How to Fix Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Problems After Installing Ubuntu

Use a safe diagnostic sequence to find out whether Ubuntu Wi-Fi or Bluetooth trouble comes from a disabled radio, adapter support, missing firmware, or the network or accessory.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Wi-Fi or Bluetooth stopped working after installing Ubuntu, start with the low-risk checks: make sure the radio is enabled, airplane mode is off, and any external adapter is seated. Then identify the exact wireless chipset and Ubuntu release before changing drivers. This order helps distinguish a disabled radio, unsupported hardware, missing firmware, and a connection or pairing problem.

What to check first when Wi-Fi or Bluetooth is not working

  1. Check radio controls. Open Ubuntu’s system settings and confirm Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled and airplane mode is off. Turn on any physical wireless switch or function-key radio control; its location and behavior depend on the computer.
  2. Reseat external hardware. If you use a USB Wi-Fi or Bluetooth adapter, unplug it and reconnect it securely. If possible, try another USB port.
  3. Check the other Bluetooth device. Turn on the phone, headset, keyboard, or mouse, put it in discoverable or pairing mode, and check whether it is already connected elsewhere or set to reject new connections. Ubuntu lists blocked or untrusted devices among possible pairing issues (Ubuntu Help: I cannot connect my Bluetooth device).

For an initial Wi-Fi status check, open Terminal and run nmcli device. A connected Wi-Fi device indicates a connection to the wireless router, not necessarily access to the internet (Ubuntu Help: Troubleshooting wireless connections).

Identify the adapter before looking for a driver

Record the computer’s make and model, the exact Wi-Fi and Bluetooth adapter models, and the Ubuntu release. Adapter-specific details matter: a generic instruction to install a driver for a brand such as Realtek is not enough to establish that it matches your chipset or release.

Check whether Ubuntu detects the adapter and whether a driver is bound to it. Ubuntu’s hardware guidance recommends identifying the device make and model, while its wireless troubleshooting guide describes checking whether the system recognizes the hardware (Ubuntu Community Help: Wireless troubleshooting; Ubuntu Help: Hardware).

  • 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 & 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 - Designed to be nearly invisible, it discreetly stays plugged in to maintain a clean and clutter-free setup.

If no Wi-Fi adapter appears, investigate hardware recognition and the computer’s firmware or BIOS radio settings before installing anything. Not every adapter has a suitable Ubuntu driver, and the remedy depends on the precise adapter model.

Check for a blocked radio

Wi-Fi can be disabled by software or blocked by hardware. In Terminal, run:

rfkill list

Review the output for soft and hard blocks. A soft block may be cleared through software settings; a hard block can require switching on a physical control or changing a firmware setting. The control varies by hardware, so consult the computer’s documentation if the block remains.

Check for missing Bluetooth firmware

Bluetooth adapter detection and Bluetooth firmware are separate issues. Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 documentation says many Bluetooth adapters require proprietary firmware that may not be included in Desktop by default for licensing reasons (Ubuntu Desktop 26.04: Bluetooth).

  • WPA3 Support- Improve your cybersecurity with more secure and individualized protection while being on the internet

To look for firmware-load errors in the kernel messages, run:

journalctl --dmesg | grep -i 'firmware load'

An entry such as Direct firmware load for <path>/<driver-name> failed with error -2 identifies the expected firmware path and driver name. Use the adapter manufacturer’s documentation to find firmware for that exact hardware; do not install files intended for a different chipset.

When Wi-Fi connects but there is no internet

If nmcli device shows Wi-Fi connected but websites and online services do not work, the computer may already be communicating with the router. Check the network password and router configuration, then consider whether the router, internet service provider, DNS, or another upstream setting is at fault. A connected Wi-Fi interface by itself does not prove internet access (Ubuntu Help: Troubleshooting wireless connections; Ubuntu Help: Connect to a wireless network).

When Bluetooth is detected but pairing fails

If Ubuntu can see the adapter, focus on the connection between the computer and the accessory: confirm Bluetooth is enabled on both, make the accessory discoverable, and check that it allows a new connection. A device that is blocked, untrusted, or still connected to another host may not pair as expected. Adapter support and successful pairing are different questions.

When an adapter may be unsupported

Some computers do not include Bluetooth hardware, and some Bluetooth adapters are not supported on Linux. Ubuntu Help cautions that the right drivers may not be available for some adapters (Ubuntu Help: I cannot connect my Bluetooth device). If the installed adapter is unsupported or faulty, a separate adapter may be an option, but verify the exact chipset’s compatibility with your Ubuntu release before buying. The Ubuntu guidance cited here does not validate a particular USB adapter model.

The same caution applies to USB Wi-Fi adapters: confirm Linux driver support for the exact model or chipset. A product name alone may not be enough to identify its wireless hardware.

What to include when asking for help

If the checks do not identify the cause, share enough detail for someone to match advice to your hardware and release:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Ubuntu release and computer make and model.
  • Exact Wi-Fi and Bluetooth adapter manufacturer, model, and revision, if available.
  • Whether Ubuntu detects each adapter and whether a driver is bound.
  • The relevant output from nmcli device or rfkill list.
  • Any Bluetooth firmware-load error from journalctl --dmesg | grep -i 'firmware load'.

Use Ubuntu community support with those details rather than applying a driver recipe written for a different chipset. Wireless instructions can vary by release; in particular, the Bluetooth firmware guidance above is for Ubuntu Desktop 26.04, while some community Wi-Fi material may contain legacy directions.
