Relative dating supplies the order of events; radiometric dating supplies an estimated number of years for a mineral, rock, or biological material. Combining both can bracket when a fossil-bearing layer formed.
The result is an age estimate with analytical uncertainty and geological context. A date from volcanic ash above or below a fossil may constrain the fossil’s age without being the exact age of the fossil specimen.

What “age” means in fossil dating
A fossil can have several relevant ages. The organism died at one time, its remains were buried later, minerals may have replaced or filled the remains later still, and the surrounding rock may record a separate event such as an eruption. A dating result applies to the material and event measured by the method. Scientists therefore report an age together with the sample type, geological setting, method and uncertainty.

If a suitable mineral occurs inside the fossil or a short-lived organic material is preserved, a method may address the specimen more directly.

The National Park Service summarizes the boundary clearly: “Relative age dating determines the order in which a sequence of geologic events occurred … but cannot determine how long ago events happened.” National Park Service, Geologic Timescale, Geologic Dating Techniques, and Numeric Ages.
Relative dating: establishing which fossil is older
Superposition in sedimentary layers
Wind, water and ice move sediment that accumulates in beds. In a sequence that has not been overturned or severely disturbed, lower beds were deposited before higher beds. A fossil in a lower layer is therefore generally older than one in an overlying layer. This is an ordering relationship, not a calendar age: it can say “older than” and “younger than” without saying “72 million years old.”
Correlation between sites
Geologists trace recognizable beds across a region and compare distinctive fossil assemblages. If the same volcanic ash bed or characteristic assemblage appears at separate sites, those sections can be correlated even when the fossils are kilometers apart. Fossil succession— the appearance and disappearance of diagnostic species through time—extends that relative chronology across areas where the rock layers are incomplete.
What relative dating can and cannot do
- It can: order fossils and geological events, identify whether a fossil lies above or below a dated horizon, and correlate layers between sites.
- It cannot: provide elapsed years by itself, identify an exact death date, or replace a numeric age measurement.
Numeric dating: radioactive isotope clocks
Parent, daughter and half-life
Some atoms are radioactive. A parent isotope transforms into a daughter product at a statistically predictable rate. The half-life is the time required for half of the parent atoms in a sample to decay. Measuring parent and daughter quantities, while accounting for the sample’s initial conditions and geological history, lets a geochronologist estimate when the mineral formed or when its isotopic system was reset.

The clock dates the event recorded by the mineral. For a crystal that grew in cooling magma, that event is crystallization or cooling. For a metamorphic mineral, it may be a later heating or deformation episode that reset the system. That distinction matters when the dated rock is adjacent to a fossil rather than part of the fossil itself.
Common isotope systems
| Isotope system | Typical material or setting | Published half-life | Event and fossil relevance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon-14 | Previously living material | 5,730 years | Estimates time since death for suitable young organic remains; generally indirect or unusable for very ancient fossils. |
| Potassium-40 to argon-40 | Volcanic rocks and minerals, including ash or tuff | 1.25 billion years | Dates volcanic crystallization or cooling; ash above or below a fossil layer can bracket the layer. |
| Uranium-238 to lead-206 | Zircon and other suitable minerals | 4.5 billion years | Dates crystallization of resistant minerals; commonly constrains the age of associated sedimentary deposits. |
| Rubidium-87 to strontium-87 | Rock-forming minerals | Not stated in the cited introductory sources | Can date geological materials when the mineral system and history are appropriate. |
| Samarium-147 to neodymium-143 | Old materials and metamorphic rocks | Not stated in the cited introductory sources | Useful for older geological events; relevance to a fossil depends on its stratigraphic setting. |
These systems are not ranked from “best” to “worst.” The appropriate choice depends on the available material, the age range, the event to be dated and whether the desired answer is direct or stratigraphic. The National Park Service describes the systems and their applications in Radiometric Age Dating.
Why the dated sample is often not the fossil
Sedimentary grains can be older than the layer
Most fossils are preserved in sedimentary rocks. A sandstone, siltstone or mudstone is assembled from grains eroded from older rocks. A grain of zircon, for example, may have crystallized millions or billions of years before erosion carried it into the basin where the fossil was buried. Dating that individual grain would date its original crystallization, not the later deposition of the fossil-bearing bed.

Volcanic ash provides a time-stamped layer
A volcanic eruption can spread ash over a landscape in a short geological interval. As volcanic ash cools, minerals such as feldspar or zircon can begin—or become closed to—radioactive decay. A tuff or ash bed may therefore record the eruption’s age. The American Museum of Natural History explains that potassium-40 in volcanic tuff decays to argon-40 after the ash cools; measured isotope amounts estimate the time since the tuff formed. Bracketing a fossil-bearing layer
Suppose a fossil layer lies between two ash beds. If the lower ash is dated to an older age and the upper ash to a younger age, the fossil-bearing layer must fall between those events, provided the contacts are in their original order and the ash layers are correctly identified. A single ash bed can provide a one-sided constraint: a fossil below it is older than the eruption, while a fossil above it is younger, subject to disturbance and reworking checks.
This is why a report may give a fossil locality an age range even though the laboratory measured a mineral in volcanic rock. The numeric results anchor the stratigraphic sequence; the fossil inherits a geological constraint rather than a direct isotopic timestamp.
Radiocarbon dating for younger remains
How carbon-14 works
Living organisms exchange carbon with their environment, including radioactive carbon-14. After death, replenishment stops and the remaining carbon-14 decays. Measuring the amount left in suitable material—such as charcoal, bone collagen when preserved, shell or other previously living matter—can estimate when the organism died, provided contamination and the material’s preservation are assessed.

The National Park Service gives an effective carbon-14 range of approximately 100 to 50,000 years (2018). The method is therefore appropriate for comparatively recent archaeological and late-Quaternary remains, not dinosaurs or most fossils tens of millions of years old. Near the limits of the method, very little parent isotope remains, so results require especially careful laboratory and calibration treatment.

Why dinosaurs cannot be radiocarbon-dated in the usual sense
Non-avian dinosaurs lived far outside the effective carbon-14 window. Any original carbon-14 would have decayed through many half-lives, and fossils are commonly mineralized rather than preserved as closed, uncontaminated organic systems. Researchers instead date suitable volcanic minerals or use the ages of surrounding strata with isotope systems designed for much older geological events.
How a fossil-dating investigation proceeds
- Document the geology. Map the fossil’s exact layer, note bedding direction, contacts, faults, folds and any signs that sediment or fossils were moved after deposition.
- Establish the relative sequence. Determine which beds are above and below, correlate recognizable layers and identify fossil assemblages that support the ordering.
- Inventory datable materials. Look for volcanic ash, lava, tuff or minerals such as zircon that formed during a clearly interpretable event. For younger remains, assess whether suitable organic material survives.
- Select the isotope system. Match the method to the material and expected age. Carbon-14 is for young once-living material; potassium-argon is suited to appropriate volcanic material; uranium-lead and other systems serve different minerals and age ranges.
- Test sample integrity. Laboratories check whether the mineral remained a closed system, whether contamination or inherited grains are present, and whether later heating or alteration could have changed parent or daughter amounts.
- Measure and calculate. Isotope ratios are measured and converted to an age using the decay constant, standards and corrections appropriate to the method.
- Compare independent evidence. Researchers assess whether dates from multiple grains, ash beds or isotope systems agree with the stratigraphic order. A disagreement can reveal reworking, an inherited mineral, a disturbed contact or a reset clock.
- Report the constraint. The final interpretation states what was dated, which event it records, the uncertainty and how that result limits the fossil’s age.
How to read a reported fossil age
Separate the number from the material
“A 3.2-million-year-old fossil” is shorthand that may hide an important qualification. A more precise statement is: “A volcanic ash layer below the fossil was dated to 3.2 million years, so the fossil-bearing deposit is younger than that ash, subject to the documented stratigraphic relationship.” If ash above and below gives two constraints, report the interval and the uncertainty attached to each date.
Keep uncertainty attached
Radiometric results are estimates, not exact timestamps. Analytical precision, calibration, decay constants, sample heterogeneity and geological disturbance all affect the uncertainty. A rounded figure such as “about 3 million years” should not be rewritten as an exact age. Look for an uncertainty notation, an error range or a stated confidence interval in the original publication.

Distinguish age, range and resolution
- Point estimate: a central numerical result for the dated mineral or material.
- Uncertainty interval: the range reflecting analytical and modeling limits.
- Stratigraphic bracket: the interval imposed by dated horizons above and below a fossil layer.
- Resolution: how narrowly the evidence can separate events; two dates with overlapping uncertainties may not establish which event happened first.
Major complications and how scientists address them
Reworking and redeposition
Erosion can move an older fossil into younger sediment. Its physical position then reflects redeposition, not its original death or burial. Sedimentological evidence, abrasion, weathering and the relationship between the fossil and surrounding grains help identify this problem.

Contamination
Younger carbon can enter an old specimen, and laboratory or groundwater contaminants can alter measured isotope ratios. Researchers select clean material, remove contaminants where validated, analyze blanks and use independent checks. A carbon-14 result is only as meaningful as the material’s demonstrated association with the death event.
Disturbed or overturned strata
Folding, faulting and landslides can reverse or repeat layers. “Lower” does not automatically mean older unless the original facing direction and structural history are established. Field mapping and sedimentary structures are essential before applying superposition.
Inherited or reset minerals
A mineral carried into sediment may preserve an age from its source rock. Conversely, heat, fluids or metamorphism may partially or completely reset an isotope system. Laboratories examine grain textures, zoning and multiple analyses to distinguish a depositional signal from inherited or later events.

| Was a mineral formed before sediment deposition? | Detrital grains with internal textures and a spread of ages | Source-rock history; not automatically the depositional age. |
Putting the evidence together
The strongest fossil-age interpretations combine independent lines of evidence: a documented layer sequence, fossils that support correlation, one or more datable horizons, a method suited to the expected age and a transparent uncertainty statement. Agreement between those lines increases confidence; disagreement is information that prompts a geological explanation rather than a reason to choose the most convenient number.
For an overview of radiometric principles, isotope examples and geological time, consult the U.S. Geological Survey Geologic Time: Radiometric Time Scale. The central rule remains simple: relative dating tells scientists the sequence, while an appropriate isotope clock dates a particular material and event. Fossil ages are then inferred by placing that dated event correctly within the fossil’s geological context.
