Which stocks helped lift the indexes?
AI-linked and large technology shares contributed to the advance. The Associated Press identified Nvidia, up 2.1%, as the strongest single force lifting the S&P 500. Reuters also reported early gains in Nvidia, Meta Platforms, Microsoft and Tesla. These reports point to important contributors, not proof that every AI-related stock rose or that AI alone caused the market’s gains. Associated Press; Reuters, republished by Kitco

Why did stocks rise while Treasury yields climbed?
Investors were weighing competing signals. Optimism about corporate earnings and technology growth supported share prices, while higher yields remained a potential headwind. The Associated Press explained that higher yields can raise borrowing costs, slow economic activity and make investors less willing to pay high prices for stocks and other assets. It also noted that spending on AI data centers was one factor supporting economic strength and bond yields. Associated Press
Reuters’ October 5 coverage described investors balancing earnings expectations against concerns including government finances, debt issuance, energy costs and inflation. A rising index on a day of higher yields shows how markets can weigh those forces at once; it does not establish that rising yields are harmless or predict what stocks will do next. How broad was the rally?
An index record does not mean most stocks were also setting records. In Reuters’ intraday snapshot, Nasdaq-listed stocks had 23 new 52-week highs and 157 new lows; S&P 500 constituents had 3 new highs and 18 new lows. Those counts are a point-in-time breadth check, not closing totals, and they show why a strong index reading can coexist with weakness across many individual shares. Reuters, republished by Kitco

Reports gave slightly different readings because they captured different observation times. The Associated Press put the 10-year Treasury yield at 5.31%, up from 5.28% late Friday. Reuters reported 5.296% in its intraday coverage. Kiplinger reported the 10-year at 5.309% and the 30-year at 5.664%, each at a new 52-week high. The figures are reported session readings, not current market quotes; the 30-year figure refers to a different maturity from the 10-year. Associated Press; Reuters, republished by Kitco; Kiplinger

Was the next session the same?
No. Tuesday, October 6, was a separate session. The Guardian reported that both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed at records that day after an AI-chip rally and a dip in Treasury yields. Those Tuesday developments should not be read back into the October 5 session, when the S&P 500 gained but did not close at a record and Treasury yields rose. The Guardian
