Obsidian community plugins are not sandboxed add-ons. Treat each one as third-party software that may read or change files on your computer, connect to the internet, or install additional programs. Obsidian’s Restricted Mode, directory scanning, policy checks, and manual reviews reduce risk, but they do not provide granular permissions or guarantee that every release is safe. For confidential notes, use a separate vault or device profile where practical, keep recoverable backups, and consider an independent security audit before enabling a plugin.

What “safe” means for an Obsidian community plugin

Safety here is a risk decision, not a binary label. A plugin can be useful and openly maintained while still having the technical ability to access everything Obsidian can access. The practical question is whether the plugin’s capabilities, maintainership, and data handling are appropriate for the vault in which you plan to run it.

Obsidian’s own warning is broad: community plugins can access files on your computer, make network connections, and install additional programs. The application cannot reliably restrict a plugin to a narrow set of permissions or access levels; plugins inherit Obsidian’s access levels. That means a plugin designed for a small convenience may still run with capabilities far beyond the feature you see in its settings.

There is no authoritative figure for how many plugins are malicious or compromised. Plugin behavior can also change from one release to the next. Evaluate the specific plugin and version you intend to use instead of relying on a general claim that the community directory is either “safe” or “unsafe.”

What permissions do community plugins have?

Local files and vault data

A plugin may read, create, modify, move, or delete files that Obsidian can reach. In a normal vault, that includes your Markdown notes and potentially attachments, configuration files, and other material stored in or alongside the vault. A plugin that indexes, renames, exports, synchronizes, or transforms notes may need this access for its stated purpose, but the same capability could expose unrelated content if the code is defective or hostile.

Internet connections

Plugins can open network connections. A feature that calls an external service, fetches data, synchronizes content, or uses an online API may send information outside your device. Read the documentation and source for the destinations, the data sent, authentication handling, and whether network calls occur only after an explicit action or in the background.

Additional programs and processes

Obsidian warns that a plugin can install additional programs. This is a higher-risk behavior because it can extend the code running on your system beyond the plugin package itself. A legitimate tool may document a required command-line utility, but unexplained downloads, installers, subprocesses, or self-updating components deserve a clear explanation before you proceed.

No fine-grained permission prompt

Obsidian does not offer a permission screen that lets you approve file access while denying network access, for example. Turning on a plugin is therefore a trust decision about the plugin’s code and maintainer, not a narrowly scoped consent dialog. If you cannot accept the plugin’s full capability set, do not enable it in a vault containing data you need to protect.

Restricted Mode: the main execution gate

Restricted Mode is enabled by default to prevent third-party community-plugin code from executing. Installing and enabling a community plugin requires you to turn Restricted Mode off in Obsidian’s community-plugin settings. This deliberate opt-in is the strongest built-in barrier against accidentally running unfamiliar code.

You can turn Restricted Mode back on at any time. Installed plugins remain in the vault, but Obsidian ignores them while Restricted Mode is active. This makes Restricted Mode useful for troubleshooting: re-enable it to determine whether a problem disappears without deleting plugin files or settings.

Restricted Mode is not a sandbox for a plugin that is already running. Once you turn it off, the broad access model applies to every enabled community plugin. Use the mode as an execution switch, not as evidence that an enabled plugin has limited permissions.

How the official community directory reduces risk

Automated scanning

Obsidian says it automatically scans every listed plugin version for vulnerabilities, code-quality issues, and malware. The directory displays a safety scorecard so users can see the results associated with a listed release. Scanning is a screening layer: it can identify known patterns and problems, but it cannot prove that a plugin will behave safely in every environment or that a future change will be harmless.

Selective manual review

Obsidian continues manual review for popular, featured, and flagged plugins. This adds human scrutiny where a plugin has greater visibility or has raised a concern. It is not a promise that every line of every release has been audited, nor does it remove the need to inspect a plugin’s purpose and data flows.

Directory policies

Listed plugins must follow rules that provide useful signals. They must not obfuscate code, add dynamic advertisements, include client-side telemetry, or install or update themselves or their dependencies. Obsidian can enforce these rules by removing a plugin from the directory.

Policy compliance is still not a security certification. A plugin can comply with directory rules and contain a vulnerability, mishandle data, or become risky after a change. A plugin installed from outside the directory does not receive these listing controls, so the burden of verification is higher.

Safer installation: a practical checklist

1. Start with the official directory

Prefer a listed plugin when one meets your need. On its directory page, examine the safety scorecard, source repository, release history, and policy status. Treat an unlisted package as a higher-risk exception that requires stronger independent verification.

2. Define the minimum capability you need

Write down the feature you actually require and identify whether a built-in Obsidian function already provides it. Avoid adding third-party code for a task that can be completed with core features. When you do need a plugin, choose the one whose documented behavior is closest to that narrow requirement.

3. Read the documentation before enabling it

Look specifically for statements about:

  • Reading or writing files outside the vault.
  • Network calls, external services, API keys, or cloud processing.
  • Telemetry, analytics, crash reporting, or usage metrics.
  • Subprocesses, command-line tools, installers, or downloaded components.
  • Background tasks that run without an explicit command.

A broad capability can be justified, but the plugin should explain why it is necessary, what data leaves the device, and how to disable optional services.

4. Inspect the repository and maintainer signals

Check whether the source is available and readable, whether published releases correspond to committed code, and whether the project has a clear license and build process. Review recent issues for reports of unexplained network behavior, data loss, suspicious downloads, or security regressions. Look for a maintainer who responds to reports and publishes understandable changelogs. A repository that is abandoned, opaque, or difficult to reproduce deserves more caution than one with active, transparent maintenance.

5. Isolate sensitive work

For confidential, regulated, or irreplaceable notes, use a separate vault or device profile when practical. Keep a reliable backup that you can restore without relying on the plugin under evaluation. Isolation limits the amount of information exposed if the plugin is compromised and makes recovery easier if it changes or damages files.

6. Install the minimum set and disable what you do not use

Every enabled plugin adds code that can run in your vault. Remove plugins you no longer need, and disable optional features that require external services or broad file operations. Do not assume an unused plugin is harmless merely because you are not clicking its commands.

7. Review every update

Community plugins do not update automatically. Before installing a new release, read its changelog, inspect meaningful source changes, and check whether the maintainer or repository has changed. Pay particular attention to new network calls, added dependencies, permission-expanding features, or changes in ownership. Delay an update when its behavior is unclear; a working older version is not a reason to accept an unexplained change.

How to compare two plugins that solve the same problem

Criterion What to examine Why it matters
Capability scope Local file access, network access, subprocesses, installers, and background jobs Broader capabilities increase the possible impact of a bug or compromise.
Transparency Readable source, clear license, documented data flows, and understandable build process You can verify what the plugin claims to do and identify unexplained behavior.
Maintenance Recent releases, responsive issue handling, and clear changelogs Active maintenance improves the chance that vulnerabilities are noticed and fixed.
Directory signals Official listing, scanner results, safety scorecard, and policy compliance These provide screening information, although they are not a guarantee.
Data sensitivity Whether the plugin will touch confidential, regulated, or irreplaceable notes The more sensitive the data, the stronger your isolation and review requirements should be.
Failure and recovery Backup support, reversible settings, and how easily the plugin can be disabled A reversible design limits damage when a plugin fails or behaves unexpectedly.

When an independent audit is warranted

Obsidian explicitly recommends an independent security audit before using a community plugin with sensitive data. That recommendation is especially important when the vault contains personal identity information, business secrets, regulated records, client material, credentials, or notes whose disclosure would cause serious harm. An audit should examine the exact version you plan to run, its dependencies, build process, network destinations, and file-handling behavior.

If a formal audit is not practical, use compensating controls: isolate the sensitive vault, run only the minimum plugins, maintain offline or versioned backups, and avoid plugins whose purpose requires unexplained uploads or installers. These steps reduce exposure but do not provide the assurance of an independent review.

What to do if a plugin behaves suspiciously

  1. Turn Restricted Mode back on to stop community-plugin execution while leaving installed files in place.
  2. Disconnect the device from networks if you suspect data is being exfiltrated, while preserving logs or other evidence you may need.
  3. Restore the vault from a known-good backup if files were changed, deleted, or corrupted.
  4. Read the plugin author’s security.md or README instructions and report the behavior with reproducible details.
  5. Contact Obsidian support for critical flaws. A suspected malicious plugin can also be flagged from its directory page or reported to Obsidian.
  6. Rotate credentials or API keys that the plugin could have accessed, and review external-service logs when applicable.

Do not simply delete the plugin and assume the incident is over if it installed another program, copied data elsewhere, or exposed credentials. Investigate the broader system and restore from trusted backups.

A decision framework for everyday use

Low-sensitivity personal notes

A listed plugin with a clear purpose, readable source, active maintenance, and no unexplained network or installer behavior may be a reasonable choice. Keep backups and review updates rather than enabling it permanently without oversight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Work or confidential notes

Prefer core Obsidian features or a tightly scoped plugin, isolate the vault, and require documented data flows. Obtain an independent audit when the consequences of disclosure justify the cost.

Irreplaceable research or archival material

Prioritize reversibility: maintain versioned backups, test a plugin on a copy of the vault, and confirm that disabling it leaves your notes usable. Avoid introducing a plugin that can silently rewrite large portions of the vault unless you can roll back those changes.

The bottom line

Obsidian community plugins can be used responsibly, but they are not inherently safe or sandboxed. The official directory’s scanning, scorecards, policy enforcement, and selective manual review are valuable filters; Restricted Mode gives you an explicit opt-in gate. Neither control replaces examining the plugin’s capabilities, source, maintenance, release changes, and fit for the data in your vault. Treat each plugin as software you are granting broad trust, and raise your review and isolation standards as the sensitivity of your notes increases.
