Humanoid robots can be autonomous, remotely controlled, or both. Most useful systems use a hybrid arrangement: onboard software handles routine perception, balance and movement, while a human operator supplies goals, corrections or takeover control when the robot meets an unfamiliar object, unsafe situation or task beyond its trained skills.

That means a video labelled “autonomous” does not necessarily show a robot completing every part of a task independently. To judge the claim, ask which actions the robot planned and executed itself, where a remote operator intervened, how repeatable the environment was, and whether a human could assume control.

The three ways a humanoid robot can be controlled

“Autonomous” and “remotely controlled” are not mutually exclusive categories. They describe where control authority resides at a particular moment. A robot may walk to a marked location autonomously, accept a teleoperated command to grasp an unfamiliar item, and then return to an autonomous routine.

Autonomous operation

In autonomous operation, the robot’s onboard sensors and software select actions without continuous human motion commands. Cameras, depth sensors, force sensors and joint encoders provide observations; planning and control software turns those observations into footsteps, arm movements or other actions.

Autonomy is strongest when the task, workspace and objects resemble conditions represented in the robot’s training and testing. Examples include following a mapped route, repeating a practiced pick-and-place sequence, maintaining balance while walking, or performing a scripted gesture. “Autonomous” in this context means that the robot generated and executed the relevant control sequence itself. It does not mean that humans were absent during design, training, supervision or safety monitoring.

Teleoperation

In teleoperation, a remote person supplies motion commands or higher-level task decisions. The interface might map the operator’s hand and body movements to the robot, provide virtual-reality controls, or present camera and force feedback while the operator chooses each action.

Teleoperation is useful when the robot encounters an object it has not seen, a changing layout, a delicate manipulation or a high-consequence decision. The operator contributes human perception and judgment while the robot still performs low-level functions such as motor control, balance stabilization and limit checking.

Hybrid or assistive autonomy

Hybrid control combines both approaches. A person may specify “open that cabinet” or move the robot’s hand near a target, while software plans a collision-free path, maintains balance and limits joint forces. The operator can intervene only when the system detects uncertainty, or can take full manual control during recovery.

IEEE’s 2024 survey describes teleoperation with assistive autonomy as a way to operate robots in challenging environments. Toyota’s 2024 description similarly combines autonomous behavior with remote human intervention so a robot can handle unknown environments and objects that autonomous systems are not yet good at judging. This arrangement is often called human-in-the-loop control.

How the control modes compare

Control mode Who chooses the next action? Where it works best Main limitation
Autonomous Onboard perception, planning and control software Constrained, repeatable or well-trained tasks Performance can degrade on unfamiliar objects, layouts or edge cases
Teleoperated A remote human supplies motion or task commands Unknown, dynamic or high-consequence situations Requires a reliable interface, communications link and operator attention
Hybrid / assistive autonomy Human sets goals or corrects; software executes and stabilizes Mixed environments where routine actions are predictable but exceptions are not Responsibility and intervention boundaries must be clear

Useful comparison criteria are control authority, intervention frequency, task repeatability, environmental uncertainty, communication latency, safety fallback and generalization to new tasks. A robot that needs one correction every few seconds is operating differently from one that runs for an hour and calls a person only when it cannot identify an object.

Why humanoid robots often need a human

Humanoid form factors are intended for spaces built for people, but those spaces are cluttered and variable. A chair may be moved, a box may be partly open, lighting may change, or an object may be slippery, soft or damaged. The robot must coordinate many joints while maintaining balance and applying an appropriate amount of force.

Autonomous software can perform well on a known distribution of situations, yet dexterous manipulation and recovery remain difficult when conditions fall outside that distribution. A person can recognize that a package is wedged, infer that a handle is fragile, or decide to stop when a bystander enters the workspace. Remote intervention adds this cognitive judgment without requiring the robot to solve every rare case itself.

Communication is a constraint. Video, depth and force data must reach the operator, and commands must return to the robot. Delay, packet loss or limited bandwidth can make precise control harder. The IEEE survey identifies robot complexity, unstructured environments and communication limits as central teleoperation challenges. A practical system therefore lets onboard software keep the robot stable and safe even when a person is providing the task-level decisions.

What “autonomous” means in a demonstration

A demonstration can be genuine while still showing only a narrow slice of autonomy. Walking, navigation, grasping, dialogue and recovery may use different controllers. One subsystem can be autonomous while another is teleoperated.

  1. Identify the task boundary. Ask whether the claim covers locomotion, navigation, manipulation, speech, planning, recovery or all of them.
  2. Check who initiated the action. A person may have selected the object, destination or sequence even if the robot executed the motion.
  3. Look for corrections. Cursor movements, joystick input, hand-tracking gestures, spoken commands or a hidden operator console can indicate intervention.
  4. Ask about the environment. A fixed laboratory layout with known objects tests repeatability; it does not establish performance in an unfamiliar workplace.
  5. Check the fallback. Find out whether a person can pause, steer or take over when perception or planning fails.
  6. Separate one successful run from generalization. A rehearsed motion can be autonomous without proving that the robot can invent a reliable strategy for a new task.

The US-China Economic and Security Review Commission wrote in 2024 that advances in AI have increased the degree of autonomy in humanoid robots and enabled more complex interactions. “Degree of autonomy” is deliberately broader than a claim that a robot is fully independent. The meaningful question is which portion of the interaction was autonomous and under what conditions.

How teleoperation works in practice

Operator input

The operator receives the robot’s camera views and other sensor data through a control station. Depending on the system, the operator may use a joystick, motion-capture suit, hand controllers, a keyboard interface or a virtual-reality environment. Some systems map the operator’s arm pose to the robot; others let the operator issue discrete commands such as “reach,” “grasp” or “step left.”

Robot-side assistance

Even under teleoperation, the robot commonly runs local controllers for balance, trajectory smoothing, joint limits, collision avoidance and emergency stopping. This division prevents a small communication delay from immediately causing a fall or an excessive force. It also means that “remotely controlled” does not necessarily mean every motor is driven directly by a human.

Intervention and recovery

A hybrid system can request help when confidence drops, when a planned path is blocked or when a manipulation fails. The operator then supplies a correction, chooses a different strategy or takes direct control. After the unusual situation is resolved, the robot can resume its autonomous policy. The frequency and duration of these interventions are important performance measures, even when a manufacturer does not publish a single autonomy percentage.

Can a humanoid robot learn from a remote operator?

Yes. Teleoperation can be a training step rather than the robot’s permanent control method. During a demonstration, an operator performs the task while the system records images, robot states, actions and sometimes force information. Machine-learning systems can use those demonstrations for imitation learning, policy learning or later evaluation.

The OmniH2O system, reported in the Proceedings of Machine Learning Research in 2025, describes full autonomy learned from teleoperated demonstrations and integration with frontier models such as GPT-4. Its approach illustrates a common progression: a person first shows how to perform a task; the robot then learns a policy that attempts the same task without continuous human commands; a person remains available for failures or unfamiliar cases.

Human-operated data collection is also described in the IROS literature as a way to obtain demonstrations for imitation learning. Demonstrations do not guarantee robust autonomy. The learned policy may reproduce the operator’s behavior only in similar visual and physical conditions, and additional safety checks are needed before deployment around people.

Security and communications are part of the control question

Remote control expands capability but also expands the attack surface. A teleoperated robot depends on authenticated commands, protected video and sensor streams, reliable networking and a safe response to a lost connection. Operators need a clear indication of who currently has control authority.

Fraunhofer reported a Bluetooth vulnerability that allowed complete remote control of the tested software stack on a Unitree G1. That finding concerns the tested configuration and should not be treated as a universal claim about every humanoid robot, but it demonstrates why wireless links, pairing, firmware updates and access controls matter. A robot that can be controlled remotely by an authorized operator must also resist unauthorized control.

  • Use authenticated and encrypted control channels.
  • Separate safety-critical stop functions from ordinary task commands.
  • Define what the robot does when latency rises or the link fails.
  • Log operator identity, commands and transitions between autonomous and manual modes.
  • Restrict wireless pairing and update robot software through a controlled process.

Questions to ask before accepting an autonomy claim

  • What exactly was autonomous? Request a task-by-task breakdown rather than a single label.
  • Was a human watching? Supervision does not invalidate autonomy, but intervention rules should be disclosed.
  • Could the operator intervene? A hidden safety operator changes the risk and capability profile.
  • How often did intervention occur? Report interventions per task, elapsed autonomous time or another clearly defined measure.
  • Were objects and routes known in advance? Controlled demonstrations establish less about general-purpose performance than varied trials.
  • What happens after failure? Look for safe stopping, recovery behavior and a documented takeover procedure.
  • How is communication protected? Wireless access, authentication and fail-safe behavior are part of the system’s real operating capability.

What the current evidence supports

IEEE’s 2024 survey treats teleoperation as important for operating robots in challenging environments. Toyota’s 2024 work explicitly combines autonomy with remote intervention for unknown environments and objects. OmniH2O demonstrates teleoperation and autonomy, including learning from demonstrations, while the 2024 USCC report describes increasing autonomy rather than a complete removal of human involvement.

Together, these sources support a spectrum model, not a market-wide autonomy rate. There is no single percentage that accurately describes how autonomous all humanoid robots are. Capabilities vary by robot, software version, task, environment, operator policy and safety requirements.

The practical answer

If you see a humanoid robot walking, sorting or speaking, it may be acting autonomously, following a remote operator, or using assistive autonomy that combines both. The most realistic deployments give software responsibility for repeatable low-level behavior and give humans authority over goals, exceptions and recovery.

To determine whether a particular demonstration is autonomous, identify the exact task segment, ask whether a person supplied commands or corrections, and examine the environment and fallback procedure. Teleoperation is not evidence that the robot has no autonomy; autonomy is not evidence that no human is involved. For humanoid robots today, the decisive fact is where control authority sits at each step.
