Choose based on your phone and language needs
Pick Gboard for a broadly documented Android option
Gboard is the more straightforward starting point if you use a non-Samsung Android phone, or if you want the keyboard’s language settings to remain separate from your device language. Google documents changing keyboard languages, glide typing, text correction, voice input, handwriting, and cursor movement with the space bar. Glide typing is not supported in every language, and voice input support also varies by language.

Stay with Samsung Keyboard for Galaxy integration
Samsung Keyboard makes the most sense if you use a Galaxy phone and prefer its keyboard experience or Samsung-specific integrations. Samsung documents Samsung Pass access from the keyboard, as well as two-finger swipe undo and redo. These may be useful conveniences, but they do not establish a security advantage or a measurable improvement in typing.
Check eligibility before choosing for AI features
Samsung’s Writing assist, previously called Chat assist on select devices, is available only on select phones and tablets running Android 14 with One UI 6.1 or later. Its listed tools include chat translation, Composer, writing styles, and spelling and grammar suggestions. Samsung’s US support page lists 16 languages across 23 locales and warns that features may not be available on incompatible devices. Basic Galaxy AI features are described as free on that page; enhanced Samsung and third-party AI features may have different terms or fees.

Google’s more advanced voice-writing capabilities are also restricted. Detailed voice edits are documented for Pixel 8 and later in English (US). Google says voice-command writing tools are available on Pixel 9, excluding Pixel 9a, and later. These are separate eligibility rules for particular capabilities, not a general comparison of everything either keyboard can do.
What translation and multilingual typing can do
Both companies document translation from within the keyboard. Gboard’s workflow lets you choose source and target languages, type, review a preview, and select the translation; Google notes that some steps require Android 7.0 or later. Samsung also documents keyboard translation. The existence of these tools does not guarantee matching language coverage or translation quality, so check that your language pair and specific device are supported.

Gboard’s language switching is useful when you want to type in another language without changing the phone’s system language. That is distinct from translation: switching changes the keyboard’s input language, while translation converts text from one language to another.
Privacy and performance: what the documentation does not settle
Google’s documentation gives a specific privacy description for detailed voice edits: the voice-command transcript and the full text in the input field are sent to Google servers for processing; Google says audio is not sent and text or audio is not stored on its servers. Google describes voice-writing proofreading and rewriting tools as on-device. These statements concern particular voice features and should not be treated as a blanket privacy comparison between Gboard and Samsung Keyboard.

The available official support material does not establish which keyboard types faster or more accurately, nor does it provide a broad comparison of privacy across all functions or battery consumption. If typing feel matters most, try both keyboards on your own phone with the languages and apps you actually use.

How to make the choice on your own phone
- Start with your device. If you use a Galaxy phone, check whether the Samsung Keyboard features you want appear on your model and software. If you use another Android phone, Gboard is the more broadly documented option in the sources covered here.
- Test your language workflow. Try changing keyboard languages, glide typing or voice input as relevant, and keyboard translation for your actual language pair. Support varies by feature and language.
- Confirm AI availability. Check the exact device, Android version, One UI version, and language eligibility before making Writing assist or Pixel voice writing the deciding factor.
- Compare everyday comfort. Type in your usual apps and assess layout, corrections, gestures, and input methods. There is no controlled speed or accuracy comparison here to substitute for personal testing.
