Nerf blasters can be used indoors only when the specific blaster’s instructions, eye-protection guidance, age label, and the room’s conditions make play appropriate. They are not risk-free: never aim at anyone’s eyes or face, protect players and people within range as the manual directs, and stop if the space or participants cannot be kept under control.
Are Nerf blasters safe for indoor play?
There is no universal room-size rule or guarantee that a room is safe for Nerf play. Hasbro’s warnings and general toy-safety guidance from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) point to a conditional decision: follow the exact blaster’s manual, consider the available play space and surroundings, and keep play controlled.

The instructions differ even among Nerf models. Hasbro’s cited standard-blaster instructions recommend eyewear for players and people within range. The Nerf Pro Sender instructions require it. Check the instructions and age label for the model you actually have rather than treating one warning as a brand-wide rule.
Do you need eye protection for Nerf?
Follow the eyewear warning in the specific blaster’s instructions, including for people within range. Hasbro’s standard Nerf Double Punch instructions say eyewear is recommended; its Nerf Pro Sender instructions say eyewear is always required. The Pro Sender page identifies its included protective eyewear as compliant with ANSI Z87.1+ and EN 166. Those statements apply to the cited models, not automatically to every blaster or pair of glasses.
#1 Best Overall
- Material: ABS plastic.
- Protect your eyes and face from foam gun and blasters.
- With adjustable elastic band and comfortable foam liners on the frame, and also can be used with helmet.
- Streamlined design can minimize wind resistance and provide better wind-proof effect.
- Transparent lenses give you a clear view and increases safety during a heated game.
Do not assume ordinary glasses or unverified toy goggles meet a protective standard. If you choose separate protective eyewear, check its stated rating and fit. The clearest rules in both cited Hasbro warnings are: do not aim at eyes or faces, use only the darts specified for that model, and do not modify the blaster or darts.
What rules should we set for Nerf indoors?
Hasbro’s warnings provide the essential boundaries; household rules can make them practical. The following setup suggestions are practical precautions, not manufacturer-prescribed distances or a guarantee of safety.

- Never aim at eyes or faces. Make this a rule for every player and stop play if someone breaks it.
- Use only the specified darts. Standard-blaster instructions call for official Nerf darts; Nerf Pro Sender instructions call for official Nerf Pro darts. Do not modify darts or the blaster.
- Agree on a stop signal. Anyone should be able to pause play immediately.
- Keep nonparticipants and pets out of the play area and line of fire. Hasbro’s eyewear warnings include people within range, not just players.
- End play if the rules cannot be followed. A blaster should not be fired at people who are not participating.
How do you decide whether a room is suitable?
CPSC advises considering the surroundings and available play space, checking toys for breakage, keeping younger children away from toys intended for older children, and putting toys away to prevent trips and falls. It does not set a minimum room size, wall distance, or Nerf-specific layout.

- SIZED FOR YOUNGER FACES (FRAME ABOUT 5 IN WIDE, 4.75 IN ARMS): A true youth and pre-teen fit that sits best on smaller faces. These run small, so for an older or larger-faced child we recommend sizing up to a full youth or adult model for the most comfortable fit.
- ANSI Z87.1 AND EN166 CERTIFIED: Independently rated impact-resistant eye protection that meets recognized U.S. (ANSI Z87.1) and European (EN166) safety standards, giving kids real protection for science labs, STEM classes, woodworking, and home projects.
- VALUE 6-PACK: Six pairs in one box, ideal for classrooms, science kits, group activities, siblings, or simply keeping clean spares on hand so there is always a pair ready to grab.
- CLEAR ANTI-SCRATCH LENS WITH WRAP COVERAGE: Distortion-free clear lenses with a scratch-resistant coating give a wide, unobstructed view, while the wraparound shape adds side coverage against dust, debris, and splashes.
- LIGHTWEIGHT AND COMFORTABLE: Smooth, lightweight frames are made for all-day classroom and project wear, encouraging kids to actually keep them on.
Check the model’s age label and instructions
Age guidance varies by model. Hasbro’s cited Double Punch example is labeled ages 8 and up; Nerf Pro Sender is labeled ages 14 and up. These are examples, not ratings for all Nerf products. CPSC recommends following the age guidance for the individual toy and considering younger children in the home.

What injury evidence can—and can’t—tell you
An American Academy of Pediatrics study published in 2018 examined eye injuries associated with nonpowder guns broadly. It reported a 168.8% increase in the rate of such eye injuries over the study period and found that 48.5% of hospitalizations in its dataset were associated with nonpowder guns. Among the reported injury types, corneal abrasion accounted for 27.1%, conjunctivitis 10.0%, and foreign bodies in the eye 8.5%. These are study-specific findings, not Nerf injury rates or a measure of the risk from indoor Nerf play.
The CPSC’s 2024 recall notice about a different projectile toy described an eye-injury hazard after that product failed federal projectile-toy safety requirements. It is not evidence about Nerf blasters, but it is a reason not to assume a projectile toy or its included goggles are safe without checking the actual product and its instructions.
