The connection is that Hisense acquired a 95% stake in Toshiba Visual Solutions, the Toshiba business responsible for televisions and other visual products, in 2018. Toshiba continued licensing its name for that business’s products, which helps explain why Toshiba-branded TVs remained on sale after the transfer.
What Hisense acquired from Toshiba
The deal covered Toshiba Visual Solutions Corporation (TVS), not Toshiba Corporation as a whole. Toshiba announced the agreement on November 14, 2017, saying it would transfer 95% of TVS to Hisense Electric Co., Ltd. and that TVS would leave the Toshiba Group after completion. Toshiba’s 2017 announcement also said Toshiba would continue brand licensing for TVS visual products, including home-use televisions made and sold by TVS.

Toshiba confirmed the transfer was complete on February 28, 2018. In its completion announcement, it described TVS’s visual-products business as becoming part of Hisense Group. This was a transfer of a specific subsidiary and its business, not a sale of Toshiba Corporation or all Toshiba businesses.
Why Toshiba TVs continued after the deal
The name on the television and the ownership of the business behind it are separate matters. Toshiba’s continued brand licensing allowed TVS to make and sell visual products, including home-use TVs, using Toshiba branding. In 2021, Toshiba Visual Solutions Corporation changed its name to TVS REGZA Corporation. Toshiba’s 2024 annual report corporate history and audiovisual information page reflect the distinction between Toshiba Corporation and the visual-products business now routed through TVS REGZA.

Does Hisense make every Toshiba TV?
The deal does not establish who manufactures every Toshiba-branded television sold worldwide today. It establishes that Hisense acquired control of TVS, and that Toshiba licensed its brand for products made and sold by TVS. It does not prove that every Toshiba TV in every market is made by Hisense, uses Hisense hardware or software, or is equivalent to a particular Hisense model. Those details need to be checked for the exact model and country.
Toshiba’s television support page directs owners according to model and date, including a separate destination for 2021-or-later models. For support or documentation, start with the set’s model number and country rather than assuming that the Toshiba name identifies one manufacturer or support channel everywhere.
