Most stick insects are not a threat to people or pets, but some species can spray an irritating defense or strike with spiny legs. All feed on plants, and certain species can damage gardens or become pests if captive insects escape. The practical risk depends on the species, where it is found, and whether it is handled or released.
How dangerous are stick insects to people and pets?
“Stick insect” covers many species, and their defenses differ. An undisturbed insect is not the same risk as one that is handled, threatened, or bitten by a pet.

Some species spray irritating chemicals
The Florida twostriped walkingstick (Anisomorpha buprestoides) can release a strong-smelling secretion that is painfully irritating to the eyes and mucous membranes, according to University of Florida IFAS Extension. The profile describes reported eye injuries, including a dog case, while noting uncertainty about whether the insect caused that dog’s ulcerated cornea. This is a species-specific warning, not evidence that all stick insects are poisonous to people or dogs.
San Diego Zoo also identifies American walkingsticks and Peruvian fire sticks as species that spray defensive chemicals capable of causing intense pain and temporary blindness in predators. Do not assume an unfamiliar walkingstick has the same defense—or that it lacks one.

Some large species use spiny legs defensively
The Malayan jungle nymph (Heteropteryx dilatata) may raise its abdomen and swing its spiny hind legs when threatened, according to Taipei Zoo. Avoid provoking or roughly handling an unidentified insect, and keep it away from your face.
What to do if a stick insect sprays near an eye
- Rinse immediately. For the twostriped walkingstick’s spray, University of Florida IFAS Extension advises irrigating the eye with large amounts of water.
- Get prompt professional advice. Contact a medical professional for a person or a veterinarian for a pet, particularly if there is pain, redness, vision change, or persistent irritation.
- Prevent further contact. Keep people and pets away from the insect rather than trying to handle it. The documented first-aid advice concerns reported spray encounters with this species; it is not a universal treatment protocol for every insect or exposure.
Can stick insects damage plants?
Yes. Stick insects eat plants, but the extent and type of damage depend on the species and location. California’s UC Integrated Pest Management profile says Indian walking sticks feed on a range of plants, including azalea, bramble, camellia, geranium, hawthorn, hibiscus, ivy, jasmine, oak, privet, pyracantha, rose, and some vegetables. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources also notes feeding on ivy, privet, rose, and some vegetable plants, and warns that escaped pet walking sticks may become landscape pests.

Those host-plant examples are California-specific; they are not a universal list for every stick insect or region. If you find one on a plant, identify the species and check for actual feeding damage before choosing a response. The cited sources do not establish a generic pesticide recommendation for every encounter.
Why you should not release a pet stick insect
A captive insect that escapes or is released can feed on local vegetation and, depending on the species and location, become a pest. Taipei Zoo’s guidance, updated September 1, 2026, warns that releasing pet insects may disrupt ecosystems, threaten native species, spread disease, or cause agricultural damage. If you can no longer keep one, contact the seller or a relevant organization about rehoming or responsible disposal rather than releasing it outdoors.
