Stats is a free, open-source menu-bar monitor for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. Its documented modules cover CPU, GPU, RAM, disk, sensors, network, battery, Bluetooth and clock information. Examples include memory pressure and swap, disk activity and SMART health, network throughput, battery health and cycle count, and battery levels for connected Bluetooth devices. The project lists macOS 12 (Monterey) or newer as its requirement and says beta macOS releases are unsupported. Check its current requirements before installing.

Important limits: fans, sensors and energy impact
Stats can display fan and sensor information, but its repository explicitly marks fan control as legacy: it receives no updates or fixes and has no ongoing maintainer support. Treat Stats as a monitoring tool, not a dependable fan controller. The maintainer also notes that Sensors and Bluetooth are among the app’s more resource-intensive modules and may materially affect Stats’ energy impact in some cases. That is maintainer guidance, not an independent battery or performance benchmark.
Activity Monitor: the built-in option for troubleshooting
When you want to know what is using resources—or close an unresponsive app—Activity Monitor is the simplest no-install option. Apple documents views for CPU activity, memory use, energy consumption and process details, as well as force-quitting a troublesome process. Open it from Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor, then select a process to inspect it or use the toolbar’s stop control to quit it.

Activity Monitor is a windowed diagnostic utility, not a persistent, customizable menu-bar suite. Choose it for occasional investigation rather than an always-visible iStat-style overview.
Macs Fan Control: for temperatures and fan settings
Macs Fan Control focuses on real-time fan-speed and temperature monitoring. CrystalIDEA says it supports Intel and Apple Silicon Macs and offers either fixed RPM values or sensor-based fan control. Its page says fans return to Auto when the app quits.

This is a narrower thermal tool, not a substitute for iStat Menus’ broader CPU, memory, network, alerts, weather and clock coverage. Manual fan settings can affect cooling behavior; confirm compatibility with your exact Mac and understand the controls before changing them.
Why MenuMeters is a cautious pick for newer Macs
The cited MenuMeters fork describes its target as older macOS releases through Big Sur and recommends newer, actively maintained menu-bar monitors for sufficiently new systems. That makes it a legacy option to investigate for an older Mac, not a default recommendation for a current installation.
