Sometimes—but browser storage is not a guarantee against a thief with physical access. The decisive questions are whether the computer was powered off or already unlocked, whether its storage is encrypted, and whether the browser profile has an additional unlock password. A powered-off laptop with full-disk encryption and a strong login is a very different risk from an open session that a thief can use immediately. Browser protections also vary: Firefox desktop’s separate Primary Password is optional and off by default, while Chrome says its on-device protection depends on the operating system. See Mozilla’s Primary Password documentation and Google’s explanation of Chrome password protections.
What a thief can access depends on the computer’s state
There is no single yes-or-no answer to whether saved browser passwords are safe after theft. Evaluate the device at the moment it disappeared and the protections enabled before that moment.

| Device state at theft | Likely exposure | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Powered off, full-disk encryption enabled, strong login required | Lower offline risk, although account takeover is still possible through other paths | Encryption protects data at rest and the login blocks ordinary access to the operating system. |
| Locked or asleep, with full-disk encryption | Usually protected against simple disk removal or profile copying | The attacker still needs the device credential or a weakness in the operating system. |
| Locked or asleep, without full-disk encryption | Higher risk of offline file access | A thief may remove or copy the drive and inspect browser-profile files. |
| Powered on and already unlocked | High risk | The browser can often decrypt credentials locally for autofill, and the thief may use active sessions without copying files. |
| Browser profile copied with its key material | Potential exposure of saved logins | Browser password storage must retain enough local key material to decrypt credentials when you use them. |
Full-disk encryption is therefore important, but it does not undo the danger of an unlocked desktop. If somebody can use the session you left open, they may reach email, cloud storage, financial sites, and other accounts even when the disk would have been secure while powered off.

A browser password manager has to decrypt a credential on the device before it can fill a sign-in form. Encryption of files at rest helps against an offline attack—such as a thief copying a drive—but it cannot by itself protect a session that has already been unlocked. The strongest practical setup combines a secure device login, full-disk encryption, and an additional browser or operating-system authentication step where available.

Firefox desktop: an optional Primary Password
Firefox desktop keeps saved credentials in a file named logins.json and stores a related key in key4.db. Mozilla says that someone who copies both files can read the saved logins if no Primary Password is configured. The Primary Password encrypts the key in key4.db, creating a separate barrier to the stored credentials. It is not enabled by default and is local to each Firefox profile and device. Firefox asks for it once per session when it needs access to saved passwords, so you must remember and enter another secret.
To enable it, open Firefox’s settings, go to the saved-login security area, and choose the option to use a Primary Password. Pick a strong, unique passphrase and keep a recovery plan; Mozilla cannot recover a forgotten Primary Password for you. Mozilla documents the feature and its storage model at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/use-primary-password-protect-stored-logins.
Mozilla also describes local saved-login encryption as AES-256-CBC. Firefox Sync login data is end-to-end encrypted with AES-256-GCM, and Mozilla says it cannot decrypt synced login data. Those statements describe Mozilla’s documented design; they do not make an already-compromised, unlocked computer safe. The technical explanation is at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-firefox-securely-saves-passwords.

Why full-disk encryption still matters
The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency advises encrypting computers, phones, removable drives, and files because unencrypted data can be read or altered by someone who gains access. Full-disk encryption protects the contents while the computer is shut down or otherwise locked, making a stolen drive much harder to inspect offline. CISA’s guidance is available at https://www.cisa.gov/resources-tools/training/how-protect-data-stored-your-devices.
Check that encryption is actually enabled rather than inferring it from the computer’s brand or operating system. Keep recovery material separate from the computer. On Apple silicon and T2-equipped Macs, Apple says data is encrypted automatically; FileVault adds a layer that requires credentials to decrypt or access the data, while older Macs need FileVault enabled manually. Apple’s instructions, including recovery-key considerations, are at https://support.apple.com/en-nz/guide/mac-help/mh11785/27/mac/27.

What syncing changes—and what it does not
Syncing passwords to an account gives you a recovery route if the computer disappears, but it also makes that account a high-value target. Protect the account with a unique password, two-step verification, and current recovery information. If an attacker takes over the account, they may obtain synchronized credentials without ever possessing the stolen computer.

Firefox says synced login data is end-to-end encrypted so Mozilla cannot decrypt it. Apple says iCloud Keychain passwords are among the categories always protected with end-to-end encryption. That does not mean every category of iCloud data has the same protection; Apple’s standard protection applies to other data unless Advanced Data Protection is enabled. Apple’s security overview is at https://support.apple.com/en-us/102651.
Before theft: a practical hardening checklist
- Use a strong device credential. A long passphrase or a high-entropy PIN is preferable to a short, reused password. Configure automatic locking so an unattended session does not remain open.
- Turn on full-disk encryption. Verify the status in the operating system’s security settings and store any recovery key away from the computer.
- Add a browser-specific barrier when available. In Firefox desktop, set a strong Primary Password if saved logins are present. It is separate for each profile and device.
- Secure the syncing account. Enable two-step verification, review recovery email addresses and phone numbers, and remove old devices or sessions you no longer recognize.
- Use unique passwords for high-impact accounts. Email, cloud storage, banking, work systems, and the account that syncs passwords should not share a password. Reuse can turn one exposed login into a chain of takeovers.
- Test lock and recovery behavior. Lock the computer, wake it, and confirm that the expected login or biometric prompt appears. Confirm that you can retrieve a recovery key without keeping it beside the device.
If the computer is stolen, act in this order
- Use another trusted device to revoke access. Open the account provider’s device or session list and sign out the missing computer wherever that control exists.
- Change the primary email or cloud-account password. Secure recovery channels and review active sessions, trusted devices, and recent security events. The email or cloud account is often the reset path for many other services.
- Change the most consequential saved passwords first. Start with email, banking and payment services, work accounts, cloud storage, identity providers, and any password reused elsewhere. Then work through the remaining saved credentials.
- Use remote lock or erase if the operating system supports it. These features generally require that tracking, management, or an account connection was enabled before the theft.
- Report the theft and preserve evidence. Record the device serial number, time, location, and any account alerts for the relevant local authority, employer, insurer, or school.
- Monitor for misuse. Watch financial statements, password-reset messages, login alerts, and account activity. Google specifically recommends signing out, changing the Google Account password, considering changes to saved passwords, and watching accounts for fraud; its guidance is at https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/7177579?hl=en-2.
Google’s lost-device instructions distinguish phones, tablets, and Chromebooks from Windows, Mac, and Linux computers. Those computers are not listed under Find your phone, so do not promise a remote-wipe option unless the operating system or an administrator actually provides one.
Should you change every password?
Not automatically, but change any credential that could have been displayed, autofilled, copied, or reset from the stolen session. If the device was powered off, fully encrypted, and protected by a strong login, the likelihood of offline extraction is lower; nevertheless, change the primary email or cloud password and review sessions because those actions reduce the consequences of uncertainty.

If the computer was unlocked, assume that an attacker could use active browser sessions, inspect saved passwords, install software, or read files. Prioritize accounts by impact rather than alphabetically, then replace reused passwords everywhere they appeared. Enable two-step verification after changing each critical account, and invalidate existing sessions when the service offers that control.

Browser storage versus a dedicated password manager
A separate password-manager application is not automatically safer. Compare the actual design and your configuration on these dimensions:
| Security question | Browser storage | Dedicated manager |
|---|---|---|
| Where is the decryption key? | Typically tied to the browser profile and operating-system protections; implementation differs by browser and platform. | Depends on the application’s documented vault design and operating-system integration. |
| Is there a separate unlock secret? | Firefox Primary Password is optional; Chrome may use account or biometric confirmation depending on the system. | Usually offers a distinct vault password, PIN, or biometric unlock, but settings vary. |
| What happens after sleep or reboot? | Behavior depends on browser, profile, and operating system. | Check its lock timer, reboot behavior, and whether biometrics merely unlock a cached key. |
| How is sync protected? | Firefox and Google document different encryption and account models; verify the one you use. | Verify end-to-end encryption, recovery design, device revocation, and breach alerts from the specific provider. |
| What is the usability trade-off? | Convenient and built in, which can encourage unique passwords and autofill. | More controls can add friction; excessive friction may cause unsafe notes, reuse, or disabling the lock. |
The right choice is the one you can keep locked, updated, and usable while maintaining unique credentials. Strong device encryption and a prompt lock remain necessary even when a separate vault is used.
Common situations and the right response
The laptop was stolen while unlocked
Treat this as an account-security incident, not only a hardware loss. Revoke sessions, change the primary email or cloud password, and rotate high-impact saved credentials immediately. Look for password-reset emails, new recovery methods, unfamiliar forwarding rules, and newly authorized applications.
The laptop was powered off and encrypted
Offline password extraction is substantially harder, but still change the account that syncs passwords and review its sessions. A thief may also obtain information from unlocked phones, written recovery codes, browser tabs, or notifications, so consider the whole account environment.
Best Value
Firefox had no Primary Password
If both logins.json and key4.db could be copied, Mozilla’s documented model says the saved logins may be readable. Rotate important credentials and enable a Primary Password on replacement devices.
You cannot remember whether encryption was enabled
Assume the weaker case until you verify it through the operating system or an administrator. Change high-value passwords, revoke sessions, and preserve account alerts while you determine the device’s encryption status.
The bottom line for a stolen computer
Saved browser passwords can be well protected at rest when the computer is powered off, fully encrypted, and locked behind a strong credential. They are not safe by default against an attacker who receives an already-unlocked session or a copied browser profile without an additional unlock barrier. Prepare before theft with encryption, prompt locking, unique passwords, account two-step verification, and—where supported—a separate browser password. After theft, revoke access and rotate the accounts that matter most before working through the rest.
