The safest default is to unplug one when it is no longer needed, particularly before sleeping or leaving home. Use only an intact, compatible charger from a traceable manufacturer, and keep it dry, uncovered, cool and ventilated.
USB-C describes the connector and charging system, not the quality of the power supply. A charger can negotiate the right output through USB Power Delivery (USB PD) and still be unsafe if it is damaged, counterfeit, wet, poorly made or used in a hot, covered location.

Why an unattended charger creates avoidable risk
A plugged-in adapter is connected to household mains even when no phone, tablet or laptop is attached. Most modern adapters include protections against over-current, over-voltage, overheating and short circuits, but those protections cannot eliminate every manufacturing defect, component failure or physical hazard. If a fault causes excessive heat, arcing or fire while nobody is present, there may be no one to disconnect it or call for help.

Electrical Safety First gives unusually direct consumer advice: “Don’t use USB chargers overnight or while you are out of the house.” This is a precautionary recommendation, not a claim that every charger will fail. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada identify credible outcomes of defective or misused chargers as overheating, fire, electric shock, burns and improper charging.

Health Canada explains the consequence of leaving one unattended: “An unattended USB charger that starts a fire in a home may reasonably be expected to cause burn or smoke inhalation injuries that may result in death.” The warning applies to the unattended condition; it does not mean that a compliant charger is likely to ignite during ordinary use.
USB-C and USB Power Delivery do not guarantee safety
What PD negotiation does
USB-C Power Delivery allows a charger and device to negotiate a supported voltage and current. A phone can request a lower-power profile from a higher-capacity adapter, so a 65-watt charger does not automatically force 65 watts into a device designed for less. The cable also has to support the required current and features.
What PD negotiation cannot do
Negotiation does not test the adapter’s insulation, mains circuitry, fire enclosure, component quality or counterfeit status. It cannot make a cracked housing, wet connector, frayed cable or incompatible product safe. Treat the USB-C shape as a connection standard, not as a safety certification.

Construction, certification and compatibility matter most
When selecting a replacement, the important questions are who made it, whether the exact model has recognized third-party safety evaluation, what output profiles it supports and whether the seller can be traced and contacted. A generic “universal” claim is not evidence that the adapter meets the requirements for your region or device.
- Traceable manufacturer: The label should identify a real manufacturer, model number, electrical ratings and applicable certification marking. Keep the packaging or a photograph of the label for future recalls.
- Exact electrical match: Confirm the charger’s voltage, current and power profiles against the device maker’s requirements. USB PD compatibility helps, but it does not replace checking the cable and device specifications.
- Physical integrity: Reject adapters with cracked cases, loose parts, bent prongs, burn marks, melted plastic or a cable whose insulation is split or crushed.
- Purchase support: A reputable seller with a clear return process is safer than an anonymous listing whose origin and testing cannot be established.
Apple’s documentation permits compliant USB-C power adapters, including its 20W USB-C power adapter, but the same principle applies to any brand: verify the exact model and ratings rather than relying on wattage or appearance.
Heat, moisture and ventilation are practical safety controls
Apple and Google both instruct users to operate charging equipment in a well-ventilated area. Do not put an adapter or cable under a pillow, blanket or mattress, and do not leave it pressed against skin for a prolonged period. Bedding and clothing trap heat; a heater, radiator or direct sun can raise the temperature further.

Keep the adapter and connector dry. Water, condensation and conductive debris can create leakage paths or a short circuit. Do not charge in a bathroom or other damp location, and never plug in equipment that has been exposed to liquid until it has been assessed and replaced if necessary.
Warmth under load can be normal, especially with a compact high-power adapter, but a sudden change in temperature is a warning. Unplug a unit that becomes unusually hot, cycles on and off, smells of hot plastic or makes a buzzing or crackling sound.
Can you leave a phone charger plugged in overnight?
You can reduce risk by charging while you are awake and present, then disconnecting the adapter and cable when charging is complete. Overnight charging adds hours during which a fault could go unnoticed, and it often places the equipment near bedding or upholstered furniture. If overnight charging is unavoidable, put the adapter on a hard, open surface away from fabric, heaters and liquids; use an intact, compatible, safety-evaluated model; and follow the device maker’s instructions. This arrangement reduces exposure but does not change the conservative advice to unplug when unattended.

Does a USB-C charger use electricity with nothing connected?
Yes. An adapter normally consumes some no-load or standby power while it remains plugged in. The amount depends on its design and operating state; there is no single wattage that applies to every USB-C charger.
The European Commission’s ecodesign rules set maximum no-load or standby limits for covered external power supplies and wireless chargers. Those limits are product-category requirements, not a universal measurement for every USB-C adapter. Standby electricity is usually a secondary concern compared with heat, fire or shock exposure, but unplugging eliminates both the standby draw and the energized-device risk.

In 2019, CPSC Acting Chairman Ann Marie Buerkle said that cooperation among jurisdictions could improve voluntary safety standards when agencies consult early and compare data and experience. For shoppers, the practical result is to look for a recognizable, traceable safety evaluation on the exact model rather than assuming that a familiar connector guarantees compliance.

- Read the label. Record the manufacturer, exact model, input rating, output profiles and certification marking. Compare the output requirements with the device and cable.
- Inspect the housing and prongs. Do not use a cracked, loose, melted or discolored adapter, or one with bent or damaged prongs.
- Inspect the cable and USB-C plug. Look for fraying, crushed insulation, bent contacts, contamination or a plug that no longer fits firmly.
- Check the environment. Place the adapter on a hard, dry, open surface with air around it. Keep it away from bedding, paper, heaters and water.
- Monitor the first uses. Stop if it becomes unusually hot, sparks, buzzes, crackles, smells odd or repeatedly disconnects.
- Disconnect after charging. Remove the adapter from the outlet when it is no longer needed, especially before sleeping or leaving the house.
Warning signs that mean stop immediately
- Cracks, melted plastic, swelling or exposed internal parts
- Burn marks, smoke, sparks, buzzing or crackling
- An unusual chemical or hot-plastic smell
- Damaged prongs, a loose plug or a cable with frayed insulation
- Liquid exposure, a wet connector or visible dirt inside the USB-C port
- Heat that is sudden, extreme or significantly greater than during previous use
If any sign appears, switch off power at the outlet if it is safe to do so, unplug without touching damaged metal, and stop using the equipment. Do not open or repair a mains adapter yourself. Dispose of failed chargers through your local electrical or electronic-waste program; do not place them in ordinary recycling unless local rules specifically allow it.
How to compare two small USB-C chargers
Wattage is only one specification. Use the following order of checks when deciding between models:

| Heat dissipation | Can it sit uncovered with air around it, and does it remain stable rather than becoming abnormally hot? |
| Seller and returns | Can you obtain a replacement or refund if the unit is defective or recalled? |
| No-load consumption | Has the manufacturer or regulator documented standby performance for this exact model? |
A higher-wattage adapter is not automatically safer, and a tiny adapter is not automatically less safe. Build quality, certification, compatibility and operating conditions carry more weight than the number printed beside “W.”
When leaving one plugged in is especially poor practice
- The adapter is hidden behind furniture, under bedding or inside a tightly enclosed power strip.
- The outlet or room is damp, dusty, unusually hot or exposed to children or pets.
- The charger is an untraceable bargain, lacks a credible certification mark or has inconsistent labeling.
- The cable is shared between devices with different power requirements or has visible wear.
- You are leaving home for an extended period and cannot notice a fault.
For a routine phone charge, the lowest-risk pattern is simple: use a compatible, intact adapter in an open, dry location while you are present, then disconnect it and store it where the cable and connector will not be damaged.
