Are Open-Source Mac System Monitors Safe? Permissions, Privacy, and Code Audits

Open-source Mac monitors are inspectable, not automatically safe. Check permissions, data flows, signing, release integrity, and maintenance before installing.

Open-source Mac system monitors can be a reasonable choice, but open-source status alone does not make an app safe. Judge the specific app and release: check what permissions it requests, what data it reads or sends, how its binary is signed and distributed, and whether its source and security practices are credible. Apple signing and notarization provide useful checks, not a privacy certification or guarantee against every threat.

Does open source mean an app is safe?

No. Open source means people can inspect the source code; it does not establish that anyone has reviewed it, that a downloaded app was built from that code, or that the app has no vulnerabilities. A repository glance is not a security audit. Any review should identify the specific release and the risks it is meant to assess.

Consider both the code and the path from source to the copy on your Mac. Look for release tags, build instructions, checksums or reproducible-build information where available, and a clear explanation of how the project publishes updates. A trustworthy-looking source repository does not by itself verify a separately distributed binary.

What permissions does a Mac system monitor need?

Permission requests should correspond to a named feature. A monitor may need access to particular system information or, for a specific feature, Bluetooth device details. Do not assume every menu-bar monitor needs broad access to your files or control of other apps.

macOS provides privacy controls for services including Bluetooth, Full Disk Access, Accessibility, Automation, and Location Services. Apple says Full Disk Access can allow access to all files, including data from other apps and certain administrative settings. macOS also asks users to approve access to protected locations such as Documents, Downloads, Desktop, iCloud Drive, and network volumes; Accessibility and Automation capabilities likewise require permission. Review and revoke access in System Settings if it is no longer needed. See Apple’s file and folder access guidance and Apple’s privacy controls guidance.

  • Ask which feature requires each permission and what data it enables the app to access.
  • Check whether the feature is optional and whether the monitor works without the grant.
  • Be especially cautious about Full Disk Access, Accessibility, Automation, and any request to install a privileged helper or run as administrator/root.

What does the app read or send?

Read the project’s data-flow and privacy descriptions closely. Identify telemetry, crash reports, update checks, cloud sync, diagnostic uploads, public-IP lookups, and any user-configured network probes. For each, ask what is sent, when, to whom, and whether it can be disabled.

“No telemetry” is not the same as “never connects to the internet.” An app may make an update request or connect to a host to measure latency without describing those operations as telemetry. The important question is whether the behavior is explained and matches the app’s actual operation.

  • MULTI-TOUCH FOR MAC: MacOS users can access touch and gesture controls on touch displays connected to their Apple devices using ViewSonic's vTouch driver Not available for iPhone and iPad
  • Performance Monitor: Its project page says the listed permission is Bluetooth, used to read paired-device names and battery levels. It describes a GitHub update check, an optional public-IP lookup that users can switch off, and a latency probe to a host selected in Settings. The page says the app is ad-hoc signed without an Apple Developer ID and provides first-launch instructions for bypassing the unidentified-developer warning. Its documented source-build route requires an Apple Silicon Mac, Xcode Command Line Tools, and Swift 5.10 or later. See the Performance Monitor project page.
  • Mectrics: Its project page says readings use local, read-only system interfaces, there is no telemetry, and the only possible network request is an update check initiated by the user. It documents macOS 15 or later and says the app is Developer ID signed and notarized; its README includes build-from-source steps. These are maintainer statements, not independent verification. See the Mectrics project page.

Does notarization mean an app is malware-free?

No. Apple says notarization checks for known malicious software. Its support page puts the limit this way: “An app that has been notarised by Apple indicates that Apple has checked it for malicious software and none was detected.” That is not a promise that an app is harmless in every sense, a review of its privacy practices, or a full audit of its source code. Apple also says macOS checks Developer ID signatures on downloaded apps to verify that they come from an identified developer and have not been altered. These controls help establish provenance and screen for known malware; they do not replace evaluating the app’s behavior. See Apple’s explanation of opening apps safely.

If a project is not Developer ID signed or notarized, find out why and understand the warning macOS displays. Treat instructions to bypass Gatekeeper as a deliberate exception, not a routine installation step. Compare the downloaded file with project-provided checksums or reproducible-build information if available.

How to review a specific release before installing

  1. Start at the canonical project page. Confirm the release tag, download asset name, supported macOS version and hardware, and whether the release is stable, beta, or repackaged by someone else.
  2. Check the distribution and signing chain. Determine whether the app is Developer ID signed and notarized. If not, understand the reason and the warning involved; compare the artifact against checksums or reproducible-build details when the project provides them.
  3. Map permissions to features. For every request, identify the data or capability it enables, whether it is optional, and whether the app still works without it. Scrutinize broad file access, Accessibility, Automation, and privileged installation.
  4. Trace the data flows. Check the project’s claims about update requests, telemetry, crash reporting, cloud features, diagnostics, and user-configured probes. Look for endpoints, triggers, transmitted data, and controls to turn features off.
  5. Review the relevant code and build materials. For a focused review, inspect permission declarations, network clients and URLs, update code, storage locations, launch agents or helpers, privileged operations, dependencies, and release/build scripts. Scope findings to the version examined and the threat model; source availability alone proves little.
  6. Assess maintenance and security response. Look for a security reporting channel, recent releases, issue handling, dependency updates, and clearly stated supported versions. Popularity and repository stars are not security measurements.

When is the built-in Activity Monitor enough?

macOS Activity Monitor avoids adding another monitor vendor and may be sufficient for checking processes and system activity. A third-party menu-bar app can offer additional views or convenience, but compare only the capabilities you actually need. Weigh permission scope, local versus remote processing, endpoint transparency, signing and notarization, update practices, maintenance, and the specific monitoring features—rather than relying on “open source” as a shortcut for trust.
