Yes—many old PC role-playing games can be played on modern computers, but compatibility depends on the exact game and edition. A DOS-era game may need DOSBox, while a prepared storefront release or enhanced edition may already include support for newer Windows versions and displays. Check the requirements for the version you intend to use; they do not guarantee that an original disc or installer will work unchanged.
How old PC RPGs run on modern computers
There is no single compatibility rule for every classic RPG. The key distinction is often the edition: an original DOS release, a storefront package configured for modern systems, and an enhanced edition can have different requirements even when they contain the same game.

- DOS-era release: DOSBox emulates a DOS-era PC environment. Its documentation notes that performance depends on the game and the hardware selected for emulation; protected-mode games can demand more. See DOSBox’s FAQ.
- Prepared storefront release: The seller may package the game with DOSBox or other setup changes. GOG, for example, identifies Ultima VII: The Complete Edition as DOSBox-powered and verified for Windows 10 and 11 on its product page.
- Enhanced edition: A newer release may add operating-system support and display options. Steam’s Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition listing describes native widescreen and high-resolution options and gives Windows 7, 8.1, 10, or 11 64-bit as minimum operating-system requirements. Those details apply to that edition, not to every original release; see the Steam listing.
What to check before installing or buying
- Identify the exact edition. Look for whether it is an original release, a storefront package, or an enhanced edition. Do not assume the requirements of one version apply to another.
- Read the current product requirements and support notes. Check the supported Windows versions, hardware requirements, installation guidance, and whether DOSBox or another compatibility layer is included. A listing can establish details only for the edition it describes.
- Compare display support if it matters to you. Look for explicit mention of widescreen or high-resolution options rather than assuming an old game will adapt to a modern monitor.
- Treat original media as a separate case. Compatibility information for a modern re-release does not establish that an original disc or installer will install or run unchanged on your PC.
Windows version and 32-bit games are separate questions
A game’s 32-bit architecture does not by itself mean it cannot run on 64-bit Windows. Steam says 32-bit games continue to run, while its client stopped supporting 32-bit Windows systems on January 1, 2026. Windows 10 64-bit remains supported according to Steam’s client requirements guidance. Check the requirements for the specific game and platform rather than treating game bitness and operating-system bitness as interchangeable.

If a GOG DOSBox release has launch or stability problems
For a GOG release using DOSBox, GOG support suggests trying OpenGL and windowed mode, with a resolution close to your display’s resolution. Follow the instructions for the supported setup in GOG’s DOSBox troubleshooting article. This is a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed fix or a universal remedy for every old RPG.
