Standing desks are useful primarily because they reduce prolonged sitting, not because standing continuously is healthier. The strongest evidence shows that sit-stand workstations help office workers sit roughly 52 to 88 fewer minutes during a workday, depending on the intervention and follow-up period. Evidence for major improvements in health markers, pain, calorie expenditure or long-term disease risk is weaker, and productivity is usually maintained rather than dramatically increased.
A height-adjustable desk, combined with reminders and regular movement, is therefore more defensible than a fixed standing desk or an attempt to stand motionless all day.

What the best studies actually found
Most studies measure whether a desk changes behavior: time spent sitting, standing and breaking up prolonged sitting. Those outcomes are considerably more certain than clinical outcomes such as blood pressure, weight, diabetes risk or cardiovascular disease.
2025 systematic review: the reduction in sitting persists
A 2025 systematic review by Silva, Ramos, Teno and Júdice examined 12 studies. Across the entire day, participants reduced sedentary time by an average of 68.7 minutes at three months, 77.7 minutes at six months and 62.1 minutes at 12 months. During working hours, the reductions were 73.0 minutes at nine weeks, 88.0 minutes at three months, 80.8 minutes at six months and 48.0 minutes at 12 months.

| Follow-up | Less sedentary time across the full day | Less sedentary time during work |
|---|---|---|
| 9 weeks | Not stated in the review summary | 73.0 minutes/day |
| 3 months | 68.7 minutes/day | 88.0 minutes/day |
| 6 months | 77.7 minutes/day | 80.8 minutes/day |
| 12 months | 62.1 minutes/day | 48.0 minutes/day |
The 12-month result matters because it shows that some benefit remains after the novelty has worn off, although the average effect is smaller than at three or six months. The authors concluded that sit-stand interventions can reduce sedentary behavior in the short, medium and long term, both at work and over the full day.
Cochrane review: about 84 to 116 fewer workplace sitting minutes
A 2018 Cochrane review found that sit-stand desks reduced workplace sitting by 84 to 116 minutes per day on average. It also found reductions in total sitting and in sitting bouts lasting at least 30 minutes. The review could not determine whether a standing-only desk or a sit-stand desk was more effective.
In the review’s wording: “The use of sit-stand desks seems to reduce workplace sitting on average by 84 to 116 minutes per day.” That is a behavioral outcome; it is not a claim that users lose a particular amount of weight or prevent a particular disease.

A 2023 meta-analysis by Zhou and colleagues combined 11 randomized controlled trials involving 1,894 office workers. Multicomponent programs reduced occupational sitting by 52.25 minutes per eight-hour workday. In the subgroup that included sit-stand workstations, sitting fell by 71.95 minutes per eight-hour workday, standing increased by 66.56 minutes and prolonged sitting fell by 47.05 minutes. These subgroup estimates were graded moderate certainty.
The difference between the 52-minute overall result and the nearly 72-minute sit-stand subgroup result reflects how interventions vary. A desk supplied without training, prompts or follow-up is not equivalent to a desk embedded in a behavior-change program.

Does reducing sitting make you healthier?
It may help, but the evidence does not justify promising dramatic health improvements from a desk alone. A NIOSH-indexed scoping review of 53 articles found significant results in 61% of behavioral outcomes, 37% of physiological outcomes and 31% of discomfort outcomes. Only 7% of work-performance outcomes were significantly improved.
That pattern supports a cautious interpretation: the reliable change is that people sit less and stand more. Physiological and comfort effects are smaller and less consistent, and long-term clinical outcomes were not established by these reviews.

What the studies do not establish
- They do not establish a universal reduction in heart disease, diabetes or mortality risk.
- They do not provide a dependable calorie-burn number that applies to every user, task or desk.
- They do not show that standing continuously is superior to alternating between sitting, standing and walking.
- They do not identify one schedule that everyone should follow.
Replacing some sitting with standing is best viewed as one part of an active workday. Walking to meetings, taking stairs, stretching and leaving the workstation still matter; a standing desk is not a substitute for those activities.
Do standing desks burn more calories?
Standing generally requires more muscular activity than sitting, but the evidence summarized here does not quantify a reliable calorie difference for a typical desk user. Energy expenditure also depends on body size, footwear, movement, task and how long the person actually stands. Without a measured value under defined conditions, a claim such as “you burn a specific number of extra calories per hour” would be misleading.
If weight control is your goal, treat the desk as a way to interrupt sitting rather than as an exercise device. A short walk or other purposeful movement will not be replicated by standing still.

Will a standing desk make you more productive?
Large productivity gains are not established. The NIOSH-indexed review found significant improvements in only 7% of work-performance outcomes, making productivity the least consistently improved domain. Most evidence supports preservation of performance while sitting time falls, not a dramatic boost in output.
A comparative review found that standing, treadmill and cycling workstations can show short-term productivity benefits in some tasks. However, treadmill workstations may reduce performance on computer tasks, where typing, pointing and precise visual work are important. A desk that lets you stand without moving is therefore less likely to interfere with those tasks than a walking workstation.
A 23-trial network meta-analysis found that sit-stand workstations reduced work-specific sedentary time compared with typical desks. Overall certainty was low, and interventions that added reminders or promotion generally outperformed a workstation alone. In practical terms, prompts may improve adoption more than buying a more elaborate desk.
Which desk type fits the evidence?
The three common arrangements solve different problems. The table separates what is supported by evidence from details that were not reported in the cited reviews.
| Desk type | Effect on sitting | Can you alternate positions? | Productivity evidence | Adjustability and setup cost | Prompts or coaching |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Conventional fixed sitting desk | No built-in reduction; behavior depends on the user | No, unless the user leaves the desk | Acts as the comparison condition in many studies | Adjustability: limited. Cost: not stated in cited evidence | Not included by default |
| Fixed standing desk | May reduce sitting if it replaces a sitting desk, but comparative superiority was not established | No; height cannot be changed for sitting | No clear large productivity advantage established | Adjustability: none or limited. Cost: not stated in cited evidence | Not included by default |
| Height-adjustable sit-stand desk | Most directly supported for reducing workplace sitting; studies report roughly 48 to 88 fewer work minutes at several follow-ups | Yes; the user can change posture during the day | Performance is generally maintained; large gains are not established | Adjustability: high. Cost: not stated in cited evidence | Results tend to improve when paired with reminders, education or promotion |
A fixed standing desk can be useful for someone who already knows that standing suits their tasks, but it removes the option that makes sit-stand interventions practical: changing position when the task or body requires it. The evidence most directly supports a height-adjustable workstation used as part of a broader behavior plan.

How to use a sit-stand desk without creating a new problem
1. Make position changes easy
Set the desk so the keyboard, mouse and screen remain usable in both positions. If changing height requires clearing the surface or moving equipment, you are less likely to switch and the intervention loses its behavioral advantage.
2. Start with variation, not an endurance target
The studies show reduced sitting, not a requirement to stand for a fixed percentage of the day. Begin with short standing periods during tasks that tolerate them, then sit when concentration, fatigue or discomfort calls for it. No universal sit-to-stand schedule has been established.
3. Add reminders or prompts
Use a calendar alert, computer notification or team routine to prompt a position change. Network-meta-analysis findings indicate that reminders, education or promotional components tend to outperform a workstation provided on its own.
4. Include movement breaks
Standing in one place is still sedentary in the broader sense of low movement. Walk briefly, change rooms for a call, refill water or perform another safe movement instead of treating the raised desk as the entire solution.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors5. Adjust the workstation for both positions
- Keep the top of the screen near a comfortable viewing height in each position.
- Keep elbows and wrists relaxed rather than reaching upward when the desk is raised.
- Use supportive footwear and an anti-fatigue surface if standing causes foot or leg discomfort.
- Change position before pain escalates; discomfort is a signal to adjust the setup or reduce the standing interval.
Is standing all day bad for you?
Standing all day is not the goal supported by the evidence. Prolonged static standing can create its own discomfort, and the cited reviews do not show that replacing every seated minute with standing improves health. The more defensible target is posture variation: sit for some tasks, stand for others and move whenever possible.

If you have persistent leg, back or foot symptoms, a medical condition affected by prolonged standing, or difficulty balancing, obtain individualized advice before changing your workstation. A desk should be adjusted around your capabilities, not used to force an average schedule onto your body.
How often should you switch between sitting and standing?
No universal interval was established in the retrieved reviews. The studies measured average changes in sitting and standing over weeks or months rather than proving that a particular timer setting is optimal for every worker.
Use a flexible rule: switch when a task changes, when you notice fatigue or stiffness, or when a reminder prompts you. The useful outcome is accumulating less uninterrupted sitting over the day, not meeting a rigid standing quota. If a reminder consistently causes discomfort, shorten the standing period, change the surface or choose a movement break instead.

What results should you realistically expect?
- Most likely: less workplace sitting and more time standing, especially when the desk is paired with prompts or coaching.
- Possible but less certain: modest improvements in some physiological or discomfort measures.
- Not established: a guaranteed calorie deficit, major weight loss, prevention of chronic disease or a large productivity increase.
- Potential trade-off: treadmill workstations can impair computer-task performance, while a sit-stand desk is generally designed to preserve normal keyboard and screen work.
In short, a sit-stand desk is a behavior-change tool. Its value comes from making it easier to break up long periods of sitting while keeping work performance stable.
