Methane burned with liquid oxygen (LOX) generally produces far less soot than kerosene (RP-1), which can improve combustion hardware and make repeated flights easier to service. A methane rocket still emits carbon dioxide, water vapor, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides, while methane leaks during production and transport can add substantial climate impact. Exhaust released high in the atmosphere also behaves differently from exhaust at ground level. The defensible answer is conditional: methane has a real combustion and reusability advantage, but only a full life-cycle and atmospheric analysis can show whether a particular launch system is cleaner overall.
What “cleaner” means for a rocket
Rocket propellants cannot be ranked with one emissions number. A useful comparison separates at least six questions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- How much soot or black carbon is formed per kilogram of propellant and per delivered payload?
- How much carbon dioxide is produced during combustion?
- What emissions occur before launch when the fuel is extracted, processed, liquefied and transported?
- What water vapor, nitrogen oxides and particles are injected into the upper atmosphere?
- How does the fuel affect engine deposits, inspections, refurbishment and the number of flights a vehicle can perform?
- What is the life-cycle result after manufacturing, launch operations, recovery and retirement are counted?
Methane performs well on the soot and hardware questions. It does not eliminate greenhouse-gas emissions, and its upstream leakage can change the result. The vehicle, engine cycle, trajectory, payload and launch cadence can matter as much as the fuel name.

Methane is the main component of natural gas. Rocket-grade kerosene, commonly called RP-1, is a refined hydrocarbon mixture containing heavier molecules. Both are normally burned with liquid oxygen. Their exhaust therefore contains several products rather than a single pollutant.

| Question | Methane/LOX | Kerosene (RP-1)/LOX |
|---|---|---|
| Soot and black carbon | Generally lower because the simpler, lighter fuel tends to burn more completely | Higher soot tendency; black carbon is a central uncertainty in climate calculations |
| Main combustion products | Carbon dioxide, water vapor, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, unburned methane, nitrogen oxides and oxygen can appear in the plume | Water vapor, nitrogen and hydrogen oxides, soot (carbon) and sulfur compounds can occur; NASA’s Mars 2020 statement lists sulfuric acid among modeled products |
| Coking and deposits | Lower coking tendency in fuel-cooled passages and injectors | More prone to carbon deposits, depending on engine design and operating conditions |
| Upstream supply risk | Methane leakage during production and distribution can add a potent greenhouse gas | Oil extraction, refining and transport create their own emissions and ecological impacts |
| Overall climate result | Not established as universally superior; depends on leakage, efficiency, altitude effects and black-carbon output | Not universally worse; vehicle efficiency, reuse and actual soot output determine the comparison |
NASA’s environmental assessment for a LOX/methane vehicle identifies water vapor, carbon dioxide (CO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen, methane, nitrogen oxides (NOx) and oxygen in the plume. That list is a reminder that “methane” does not mean emission-free.
Why methane produces less soot
Soot is made of carbon-rich particles formed when parts of a fuel-rich flame do not oxidize completely. Kerosene contains larger hydrocarbon molecules that can break down into soot precursors under the high pressure and temperature inside a rocket chamber. Methane’s simpler molecule has fewer pathways to those heavy intermediates, so a well-designed methane engine generally emits less visible smoke and black carbon.
The European Space Agency describes its Prometheus methane engine this way: “It reaches higher performance than kerosene and avoids issues linked to soot in reusable engines.” The statement refers both to combustion performance and to the maintenance burden created by deposits. It is not a claim that every methane engine has zero soot. Injector design, mixture ratio, chamber pressure, start-up and shutdown transients can still produce particles.

Black carbon absorbs sunlight and can warm the atmosphere. A launch vehicle places some of its exhaust in the stratosphere and upper troposphere, where particles can persist longer and interact with ozone, radiation and atmospheric circulation. The altitude and latitude of injection, particle size and season all influence the effect.

NASA GISS/AIAA simulations published in 2024 found black carbon to be “the most influential component” in their modeled climate effects. The authors also warned that liquefied-natural-gas-fueled rockets could still raise aerosol concerns despite burning more efficiently than conventional fuels. Their conclusion was not that methane is worse in every case; it was that actual black-carbon emission rates from rocket engines remain important enough to determine the answer.
Carbon dioxide: cleaner combustion is not zero carbon
When methane burns completely with oxygen, each carbon atom becomes CO₂. Kerosene does the same. Per kilogram of fuel, methane contains less carbon than kerosene, but the comparison must use the complete propellant load and the payload delivered to orbit. A methane engine may obtain a higher specific impulse, allowing a vehicle to carry less propellant for a given mission. A kerosene vehicle may have a different structural mass, tank volume or staging arrangement. Those vehicle-level effects can outweigh a simple fuel-per-kilogram calculation.
Incomplete combustion creates carbon monoxide and unburned methane. NASA’s Starship assessment says most CO from its LOX/methane engines is expected to oxidize to CO₂ in plume afterburn. It also modeled brief, near-ground exposure as unlikely to approach air-quality standards at the evaluated site. Those are site-specific modeled conclusions, not a universal result for every methane rocket, launch pad or weather condition.

The methane-leakage problem begins before launch
Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas when it escapes without being burned. Leakage can occur at wells, processing plants, liquefaction facilities, pipelines, storage tanks and loading operations. The climate impact depends on the leakage rate, the time horizon used to compare methane with CO₂, the fuel’s origin and whether the propellant is made from fossil natural gas, biogenic methane or synthetic sources.

The European Space Agency notes that methane’s production impact depends on its source and that leakage can be harmful to the climate. ESA recommends a detailed life-cycle analysis rather than judging the fuel only by its exhaust. A methane vehicle supplied with tightly controlled, low-leakage fuel can have a different result from an identical vehicle supplied through a leaky gas system.
Why a “green methane” label is not enough
Renewable or synthetic methane can reduce fossil extraction, but it still requires energy, equipment and transport. Producing it with low-carbon electricity may lower upstream CO₂; producing it with carbon-intensive power may not. Biogenic methane can have different accounting rules depending on the feedstock and whether otherwise escaping methane is captured. Without measured leakage and a defined system boundary, the label alone cannot establish a climate advantage.
What happens high in the atmosphere
Rocket exhaust is unusual because it is released rapidly at altitude rather than gradually near the surface. Water vapor can form ice particles and influence high-altitude chemistry. NOx and other reactive species can participate in ozone-related reactions. Black carbon and other aerosols can absorb radiation, alter heating rates and provide surfaces for chemical reactions.
A 2024 inventory by Brown and colleagues estimated that worldwide rocket launches in 2019 injected, in the 15–50 kilometer layer, approximately 5.82 gigagrams (Gg) of CO₂, 6.38 Gg of H₂O, 0.28 Gg of black carbon, 0.22 Gg of NOx, 0.50 Gg of reactive chlorine and 0.91 Gg of particulate alumina. Those figures describe the global launch inventory for that year, not a controlled methane-versus-kerosene test. They provide scale and show why species other than CO₂ matter.

NASA’s historical reviews have generally found local and regional effects more significant than global effects under the scenarios studied. Newer modeling emphasizes that stratospheric aerosol behavior and chemistry remain uncertain, especially as launch rates rise. A small contribution to global greenhouse-gas totals can still be scientifically important because it is injected into a sensitive part of the atmosphere.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Engine cleanliness and reusability
The strongest practical case for methane is often operational rather than atmospheric. Kerosene can leave carbon deposits in injectors, cooling channels, turbopumps and combustion chambers. Deposits can restrict flow, change spray patterns, reduce cooling margins and increase inspection or refurbishment work. Methane’s lower coking tendency helps an engine remain within its design condition across repeated starts.
That advantage can reduce the material and energy burden per delivered kilogram of payload if a methane-powered stage is actually reflown many times. Manufacturing a replacement engine or stage has an environmental cost, so longer hardware life can matter in a life-cycle assessment. Reusability is not automatic, however. A reusable methane vehicle still consumes propellant, replacement parts, ground energy and recovery hardware, and a complex vehicle may require extensive refurbishment even with clean-burning fuel.

When kerosene may still be competitive
Kerosene engines are mature, widely characterized and can be highly efficient. A vehicle that launches infrequently, uses an optimized expendable stage or delivers more payload with a simpler architecture may have a lower impact per mission than a less mature methane system. The fair comparison is between complete launch systems performing the same mission, not between isolated fuel properties.

Launch-rate scenarios show why scale matters
NASA GISS/AIAA simulations examined illustrative 2050 heavy-lift scenarios of 1,000 launches per year and 10,000 launches per year, with each launch delivering 80 tonnes to low Earth orbit. These are scenarios, not forecasts or measurements of an operating fleet. Their purpose was to test how atmospheric effects could grow if launch activity expanded dramatically.
At present, the global launch sector’s total greenhouse-gas contribution is small compared with major terrestrial sectors. That does not make rocket emissions irrelevant: the altitude, chemical mix and concentration of exhaust create effects that ordinary carbon inventories can miss. As cadence increases, black-carbon measurements, plume sampling and validated atmospheric models become more important than broad assumptions about one fuel being “clean.”
How to compare two launch vehicles fairly
Use the following sequence when a company or agency claims that a methane rocket is greener:
- Define the mission. Compare the same payload, orbit, inclination, launch site and recovery plan.
- Measure propellant use. Record methane, LOX and kerosene loads, residuals and any propellant dumped during detanking or landing.
- Characterize the plume. Use engine-specific measurements or validated models for CO₂, water, CO, unburned methane, NOx, soot and particle size across start-up, steady operation and shutdown.
- Account for altitude. Separate emissions deposited in the lower atmosphere from those injected into the stratosphere, and model season, latitude and trajectory.
- Trace the fuel supply. Include extraction or synthesis, processing, liquefaction, transport, storage and measured methane leakage.
- Include hardware life. Allocate manufacturing, inspections, refurbishment, replacement engines, recovery operations and the number of successful flights.
- Report uncertainty. Show ranges for black-carbon emissions, leakage and atmospheric forcing instead of presenting a single precise score that the evidence cannot support.
This method prevents a low-soot exhaust result from being mistaken for a complete environmental verdict.
What the available evidence can and cannot establish
The evidence supports several firm, limited conclusions:
- Methane/LOX generally forms less soot and reduces coking concerns compared with kerosene/RP-1.
- Methane exhaust still contains CO₂, water vapor, CO, methane and NOx, among other constituents.
- Black carbon can dominate modeled climate effects, so actual engine measurements are crucial.
- Methane leakage and fuel source can erase part of the combustion advantage.
- Rocket launches have a small global footprint relative to major terrestrial sectors, but their high-altitude injection creates unusual atmospheric effects.
No cited source establishes one universal numerical life-cycle advantage for methane across all rockets. Engine cycle, mixture ratio, thrust level, trajectory, payload, stage reuse and cadence can change the result. The strongest general statement is therefore conditional rather than absolute.
Bottom line
Methane-fueled rockets are cleaner than kerosene rockets in the narrow sense that matters for soot, black carbon and engine coking: they usually burn with fewer carbon particles and can be easier to reuse. They are not automatically cleaner for climate or the atmosphere as a whole. Methane leakage, fuel production, CO₂, water vapor, NOx and high-altitude aerosols must be counted, and black-carbon emissions remain a major uncertainty. A specific methane launch system deserves a full life-cycle and atmospheric assessment before it is described as environmentally superior.
