Are Motorcycle Smart Accessories Waterproof? IP Ratings, Rain Protection and Safe Cleaning

Some motorcycle GPS units, intercoms and smart displays are built for rain, but “waterproof” is not a universal category guarantee. Check the exact model’s complete IP code and manual: IPX5 and IPX6 describe water-jet resistance, IPX7 describes temporary immersion, and IPX8 describes continuous immersion under manufacturer-defined conditions. None of those ratings automatically authorizes pressure-washing.

What an IP rating actually tells you

An IP code describes a tested enclosure, not every way a rider might expose an accessory to water. The first character addresses protection against solids such as dust. A number from 0 to 6 gives a dust or object-protection level; an “X” means that the manufacturer has not stated a solids-protection level in that code. The second character addresses water.

Water classes are not a ladder in which every higher-looking number covers all lower-numbered exposures. Jet tests and immersion tests use different conditions. The European Commission Joint Research Centre’s 2024 IEC-derived guidance separates these exposures, so an immersion rating should not be read as approval for a concentrated jet.

Water code Exposure represented What it does not establish
IPX5 Water jets from defined directions and flow conditions Protection against immersion
IPX6 More powerful water jets than IPX5 Protection against immersion or pressure-washer impact
IPX7 Temporary immersion under the specified test conditions Resistance to powerful jets, rotating spray, or every installation condition
IPX8 Continuous immersion under conditions set by the manufacturer A universal depth, duration, jet rating, or permission to wash the unit
IPX9 or a combined code A separate high-pressure/high-temperature spray exposure where claimed That an accessory with another code has passed this test

Sony’s current support guidance, accessed in 2026, explains IPX7 as immersion in up to 1 metre of water for 30 minutes under controlled conditions. That is a laboratory test with a defined setup, not a promise that a mounted device can withstand every real-world blast. A rating also assumes the enclosure, gasket, buttons, port covers and cable entries remain in the condition used for testing.

Examples from motorcycle accessories

Published specifications show why the exact model matters more than the accessory category. The following examples are manufacturer claims, not an independent durability ranking.

Product Published protection Intended use Important limitation
Interphone SYNC70 IP66; anti-rain touch behavior GPS, tire-pressure monitoring and dual-camera smart display IP66 addresses powerful jets; it does not by itself establish immersion protection.
Interphone U-COM 2R IP67 Helmet intercom with phone/GPS audio IP67 is temporary immersion under test conditions. Ports, seals and the housing must remain intact.
BMW Motorrad Navigator V IPX7; waterproof 12-volt plug connection Dedicated motorcycle navigation IPX7 is not a pressure-wash rating. The cradle and plug still need inspection.
Dainese Smart GO No liquid exposure permitted in its FAQ Wearable safety electronics It must not be submerged, washed under running water or intentionally exposed to liquids.

Interphone states that the U-COM 2R is IP67 certified for rain, dust and harsh weather. Its current product information also lists communication range up to 300 metres and talk time up to 30 hours; those figures describe communication and battery performance, not water resistance. BMW Motorrad says its ConnectedRide Com P1 can be used in bad weather, including snow, rain and enduro mud, while separately warning that the charging socket must be firmly closed during rain. These statements illustrate a key distinction: a system may be designed for wet riding while a particular port or accessory connection remains a critical entry point.

Which rating do you need for your riding?

Routine rain and wet roads

For normal road rain, choose a model whose manufacturer explicitly describes weather use and publishes at least a relevant jet or immersion test. IPX5 or IPX6 is evidence about jets; IPX7 adds a temporary-immersion test. Neither replaces the manual’s instructions for mounting, charging and cleaning.

Heavy storms, spray and off-road mud

Look beyond the headline IP number. A forward-facing display can receive road spray, while a helmet intercom may be shielded by the helmet shell. Mud can hold water against a seal and can contaminate a connector after the ride. Confirm that the mount, cradle, cable gland and charging arrangement are covered by the same instructions as the main housing.

Accidental drops into water

An IPX7 claim is relevant to a short accidental immersion only within its stated test conditions. Recover the unit, follow the manual’s shutdown and drying instructions, and do not assume that a successful drop test makes the device safe to charge while wet.

Cleaning the motorcycle

Do not infer washing permission from an IP rating. Aoocci specifically warns against directing concentrated jets at displays, connectors or seals. A garden hose or pressure washer can apply a focused force that differs from the product’s certification test and can drive water past a damaged gasket.

Seven checks before every wet ride

  1. Verify the exact model. Read the rating printed in the manual or specification page for the installed unit, not a similar model in the same product family. Note whether the code is IP66, IP67, IPX7 or another class.
  2. Close every opening. Seat charging flaps, rubber plugs, memory-card covers and connector caps fully. BMW’s rain guidance for the ConnectedRide Com U1 specifically says the charging socket must be firmly closed so water cannot enter.
  3. Inspect the enclosure. Look for cracks, lifted screen edges, missing screws, loose gaskets and distorted covers. A certification assumes an intact enclosure.
  4. Check the mount and cradle. Confirm that the accessory is locked into its mount and that any waterproof plug or 12-volt connection is fully seated. A gap at the cradle can expose contacts even when the main housing is rated.
  5. Route cables for drainage. Use the supplied seals and strain reliefs. Arrange each cable with a small downward loop before the connector so water cannot run along the cable directly into the socket.
  6. Secure microphones and vents. Keep microphone openings, speaker ports and ventilation paths oriented as the manual shows. Do not cover a vent with tape or an improvised film that can trap condensation.
  7. Confirm charging status. Finish charging before departure when possible. If a connector is damp, keep it disconnected until both plug and socket are dry.

How to use an accessory while it is raining

Stay within the exposure the manufacturer actually tested. Rain falling on a sealed display is a different event from a jet aimed at its edge. Keep the device mounted as designed, avoid repeatedly opening a port during the ride, and do not operate a loose or cracked unit on the assumption that its original IP rating still applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Touch behavior can change in rain even when the enclosure remains sealed. The SYNC70 specification mentions anti-rain touch behavior, but that feature does not make an uncovered connector safe. Use physical controls or voice functions where the manual provides them, and keep gloves, grit and standing water from dragging across the screen.

If a warning appears, the screen flickers, audio cuts out, or a button begins sticking, stop exposing the unit to water when it is safe to do so. Power down according to the manual rather than repeatedly pressing controls or connecting a charger to test whether it still works.

What to do after a wet ride

  1. Park in a dry place before opening anything. Opening a port cover while droplets are present can move water directly into the connector.
  2. Power down if instructed. Some manuals specify shutdown after liquid exposure. Follow that model-specific instruction instead of keeping the unit energized to “dry it out.”
  3. Wipe the exterior. Use a clean, soft cloth. Remove grit around seals without pushing debris into a gap.
  4. Let trapped moisture escape naturally. Once the outside is dry, open covers only in a dry environment and allow ventilation. Do not use a heat gun, hair dryer on high heat, oven or direct exhaust heat; concentrated heat can deform seals and housings.
  5. Delay charging. Do not charge until the plug, socket and surrounding seal are completely dry. Charging can introduce electrical faults or corrosion when moisture remains.
  6. Inspect again after drying. Look for fogging behind a lens, residue around a port, corrosion, a loose gasket or intermittent operation. Persistent condensation means the enclosure may no longer be sealed and needs manufacturer service.

Why condensation matters

Rain is not the only source of moisture. A warm device taken into cold, humid air can develop condensation inside or around a connector. Rapid temperature changes, sealed bags and storage in a damp pannier can make this worse. Store equipment in a dry, ventilated place, leave removable covers in the position specified by the manual while it dries, and avoid sealing a wet unit in an airtight case.

Fogging behind a screen or lens is a practical sign that moisture has reached an area the user cannot dry by wiping. Stop charging and operating the unit, document the condition, and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service channel for instructions.

Pressure-washing and cleaning rules

Pressure washers create a concentrated, high-speed stream that can force water past a button, speaker grille, charging flap or cable seal. The correct practice is simple:

  • Never aim a pressure washer at a display, connector, microphone opening, mount joint or gasket.
  • Do not hold a hose nozzle close to an IP-rated accessory in an attempt to “test” it.
  • Clean mud with a damp, soft cloth or the method explicitly allowed in the manual.
  • Keep the motorcycle’s high-pressure wash directed away from installed electronics; remove the accessory first when the manual permits removal.
  • After any permitted rinse, dry the unit and connectors before storage or charging.

An IP code is evidence from a defined test, not a cleaning specification. The manual’s cleaning section controls when it is more restrictive than the rating.

Protecting accessories with weak or no liquid resistance

Some electronics are not liquid-safe at all. Dainese says Smart GO must not be submerged, washed under running water or intentionally exposed to liquids because water can irreversibly damage its electronic components. For a system in this category, use a rain layer over the non-waterproof garment, position the module under that layer, and keep it in a dry, ventilated place after use. Do not treat a protective cover as proof that the module itself is waterproof; the cover must prevent water from reaching the device during the entire ride.

For any non-rated unit, protect the cable path as carefully as the housing. Place connectors under a sheltered section of the motorcycle, use only manufacturer-supplied seals, and avoid pockets or bags that collect water. If the manual prohibits liquid exposure, do not rinse the accessory even after a muddy ride.

How to compare two accessories beyond the headline number

Comparison point Questions to ask Why it affects real use
Water test class Is the claim about jets, temporary immersion, continuous immersion or a separate spray test? Different tests represent different exposures; one does not automatically substitute for another.
Dust protection Is the first IP digit stated, or is it “X”? Dust protection can matter on gravel roads and around moving seals.
Charging and connectors Are ports covered, sealed, detachable or permanently exposed? Ports and cable glands are common practical weak points.
Mount and gasket design Does the cradle have its own seal, and can vibration loosen it? The accessory may be rated while the installed connection is not equally protected.
Vibration and temperature limits Does the manual state operating limits for motorcycle mounting? Heat, vibration and movement can damage seals even without a rain event.
Cleaning permission Does the manual allow rinsing, and at what distance or pressure? An IP claim alone does not authorize a pressure washer.
Warranty exclusions Does the warranty exclude liquid damage or damage from an opened housing? A rating does not guarantee a free repair after misuse or seal damage.

Symptoms of possible water ingress

Symptom Immediate action What to avoid
Fogging behind a screen or lens Power down, disconnect power and let the unit dry in a dry place; seek service if fogging persists. Do not heat the housing aggressively or keep charging it.
Intermittent audio, touch or buttons after rain Stop exposure, wipe the exterior and follow the manual’s drying procedure. Do not repeatedly reconnect the charger to test it.
Corrosion or residue at a connector Leave the connector disconnected and obtain model-specific service advice. Do not scrape contacts with metal tools or spray unapproved cleaners.
Loose, cracked or missing seal Replace the seal or have the unit serviced before the next wet ride. Do not rely on the original IP rating with a damaged enclosure.

What the ratings cannot tell you

There is no independent cross-brand failure-rate statistic or controlled long-term durability study establishing which motorcycle accessory is most reliable in rain. Published IP codes and manufacturer instructions are therefore the appropriate basis for a purchase or setup decision, not a claim that one brand will fail less often than another.

Water protection can also change over time. Drops, vibration, ultraviolet exposure, solvents, repeated opening of port covers and incorrect assembly can reduce sealing performance. Recheck the housing and connectors at the start of the wet season and after any crash, repair or mount change.

A practical decision rule

  • Rain-rated display or intercom: Use it in rain only as mounted and sealed in the manual; treat the stated IP class as the boundary of tested exposure.
  • IPX7 unit: Accept the temporary-immersion claim under its specified conditions, but do not convert it into a jet or pressure-wash claim.
  • IP66 unit: Use the jet-resistance claim as stated, while recognizing that immersion protection is not established by IP66 alone.
  • No liquid rating or an explicit liquid prohibition: Keep the module dry with a suitable rain layer and sheltered placement; do not rinse it.
  • Any damaged seal, cracked housing or wet connector: Stop, dry and repair before continued use.
