Their images can help crews locate hotspots and map fire activity, but a thermal image is not a definitive picture of every burning or burned area: pixels can mix heat from different objects, and clouds, smoke, terrain, and image movement affect what interpreters can see.
How wildfire drones detect and map heat
- Collect aerial data. A drone, or uncrewed aircraft system (UAS), carries a thermal infrared camera, sometimes alongside a visible-light camera. Interagency guidance describes UAS missions for situational awareness, infrared work, and small-area mapping; the platform and flight plan depend on incident needs. See the Interagency Fire UAS Program’s ordering guidance (updated August 25, 2026).
- Read infrared energy. The camera senses energy emitted by objects in its view. As the USDA Forest Service Research and Development Fire Lab puts it, “Thermal imaging cameras observe this transfer of energy.” The image represents patterns in detected energy, not labels that automatically distinguish flame, hot ground, vegetation, or other objects. See the Forest Service’s Thermal Imaging explainer.
- Relate the heat to the terrain. Geolocation and image processing help place heat signatures relative to incident features. NIICD describes trained infrared interpreters using ortho-rectified data with terrain maps to identify hotspots alongside features such as roads, streams, ridges, rocks, and buildings. Its Infrared Branch description explains this interpretation work.
- Use the result to support decisions. Mapped heat can help incident personnel prioritize areas for attention, assess residual heat, and understand activity. The imagery is decision support within coordinated incident operations, not a stand-alone direction to deploy resources.
What a thermal image can show
- Detected heat patterns. Bright or otherwise emphasized regions indicate heat signatures according to the camera’s display settings and processing. A mapped product may distinguish intense, scattered, or isolated heat, helping readers see where detected heat is concentrated.
- Hotspots in geographic context. When imagery is geolocated and interpreted, crews can compare heat signatures with terrain and incident features rather than viewing an unlocated patch of color.
- Change across successive images. A sequence can support analysis of fire-front movement and spread. USGS describes research using image time series to estimate flame spread, intensity, and temperature; those are research outputs, not automatic measurements produced by every drone image. See USGS’s account of the research.
- A different view of some smoke conditions. Smoke may look less dense in thermal infrared than it does to the unaided eye, but thermal imagery does not eliminate weather effects or make all obscured areas visible.
What thermal images do not establish on their own
A complete burned-area boundary
Infrared mapping shows heat the sensor detects; it does not necessarily outline all land that has burned. “Cold black” areas can be difficult to distinguish, especially in fine or light fuels where little detectable heat may remain. The Fire Imaging Technologies User Guide, dated February 12, 2020, describes this limitation.

One true temperature for each pixel
A pixel may combine energy from flame, warm ground, vegetation, and background. It is therefore not automatically a direct temperature reading for one particular object. Estimating an object’s temperature requires additional assumptions and processing, as the Forest Service explains in its thermal imaging overview.

A view through clouds or every kind of obscuration
Clouds are opaque to thermal infrared, much as they are in visible imagery. Cloud cover and fog can inhibit infrared capability and accuracy, according to the Forest Service and the NIFC imaging guide. Conditions matter: a drone’s close vantage does not make thermal imagery equally reliable in all weather.

An automatically stable, map-ready video
Drone movement and fire-generated turbulence can shift raw thermal video, complicating interpretation and georeferencing. Stabilization and careful processing may be needed; a 2021 study examined this problem in aerial monitoring of active wildfires. See Valero et al., “Thermal infrared video stabilization for aerial monitoring of active wildfires”.
How to interpret a drone thermal map
- Ask what the product represents. Is it raw video, a still image, or an ortho-rectified map? The amount of geographic context and processing differs.
- Separate detected heat from inferred fire extent. A heat signature marks energy detected under the flight and sensor conditions; it does not by itself prove the boundary of all burned ground.
- Check the conditions and timing. Clouds, fog, viewing conditions, and the interval between images affect what can be observed and compared.
- Use visible context and trained interpretation. Visible imagery and terrain features can help distinguish what a heat pattern may correspond to, while trained interpreters assess its position and meaning.
- Treat UAS as an incident resource, not a generic gadget. Federal guidance places fire UAS use within coordinated incident operations and appropriate ordering. A product listing alone does not establish that a particular drone, sensor, operator, or flight is suitable for an active incident.
How drones fit alongside other fire imagery
UAS missions are commonly suited to localized situational awareness, infrared work, or small-area mapping. Broader-area aircraft and satellite information serve different scales and purposes. Which is useful depends on the mission, sensor sensitivity and pixel size, need for visible context, weather and time of day, and the processing and interpretation available. The cited guidance does not establish that drones outperform aircraft or satellites for every wildfire task.
