Are Local AI Agents Private? What They Store, Access, and Send

Local inference can keep model computation on your device, but an AI agent may still access files, save logs, or send data through fallbacks and integrations. Check its permissions, storage, and network routes.

Sometimes, but “local” alone does not guarantee privacy. A local model may process a prompt on your device while its agent can still read files, use connected accounts, save transcripts, or send information to hosted services. To judge privacy, check the model route, the agent’s permissions, its saved data, and its network connections separately.

What “local” means—and what it does not

In an AI agent, the model is only one part of the system. The model produces responses; the agent runtime supplies tools and integrations that can retrieve information or take actions. A local model means inference happens on local hardware. It does not, by itself, establish that every part of the workflow stays on that machine.

An agent may use a local model for routine prompts but have a hosted model configured as a fallback. It may also connect to services such as messaging platforms or browser tools. OpenClaw’s documentation describes local model servers alongside hosted alternatives and fallbacks, so a local-model label is not enough to determine where every request goes.

Setup Where inference happens Privacy question to check
Local On your own hardware, if the configured model route remains local Can requests be sent to a hosted fallback, and what tools or integrations can still send data elsewhere?
Hosted On a provider’s servers What does the provider receive, retain, or use under its current terms and settings?
Hybrid Locally for some requests and remotely for others Which requests, attachments, or failures trigger a remote route?

These labels describe inference, not a universal privacy guarantee. A product’s routing, integrations, and retention behavior depend on its configuration and policies.

What a local AI agent may access

An agent can access information exposed to it through its runtime and integrations. Depending on the enabled tools and granted permissions, that can include files, shell commands, browser sessions, messaging accounts, or other connected services. A tool’s presence does not prove the agent can access everything on the device: the effective scope depends on the permissions and configuration. But broad grants can expose more than the text you typed into the prompt.

OpenClaw’s security documentation treats tool permissions, access control, prompt injection, browser risks, and secure file operations as distinct concerns. That is a useful way to think about any agent: a local model does not make its tools harmless, and untrusted content can create risks when an agent has permission to act on it.

Limit access to what the task requires

  • Disable tools and connectors you do not need.
  • Grant access to only the relevant folders, accounts, or services where the product allows that scope.
  • Be especially cautious with shell, browser, and messaging tools that can act on information beyond the current prompt.
  • Do not connect sensitive accounts or files until you understand what the agent can read and do with them.

What may be stored on the device

Local operation can leave local artifacts, including configuration, credentials, logs, conversation transcripts, and model files. The specific files, locations, and retention periods vary by product and configuration; there is no single file layout or retention schedule that applies to all local agents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keeping these artifacts on your own machine can reduce reliance on a remote service to store them, but it shifts responsibility to the security of that machine and the agent’s storage settings. Check what the product saves, who can access the host, and whether logs or transcripts can be limited or deleted. OpenClaw’s documentation covers secrets, storage, and logs as separate security topics; consult the relevant product’s documentation for its actual behavior.

What may leave the device

Information can leave through a hosted model route or fallback, an integration, a messaging connection, or a network-accessible agent service. Depending on the workflow, outbound information may include prompts, retrieved content, or generated outputs. A local inference route does not rule out these other connections.

Check the agent’s configured model route, including what happens when the local model is unavailable or a request cannot be handled. Then identify which providers and integrations receive information. Vendor-specific telemetry and retention practices should be verified against each vendor’s current privacy documentation; the details are not established by the fact that an agent runs locally.

Check the network boundary and who can reach the agent

A local service may be reachable only from the machine running it, or it may be exposed to a local network, VPN, reverse proxy, or public interface. Binding address, authentication, and firewall rules affect who can connect; integrations determine which services the agent itself can contact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OpenClaw documents different defaults for different installation types: a regular host installation binds the Gateway to loopback by default, while its container images default to an exposed bind that requires authentication. These are OpenClaw-specific defaults, not a rule for other products, and configuration can change them.

A practical privacy check before connecting private data

  1. Identify the inference route. Confirm whether requests go to a local model, a hosted provider, or a hybrid setup. Inspect fallback behavior as well as the primary model selection.
  2. Inventory enabled tools. List file, shell, browser, messaging, and other connectors, then remove unnecessary tools and narrow their permissions to the task.
  3. Review persistence. Find out whether credentials, prompts, transcripts, logs, and model files are saved, where they are stored, and what controls exist for access and deletion.
  4. Verify network access. Check the service’s bind address, authentication, firewall and remote-access settings, plus the destinations its integrations can contact.
  5. Reassess when the setup changes. Adding a connector, changing a fallback, or exposing a gateway can alter the data flow even if the model itself remains local.

Does local hardware make an agent more private?

Hardware determines whether a model can run locally; it does not decide what the agent can access or send. OpenClaw’s local-model guidance says setup needs depend on factors such as RAM, GPU memory, disk space, context, model weights, and other workloads. It gives a smallest managed llama.cpp recipe with an 8 GiB host-memory floor and a 64K context; those are setup-specific thresholds, not a general performance benchmark or guarantee that a model will fit or run quickly. An external SSD may help store model files when internal disk space is limited, but storage capacity does not prevent data transmission.

OpenClaw also notes that local models do not provide hosted providers’ safety filters. That product documentation is a reason to consider the model’s safeguards alongside its permissions and the task—not to assume that every hosted model has identical protections or every local runtime lacks all safeguards. Restrict capabilities and account for prompt-injection risks even when inference stays local.
