Most current Q Timex reissues documented by Timex are water resistant to 50 m. Timex classifies 50 m as suitable for washing hands and light swimming, and the Q Timex 1979 Reissue listing specifically permits “short swims.” That does not make every Q Timex safe for every water activity: ratings vary by reference, 50 m is not a diving rating, and water resistance depends on an intact case, crystal, crown, pushers and gaskets.
Before getting in the water, read the meter marking on your exact watch or its official product listing. If it says 50 m, keep to light or short swimming, never dive with it, do not press buttons or operate the crown underwater, and rinse it with fresh water after salt-water exposure.

What “water resistant” means on a Q Timex
Water resistance is a pressure rating for a particular watch reference, not a permanent guarantee and not a statement that the watch can be taken to the labeled depth. A Q Timex marked 50 m has been designed and tested for the conditions represented by that rating. The number does not mean you can swim 50 meters below the surface.
Timex uses activity categories alongside the meter figures. Its current guide places 50 m in the “Washing hands, Light swimming” category. The Q Timex 1979 Reissue product specification goes further for that model by saying “Short swims.” Those are the safest practical interpretations for a 50 m Q Timex: casual, brief swimming rather than prolonged, high-impact or underwater activities.

The exact reference controls. Q Timex is a family of designs that includes different cases and movements, so the word “Q” alone cannot establish a water rating. The caseback marking and the product page for your specific reference take priority over a general description of the collection.
Can I swim with my Timex Q?
Yes, if your particular Q Timex is marked 50 m water resistant and its seals, crystal, crown, pushers and case are in good condition. Under Timex’s guidance, that means light or short swimming. A normal pool swim can fit that category, but the watch should not be treated as a dive watch.
Swimming creates more stress than simply standing in rain or washing your hands. Arm movement, jumping into water, water jets and temperature changes can produce pressure spikes. Chlorinated or salt water can also attack finishes and leave residue around seals and controls. Staying within the rating and handling the watch carefully reduces those risks but cannot eliminate them.

Is a 50 m Q Timex safe for swimming?
It is suitable only for the limited swimming use Timex assigns to 50 m: light swimming, with the Q Timex 1979 Reissue explicitly described for short swims. Do not use a 50 m Q Timex for diving, jumping from a height, high-pressure water sports or recreational scuba diving.
Can I wear a Q Timex in the pool?
A sound 50 m model can be worn for a short, easy pool swim. Keep the crown and any pushers untouched while submerged. Afterward, rinse the watch with fresh water and dry it with a soft cloth. If the watch has a lower rating, no meter marking or visible damage, leave it out of the pool.
Timex activity guidance by rating
| Water-resistance rating | Timex activities listed for the rating | What that means for a Q Timex owner |
|---|---|---|
| 50 m (164 ft) | Washing hands; light swimming | Use only for light or short swimming; not diving. |
| 100 m (328 ft) | Washing hands, light swimming, snorkeling, poolside diving and surfing | A broader activity envelope than 50 m, provided the exact watch is marked 100 m and remains properly sealed. |
| 200 m (656 ft) | Washing hands, light swimming, snorkeling, poolside diving, surfing and recreational scuba diving | This is the rating Timex associates with recreational scuba diving; the exact model and its instructions still control. |
The 100 m and 200 m categories do not upgrade a 50 m Q Timex. They are useful for comparing references when choosing a watch, but you must verify that the specific Q Timex actually carries the higher marking.

Q Timex examples documented at 50 m
Timex lists the following Q reissues with a 50 m specification:

- Q Timex 1975 SSQ Digital Reissue TW2Y06100: 50 m water resistance.
- Q Timex 1979 Reissue TW2T80700: 50 m water resistance; its product listing includes “Short swims.”
These examples show why the reference number matters. Other Q Timex variants may have a different rating or different construction. Check the model number, not just the dial style, color or “Q Timex” name.
How to check your exact Q Timex before swimming
- Find the reference number. Look on the caseback, paperwork or purchase record for a code such as TW2Y06100 or TW2T80700.
- Read the water-resistance marking. Look for a meter or feet figure on the caseback and match it to the exact product specification. A watch described only as water resistant without a depth indication should be treated as splash-resistant, not suitable for submersion.
- Inspect the exterior. Check the crystal or lens for cracks, the case for impact damage, and the crown and pushers for looseness or abnormal movement.
- Consider service history. Opening the case for a battery change or repair can compromise water resistance if the gasket is not correctly replaced and the case is not properly closed. A recently damaged or opened watch should not go straight into water.
- Match the activity to the rating. For 50 m, choose light or short swimming only. If you need snorkeling, surfing or diving, choose a reference whose rating and Timex guidance explicitly cover that activity.
What not to do in water
- Do not dive with a 50 m Q Timex. Timex manuals state that water resistance does not make a watch a diver’s watch. A 50 m rating is not a scuba rating.
- Do not press buttons underwater. Timex’s guidance says not to press buttons under water unless the watch is indicated as 200 m water resistant. For a Q Timex, the conservative practice is to leave every pusher untouched while submerged, regardless of whether you are using a chronograph-style control or a digital function.
- Do not operate the crown underwater. Pulling, turning or pushing the crown can open a path through the crown seals and allow water into the case.
- Avoid high-pressure water. Water jets, shower sprays, spa jets and forceful splashes can stress seals more than a calm swim.
- Avoid sudden temperature extremes. Hot tubs, saunas and very cold water can cause pressure changes and accelerate seal deterioration.
Why water resistance can fail
A watch’s rating depends on a system of seals rather than on the number printed on the dial. The crystal or lens, caseback, crown, pushers and gaskets all have to remain intact and correctly seated. A scratch that reaches through the crystal, a bent case, a loose crown or a worn gasket can reduce protection.

Impact and visible damage
If the watch has been dropped, struck against a pool edge or developed a crack, assume its water resistance may be compromised. Do not test it by swimming. Have it inspected and pressure-tested by a qualified watch service provider.
Battery changes and case opening
Battery replacement requires opening the case on quartz Q Timex models. Even when the case is closed again, the original water resistance should not be assumed unless the gasket and closure have been checked. Ask for a water-resistance test after service if you intend to swim with the watch.

After swimming: rinse and dry the watch
- Leave the crown closed. Confirm that it is fully pushed in before rinsing.
- Rinse with fresh water. Timex instructs users to rinse after exposure to salt water. Fresh water also helps remove chlorine, sunscreen and other residues.
- Dry gently. Use a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not use a hair dryer, heater or compressed air, which can damage finishes or force moisture past seals.
- Check for symptoms. Fogging under the crystal, condensation, a stopped movement, erratic display or corrosion around the crown indicates possible water entry. Stop using the watch and arrange service promptly.
Rinsing is maintenance, not a way to make an unsuitable watch safe. A watch with no depth marking, damage or a loose crown should stay dry even if it will be rinsed afterward.
Choosing a Q Timex for regular water use
If swimming is occasional, a sound 50 m reference can meet the limited use Timex describes. If your activities include snorkeling, surfing or poolside diving, look for a Q Timex reference explicitly marked 100 m and confirm that its product guidance covers the activity. For recreational scuba diving, Timex associates the 200 m category with that use; a 50 m model is not an alternative.
Compare more than the number. Check whether the watch has pushers you might accidentally operate, whether the crown feels secure, whether the crystal and case are undamaged, and whether service records show that seals were replaced and tested. A higher rating cannot compensate for a damaged or improperly closed watch.
A practical pre-swim checklist
- Exact Q Timex reference identified.
- Meter marking confirmed on the caseback or official listing.
- Rating matches the planned activity.
- Crystal, case, crown and pushers show no damage.
- Crown is fully closed before entering water.
- No buttons or crown operation while submerged.
- No diving or high-pressure water with a 50 m model.
- Fresh-water rinse and gentle drying after salt-water exposure.
What to do if the watch gets wet unexpectedly
Remove the watch from the water, dry the outside and do not operate the crown or pushers. If condensation appears beneath the crystal or the watch behaves abnormally, seek professional service rather than waiting for it to dry on its own. Continuing to wear a water-damaged watch can spread corrosion to the movement and contacts.
If there is no visible symptom, still review how the exposure happened. A brief splash on a marked, undamaged 50 m watch is different from a dive, a loose crown or a watch with a cracked crystal. When the rating or condition is uncertain, treat the watch as not safe for further immersion until it has been checked.
