GTA, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Watch Dogs approach law enforcement from different angles: GTA frames a chase as action escalation, RDR2 makes the aftermath of a crime more consequential, and Watch Dogs puts hacking at the center of its world. The clearest documented contrast is RDR2’s witness-to-bounty sequence. Exact, directly comparable police rules for GTA V and Watch Dogs are less firmly established, so this comparison keeps those claims broad rather than treating every game in each series as identical.
What a police chase system has to do
A pursuit is more than the moment police start following a player. It can involve an initial report, identification, an active search, escape from immediate danger, and consequences that persist after the player gets away. Comparing games across those stages helps explain their different design priorities without claiming that their rules are interchangeable.

GTA: treat the installment as part of the comparison
“GTA” covers multiple games, so a claim about one installment should not automatically be applied to the series as a whole. The material available for this comparison does not verify a detailed, matched account of GTA V’s wanted levels, search behavior, or escape rules. It is therefore safer to describe GTA’s familiar wanted-level chase as an action-escalation framing, rather than assign exact stages or mechanics to every entry.
There is newer, installment-specific reporting about GTA VI, but it is not evidence for GTA V. GamesRadar+ reported on August 27, 2026, that Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson described a system in which a crime must be witnessed or trigger an alarm to be reported, with recognition indicators that can include clothing and a vehicle. The report also describes switching vehicles or escaping on foot as possible tactics. Those are GTA VI details, not rules to transfer to GTA V or the entire series. Red Dead Redemption 2: witnesses, wanted status, and bounty
RDR2’s law response is documented in more distinct stages. The RDR2.org guide describes crimes drawing attention from witnesses, who may report them; lawmen can then investigate and identify the player. The guide also says lawmen may investigate a crime scene even when no witness report has been made. If the player is identified, the situation can escalate to wanted status and a bounty.
That structure makes the escape more than a single reset. In the guide’s account, leaving the marked search area is not enough by itself: lawmen must lose sight of the player and the wanted meter must empty for the immediate status to clear. A bounty can still matter later, including through bounty hunters. These mechanics are described by a fan-maintained guide, not a formal Rockstar system specification.

Rockstar’s official Red Dead Redemption Essentials Manual offers a related description for the earlier Red Dead Redemption, not RDR2. It says: “You will remain Wanted as long as lawmen or civilians can see you. You can lose your Wanted Level by breaking their line of sight and hiding from the law.” It also warns: “Even if you manage to evade the law posses, deadly bounty hunters will come after you.” The manual says a bounty in that older game can be paid at a local Telegraph office or cleared with pardon letters. These lines are useful historical context, but they should not be mistaken for an official explanation of RDR2’s exact rules.

Ubisoft’s official Watch Dogs page describes Aiden Pearce as a hacker who can manipulate city systems, including traffic lights and the electrical grid; the game is set in Chicago and lists a May 27, 2014 release date. Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs 2 page describes Marcus Holloway, DedSec, ctOS 2.0, and the San Francisco Bay Area, and lists a November 13, 2016 release date.

Those publisher descriptions explain why pursuit in Watch Dogs invites a technology-and-city-systems interpretation: the player’s role is built around hacking connected infrastructure. They do not establish exact police AI, dispatch triggers, search areas, cooldowns, or escape rules. The distinction matters: a strong setting premise is not the same as documented proof that a specific hack interrupts a particular police behavior.

On the evidence available, RDR2 offers the clearest account of pursuit as a chain from crime and investigation to identification, escape, and possible later pressure from a bounty. GTA’s familiar wanted-level framing is more directly about escalating action, but precise GTA V mechanics cannot be fairly set against RDR2’s documented stages here. Watch Dogs stands apart in premise because hacking city systems is central to its identity, while exact chase outcomes are not established by the official descriptions cited above.

That makes “which is more realistic?” or “which is best?” a poor shortcut unless the criterion is specified. RDR2 is the most detailed of these three in the documented connection between witnesses, identification, and post-escape consequences. Watch Dogs has the clearest technology-based environmental premise. The sources here do not support a definitive ranking of police AI or chase difficulty across all three.
