Place the figure on a sturdy, level surface away from direct sunlight, fireplaces, and heating or air-conditioning vents. A properly sized enclosed case can limit dust and accidental contact, but the case and its base must safely support the figure. Dust gently with a soft detail brush or microfiber cloth, and check the maker’s care instructions before using moisture or cleaners.
Choose a safe display location
Start with the figure’s surroundings, whether or not you plan to use a case. Sideshow advises keeping collectibles away from direct sunlight, fireplaces, and heating or air-conditioning vents. Light and UV can damage plastics and components such as colorants, coatings, and stabilizers. The Canadian Conservation Institute explains that this damage can affect both a plastic object’s polymer structure and its non-polymer components, with possible discoloration, embrittlement, cracking, or loss of strength.

That is why a UV-filtering case should not be treated as permission to display a figure in direct sun. It may reduce some UV exposure, but it does not remove the broader risks of a poor location.
Support the figure and case securely
Use a sturdy, steady, level shelf, cabinet, or pedestal. For a large figure, consider the combined weight of the figure, its base, and the case; check the support’s stated load capacity rather than assuming that a surface is strong enough. The reviewed guidance provides no universal load rating, so suitability depends on the actual figure and display furniture.

Stability matters as well as capacity. A custom pedestal can be designed around a large or unusual figure’s footprint and balance, but there is no single pedestal size that fits every collectible.
Choose a case that fits the figure
A large acrylic display case or cabinet can help reduce dust and accidental contact. Before choosing one, measure the figure, base, and any projecting accessories. Check the internal dimensions and allow enough clearance to place and remove the figure without catching delicate parts.

- Fit and access: Confirm internal measurements, the opening or access method, and room to handle the figure safely.
- Support: Check the case base and cabinet’s stability and any stated load capacity.
- Glazing: Verify the material and any specific UV-filtering claim. Do not assume all acrylic has the same UV performance.
- Cleaning: Consider whether you can reach the inside surfaces without putting the figure at risk.
- Unusual dimensions: A custom case and pedestal can be an option when a ready-made case does not fit. Architectural Plastics describes made-to-order vitrines and pedestals with choices such as footprint, access, glazing, and dust-control or security needs.
For example, Tru Vue says its named conservation-grade acrylic products block up to 99% of harmful UV rays. That is a manufacturer statement about its product range, not a specification for acrylic generally or a guarantee that every ready-made case uses that material.
Dust the figure gently
For loose dust, Sideshow recommends a clean microfiber cloth or soft detail brush. Use light pressure, and take care around thin accessories, joints, and other delicate projections. Do not spray cleaner directly onto the figure.

Dry cleaning is the safer starting point, but it is not risk-free for every material. The Canadian Conservation Institute cautions that removing dust from plastics can be difficult without causing further damage and recommends careful dry methods where cleaning is necessary. If the figure’s maker gives material-specific instructions, follow those before trying a damp cloth, polish, or treatment.
Clean the case according to its material
For acrylic, use only a cleaner the case maker says is suitable, and follow its directions. Some household cleaners contain abrasives that can scratch acrylic; some solvents can cause fine cracks or crazing. Acrylic can also attract dust through static electricity, so frequent dry wiping may not be a solution if the cloth or method creates static.

Glass is heavier than plastic, and case framing can affect how surfaces should be cleaned. Follow the case manufacturer’s instructions rather than applying one cleaning method to every display.

Advice for a plastic figure may not apply to a polystone statue, fabric-covered figure, or silicone-skinned collectible. Check the maker’s care guidance before using moisture or cleaners, and avoid forcing a figure into a pose that places strain on its materials. Sideshow specifically advises less stressful, static poses for certain 1:6 figures with silicone skin and seamless joints. Keep the original packaging for storage or transport when possible.
