommends a UV black light around 365 nm for fluorescent banknote features and warns that many 395–400 nm LED lights are unsuitable for those features. A decorative “black light” that looks bright to the eye can therefore be a poor currency detector even though it is labelled UV.
Are these lamps safe for eyes and skin?
The normal, controlled-use case
For a low-power lamp used for a few seconds at a time, with the source recessed behind a hood or enclosure, the practical risk is much lower than with an exposed high-intensity source. The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work characterises banknote checking as short exposure to low-power UV lamps and says shielded equipment normally creates no occupational UV hazard to eyes or skin.
“Normally” is important. That guidance describes a typical workplace detector, not every torch, inspection floodlight or unlabelled LED sold to consumers. Irradiance, distance, beam angle, shielding and cumulative use all change the exposure. Treat the lamp as an optical source that must be aimed at the item, not at a person.

Eye precautions
- Choose an enclosure, hood or viewing slot that prevents direct line-of-sight to the lamp.
- Never stare into the emitting window, even if the light appears dim.
- Keep the unit below eye level where practical and position the document between you and the source.
- Do not use a bare lamp as a room light or point it toward another person.
- Stop using equipment with a cracked housing, missing filter or damaged shield.
Skin precautions
Do not deliberately illuminate bare skin. Hold the item under the source and keep inspection periods short. Ordinary handling during a quick check is different from resting a hand, arm or face under a powerful lamp for minutes. If a manufacturer supplies a duty cycle, distance or warning label, follow it rather than substituting a guess.
What safety marking to look for
IEC 62471-6:2022 sets requirements for UV-product risk assessment, safety information and labelling. A workplace buyer should look for a stated wavelength, product instructions, exposure warnings and photobiological-safety information consistent with that standard. A CE mark or a product name alone does not tell you the lamp’s output or shielding performance.
A safe inspection procedure
- Identify the source. Confirm that the unit is intended for authentication and that its stated wavelength is near 365 nm. If the wavelength and instructions are missing, treat the device as unsuitable for professional checking.
- Inspect the housing. Check that the hood, viewing slot, filter and switches are intact. Do not bypass an interlock or remove a shield to make the item brighter.
- Set up the work area. Place the detector on a stable surface below eye level. Reduce ambient light only as much as needed to see fluorescence; darkness is not a reason to hold the source closer.
- Keep the item in the viewing zone. Slide the note, document or label under the shield rather than bringing your face to the lamp. Keep fingers outside the illuminated opening.
- Use a short exposure. Observe the relevant fibres, ink or background, then switch off or remove the item. Do not leave a batch under continuous illumination while doing another task.
- Record and cross-check. Note what you see and continue with physical and other machine checks. A UV response is evidence about one feature, not a final authenticity decision.
- Store it safely. Switch off after use, allow any manufacturer-specified cooling period, and keep the detector where children cannot operate it unsupervised.
Can UV damage banknotes, identity documents or packaging?
Banknotes and identity documents
The strongest evidence concerns documents and currency. UK validation guidance describes identity-document checking as non-destructive and suitable for repeated checks. Correctly used UV reveals fluorescent inks and fibres while leaving the document available for other inspections. That does not mean any lamp at any distance is harmless: an unusually intense or continuously operated source can exceed the conditions assumed by the guidance.

Labels, cartons and other packaging
Brief 365 nm observation is generally a surface inspection, so a normal check is unlikely to alter a package visibly. However, the cited guidance does not establish one safe exposure time for every plastic film, varnish, adhesive, dye or printed ink. Photosensitive coatings and polymers can differ, and repeated close exposure to a high-intensity source is a different situation from a quick retail check.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When material compatibility is unknown, use the lowest practical intensity, keep the lamp at the maker’s recommended distance, limit each observation to the time needed to read the feature, and avoid running the lamp continuously. Test a non-critical sample or an inconspicuous area only if the item’s owner permits it; do not sacrifice a valuable package to prove a point.
What is not established
No universal published damage threshold or safe exposure time covers all packaging and products. Claims such as “UV can never fade a label” or “a five-minute limit is safe for every plastic” go beyond the available evidence. The responsible conclusion is narrower: intended, brief UVA inspection is generally low-risk for the item, while prolonged or high-intensity exposure remains material-dependent.

Choosing a detector: the specifications that matter
| Criterion | What to prefer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Wavelength | 365 nm UV source | Recommended by UK document guidance and the Reserve Bank of Australia for fluorescent security features. |
| 395–400 nm LEDs | Use only when the currency or document authority specifically supports them | Many lights in this range are unsuitable for banknote fluorescence despite being sold as black lights. |
| Shielding | Enclosure, hood, recessed viewing area or interlock | Prevents direct line-of-sight exposure and makes short, repeatable checks easier. |
| Output and control | Stated irradiance or duty-cycle instructions, with a controllable exposure | Wattage alone does not establish eye, skin or material safety. |
| Additional tests | Magnetic-ink sensing, magnification or other document checks | Deutsche Bundesbank advises preferring detectors that examine more than one banknote security feature. |
| Safety information | Clear warnings and UV photobiological-safety information consistent with IEC 62471-6:2022 | Lets a workplace assess foreseeable exposure instead of relying on marketing language. |
A Safescan product sheet illustrates the category with a detector using a 9 W UV lamp. That wattage is a product specification, not a universal safety rating: the enclosure, optical design, distance and operating instructions determine how the output reaches a user or an item.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a UV result cannot prove a note is genuine
Counterfeiters can use brighteners, fluorescent inks or other materials that imitate one visible response. Conversely, a genuine note can look unusual after contamination, wear, laundering or exposure to chemicals. UV should therefore be treated as one filter in a layered inspection.
A practical multi-feature sequence
- Start with ordinary print. Check sharpness, registration, colour transitions and raised or intaglio areas where the issuing authority specifies them.
- Use transmitted light. Hold the note or document toward a suitable light source to inspect watermarks, security threads and alignment.
- Run the 365 nm check. Look for the expected fluorescent fibres or inks and for an unexpectedly bright overall background. Remember that a genuine watermark should not fluoresce.
- Check magnified details. Use a loupe or the detector’s magnifier for microprinting and fine lines if applicable.
- Use a second machine feature. Magnetic-ink detection or another supported sensor provides an independent signal.
- Compare with a known genuine example. Compare the same denomination, series and orientation under identical conditions; do not rely on memory of how “bright” a note should be.
If any feature conflicts, retain the item for issuer, bank or law-enforcement advice rather than declaring it genuine from the UV result alone. UK guidance specifically recommends combining UV with print quality, watermarks, fibres, transmitted-light and alignment checks.

Workplace and retail considerations
Risk assessment
Employers should document who operates the detector, how close the eyes and skin can be, how long a typical check lasts, and what happens if a shield fails. Select equipment with manufacturer instructions and the UV-product risk information called for by IEC 62471-6:2022. Train staff to inspect the object rather than the source and to report damaged housings.
High-volume checking
Cashiers or document examiners may perform hundreds of short checks. A shielded, fixed detector is preferable to a handheld bare lamp because it keeps distance and beam direction consistent. Arrange the workstation so the viewing opening is below eye level and the operator can switch the source off between items. If the job requires continuous or unusually close exposure, obtain a formal occupational assessment rather than assuming the low-power banknote guidance still applies.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Using a 395–400 nm novelty torch for currency: replace it with a detector centred near 365 nm and verify the issuing authority’s feature requirements.
- Judging authenticity by brightness alone: compare the expected pattern and complete the physical and additional-machine checks.
- Holding an open lamp close to the face: use an enclosed detector, keep it below eye level and view the item through the intended opening.
- Leaving packaging under the lamp: switch off after the feature is observed, especially when the material or coating is unknown.
- Assuming wattage equals safety: read the irradiance, distance, duty-cycle and shielding information; a 9 W label by itself cannot answer the exposure question.
- Continuing with damaged equipment: remove it from service until the shield, filter and housing have been inspected or replaced.
Bottom line
A shielded 365 nm UV counterfeit detector is generally appropriate for brief checks of banknotes and documents and is normally low-risk to people when used as directed. Keep the source out of direct sight, avoid bare-skin exposure and never treat a consumer lamp as automatically equivalent to a tested workplace detector. For packaging and products, brief inspection is usually non-destructive, but there is no universal material-damage limit; avoid prolonged, close or high-intensity illumination when compatibility is unknown. Finally, use UV as one authentication feature alongside print, watermark, transmitted-light, alignment and—where available—magnetic or magnified checks.
