Choose a desktop search utility by deciding first whether you want a toolbar that stays visible at the edge of the screen or a search palette that appears when you press a shortcut. For a persistent dock on Windows, Microsoft PowerToys Command Palette documents the closest fit. For a keyboard-first launcher, PowerToys Run and Raycast offer different search and customization workflows; neither should be assumed to provide that same persistent dock.
Start with the workflow: a persistent dock or a pop-up launcher?
A dock keeps pinned commands or utilities available on screen. A launcher is summoned when needed, usually with a keyboard shortcut. These solve related but different problems: a dock favors visibility and one-click access, while a pop-up palette keeps the desktop clear until you call it.

- Choose a persistent dock if you want to see frequently used commands or utility bands and click them directly. Microsoft PowerToys Command Palette documents an edge-positioned Dock that can be pinned or set to auto-hide. Microsoft’s Command Palette Dock documentation describes its layout and behavior.
- Choose a keyboard palette if you want to search and act without keeping a bar on screen. PowerToys Run is opened with a configurable shortcut; Raycast documents a keyboard-first search and action workflow. Neither source establishes a Raycast persistent edge dock.
PowerToys is documented here as a Windows utility. Raycast’s manual describes platform-specific behavior for macOS and Windows, so check the current feature notes for your operating system rather than assuming every action works identically on both.

Match search coverage to what you need to find
“Search” can mean finding an installed app, locating a file, switching to an open window, running a command, or opening a link. Check the actual result types you use every day rather than choosing by the word “launcher.” Command Palette covers a broad set of Windows tools and commands; PowerToys Run combines app and file search with calculations, processes, system commands, and plugins. Raycast’s documented Root Search includes apps, files, folders, windows, links, and commands.

For file search, ask where the utility gets its results. PowerToys Run’s Windows Search plugin searches locations indexed by the Windows Search Index service. If a drive or folder is not included in Windows Search’s indexed locations, the plugin may not find its files. Check indexing coverage before concluding that the launcher itself is broken.
Check shortcuts, customization, and extensions
A launcher becomes easier to use when its activation key does not conflict with shortcuts you already rely on. PowerToys Run lets you change its activation shortcut from the default Alt+Space. It also lets you enable and configure plugins and adjust result-selection and appearance preferences. Raycast documents app aliases and per-app hotkeys, as well as configurable app search scopes. Command Palette supports extensions and lets users pin commands to its Dock.

Consider whether you need to add capabilities beyond the built-in search. PowerToys Run uses plugins, while Command Palette has an extension gallery; Raycast documents community-built extensions. Availability and behavior can change by release, so consult each product’s current documentation before relying on a particular extension.
Consider monitors and screen space
If you use more than one display, placement affects whether a launcher feels immediate or gets in the way. PowerToys Run lets you choose a preferred monitor. Command Palette’s Dock supports separate instances and bands on each display, with the Dock positioned on the left, top, right, or bottom edge. Microsoft says the pinned Dock reserves screen space through the Windows AppBar API; auto-hide is an option if you want the Dock out of view until needed. Raycast’s cited manuals document search and application settings but do not establish equivalent persistent multi-display Dock behavior.

Choose by scenario, not by a universal winner
- You want commands visible at the screen edge: Start with PowerToys Command Palette on Windows and decide whether pinned or auto-hidden behavior suits your workspace.
- You want a fast Windows search box with plugins: Consider PowerToys Run, especially if a transient shortcut-driven interface is preferable to a permanent bar. Confirm that Windows Search indexes the places where you store files.
- You want aliases, app-specific hotkeys, and broad search results: Evaluate Raycast’s documented workflow for your operating system and verify platform-specific actions in its manual.
- You are choosing for macOS or Linux: The cited PowerToys documentation is Windows-specific, and this comparison does not establish a complete survey of launchers for either platform. Verify current OS support directly rather than extrapolating from Windows features.
Before settling on one
- Decide whether the interface must stay visible. If yes, verify that the utility documents a persistent Dock, not merely a hotkey palette.
- List the things you need to search. Include apps, files, folders, open windows, commands, settings, and links as relevant.
- Check file-search dependencies. For PowerToys Run’s Windows Search plugin, confirm the relevant drive and folders are indexed.
- Test the activation and display setup. Set a shortcut that fits your habits, then check monitor placement and whether a Dock’s reserved screen space is acceptable.
