Yes. IMAX can cost more without delivering the same experience at every theater: the brand includes very large 70mm film venues, newer laser auditoriums and older digital rooms. Other possible drawbacks include limited showtimes for 70mm, an aspect-ratio trade-off, and venue-dependent complaints about loud sound or uncomfortable seats. Whether those matter depends on the specific auditorium and movie.
Why IMAX experiences differ
“IMAX” is not a single projection format or screen size. A premium ticket might get you a 70mm film presentation in a purpose-built giant auditorium, a laser projection in a multiplex, or an older digital setup. The label alone does not tell you how large the screen is, what aspect ratio it supports, or which projection system the theater uses.

| Format | What to expect | Potential drawback |
|---|---|---|
| 70mm IMAX film (15/70) | Can present a 1.43:1 image on a suitably equipped screen. SlashFilm reports an effective resolution of roughly 14K–18K; that is an estimate, not a universal measured figure for every screening. | Very limited availability, and the largest screens can feel overwhelming from seats near the front. |
| IMAX with Laser | SlashFilm describes a dual-laser 4K system. Digital/laser IMAX screens are usually 1.90:1. | It cannot show the full height of a 1.43:1 image on a 1.90:1 screen, and it is not equivalent to a 70mm film presentation. |
| Older digital IMAX | Some early digital installations used two overlaid 2K projectors. | Image quality and auditorium scale can be less impressive than the name or ticket premium suggests. |
SlashFilm’s format descriptions and estimates are summarized in its IMAX coverage. A CBC columnist described one smaller multiplex screen as roughly a third the size of a “true IMAX” screen; that comparison is an illustration, not a reliable measurement of every theater. “LieMAX” is a derisive fan nickname for some smaller digital auditoriums, not an official technical category. Some viewers also prefer those rooms because a giant screen can be uncomfortable or feel distorted from certain seats.

Higher ticket prices do not guarantee a proportionally better experience
The premium is the clearest practical drawback. SlashFilm estimates a digital IMAX surcharge of about $5 over a traditional screening. DFI Rentals reports that IMAX tickets can cost $20–$30 or more, but the article date and a consistent market or region are not established, so that range should not be treated as a current typical price. Check the actual checkout price against a standard screening at the same cinema.

- Valid for all movies and for all showtimes

Price does not always track technical scale: a smaller digital room may cost more than a larger-format alternative nearby. The question is not just whether IMAX costs extra, but what the extra buys at that location.
A 1.90:1 screen cannot show the full height of 1.43:1 footage
Some movies use IMAX-format footage, often only for selected sequences. A 1.43:1 image is taller than a 1.90:1 screen, so a presentation on the latter cannot show the complete image height; the top and bottom are cropped or otherwise adapted to fit. The effect is movie- and presentation-dependent, so an IMAX-branded screening does not necessarily mean every scene fills a taller screen.

- There is a surchase for 3D, premium large screen format (e.g., IMAX, AMC Prime), alternative content, dine-in-theatres, film festival, special theatrical presentations and premium services; location surcharges may also apply at select locations, including Disney and Universal properties operated by AMC
That ratio is not automatically a flaw. At 1.90:1, the screen is close to the 1.85:1 aspect ratio common in standard theaters, which suits many films. If a movie was not made with taller IMAX sequences, the taller 1.43:1 presentation may offer no additional image to see.
70mm IMAX is hard to find
True 70mm IMAX venues are rare compared with digital IMAX auditoriums. DFI Rentals has described the number of theaters capable of presenting a particular film as intended as about 30, but that is a dated, film-specific headline rather than a current count of all 70mm venues. Availability varies by film and location, so confirm the format and venue for the specific showtime rather than assuming every IMAX listing is 70mm.

Sound can be too intense for some viewers
Some moviegoers report IMAX screenings as painfully loud, boomy or bass-heavy; others describe the sound as clear or not especially loud. These are anecdotal reports, not measurements establishing that IMAX is generally louder than other formats. Levels and perception can vary by theater, movie and seat. If sound sensitivity is a concern, check the venue’s own information and consider whether you would be more comfortable at a standard screening.
Seats and viewing angles depend on the auditorium
There is no single IMAX seating standard implied by the name. Some venues have older, non-reclining seats; others may be more comfortable. A seat close to a very large screen can also require more eye and head movement and may cause neck discomfort. If comfort matters, inspect the auditorium seating chart and choose a position farther back rather than assuming the premium format includes premium seating.

When is IMAX worth the premium?
It is most compelling when the particular movie has meaningful IMAX-shot sequences, the auditorium has a large screen and a capable projection system, and the price difference fits your budget. A 70mm 1.43:1 screening can be a distinct choice for a film made to use that taller frame, but it is not the only reason to choose IMAX: laser presentation, screen size, sound and seat location can matter too.
A standard screening may be the better value if the movie does not use IMAX footage, the local IMAX auditorium is small, the surcharge is steep, or you prefer recliners and a less overwhelming screen. Dolby Cinema and other premium large formats are alternatives worth comparing by their actual local auditorium, seat, and ticket price rather than by format name alone.

How to check an IMAX show before buying
- Check the exact format. Look at the theater’s showtime details for “70mm,” “IMAX with Laser,” or other projection information. If it only says IMAX, the format may not be specified; consult the venue’s own listing or ask the theater.
- Look for the screen ratio or dimensions. A listed 1.43:1 screen can show a taller frame than the usual 1.90:1 digital/laser IMAX screen. If the venue does not publish a ratio, do not infer it from the brand.
- Confirm the movie uses IMAX footage. Check the film’s official format or showtime information. Some movies use the expanded frame only in selected scenes, and many do not use it at all.
- Compare the total ticket price. Compare IMAX with a standard screening at the same cinema, for the same date and seat category; pricing varies by venue and showtime.
- Review the auditorium and seating chart. Check whether seats recline and choose a location that suits your preferred viewing distance and angle.
