Yes—claim a monthly PlayStation Plus game if you might play it later, provided it is still in that month’s offer. Claiming adds it to your library; you can download it when you are ready. You can play it through Plus only while you have an active membership, so claiming is not the same as owning the game outright.
What claiming a monthly game actually does
PlayStation’s monthly games FAQ says members can add monthly games to their library and download and play them later while an active membership plan is in place. The practical value is that you do not have to install or start a game during the month it is offered.

Claim and download are separate choices: add the game to your library before the monthly offer ends, then download it whenever you want to play. Sony says new monthly games are added each calendar month, so check the current PlayStation Plus games listing for the offer in your region rather than relying on an old list.

If your membership expires or you cancel and the paid period ends, games obtained at no extra cost through Plus become unavailable. PlayStation’s UK cancellation guidance explains that subscription benefits end with the membership period. Claiming therefore preserves access for a future time when you are subscribed; it does not preserve access during a lapse.

PlayStation’s Sweden membership guide says returning subscribers regain access to Plus content they previously downloaded. That is regional guidance, so policy details can vary. The central point is that the game’s Plus access depends on an active membership, not merely on having claimed it once.
Monthly games and Game Catalog titles are not the same
All three plans—Essential, Extra and Premium—include monthly games. Extra and Premium also include the Game Catalog, while Premium adds the Classics Catalog. PlayStation notes that some Game Catalog and Classics Catalog titles have announced removal dates. A catalog game leaving the service is different from a monthly game claimed into your library: do not assume that adding or downloading a catalog title gives it the same continuing library access.

Sony’s usage terms also say games and benefits may change, and availability can vary by plan, country or region, platform and device. Downloaded games require a valid subscription and the game to remain available through the service. Check the listing for the particular title and your region.

For a game you genuinely might play, claiming is usually the low-effort choice: it costs no extra beyond the membership and does not require an immediate download. It is most useful if you expect to maintain or renew Plus. If you plan to stop subscribing permanently and want access regardless, the claim does not meet that need.
